PlayStation 5: Sony Partners With Travis Scott To Promote The Next-Gen Console

Sony has partnered with one of the world’s most famous rappers to promote the launch of the PlayStation 5. On social media, Sony announced that it’s working with Travis Scott, who will become a “strategic creative partner” for PlayStation going forward.

Scott himself created the video for the announcement, which features a number of other key members of the team that developed the PS5 hardware.

“We heard Travis is a huge PlayStation fan, so we started a conversation with him that led to this unique partnership,” Sony said in a blog post. “Through our mutual passion for gaming and creativity, we plan on collaborating with Travis and his Cactus Jack brand to produce innovative projects that we hope will delight our collective fans.”

Sony said it will share more about its partnership with Scott “soon.”

This is Scott’s second major branded partnership in 2020, as he also partnered with Warner Bros. to create a new song for Christopher Nolan’s movie Tenet.

With the launch of the PS5 coming up very soon, you can likely expect the Travis Scott promos to roll out anytime now, in addition to other marketing campaigns from Sony. The PS5 begins its global rollout on November 12, and you can see all the launch titles here.

GameSpot has now secured our very own PS5, and we’ll have lots more coverage of the next-gen console very soon.

Sasha Banks Wins Big At Hell In A Cell, Hopefully WWE Keeps Her Winning

At WWE’s Hell in a Cell PPV, Sasha Banks won the Smackdown Women’s Championship for the first time. With five prior Raw Women’s Championship title reigns, that now makes Banks a six-time world champion. But despite letting her run with the belt so many times, WWE has an equal tendency to snatch it back just as quickly. Let’s hope that WWE finally gives Banks a title reign that benefits her performance.

It doesn’t always sit right when professional wrestlers brag about their number of title reigns. In 1996, the Intercontinental Champion was Razor Ramon, and the announcers would gush over him during the broadcasts: “The Bad Guy is the first four-time Intercontinental Champion!” It sounded impressive on its face. But think about it for a second. For someone to be the reigning 4-time champion, didn’t they need to lose the title three times? This type of boast didn’t hold up to scrutiny, especially if the reigns all happen in a short time frame.

What these abbreviated runs communicate to a smart audience is that the wrestler is objectively talented or charismatic enough to be a top star. But for some reason, the company cannot fully commit to or trust the individual. It could be that the wrestler has personal issues or x factors that compromise reliability. It could be an established reputation as “difficult to work with.”

Whatever the case, Banks’ record cannot be chalked up to impersonal policy–that WWE simply moves the belt around a lot to give everyone a chance. Time and again, she has been underutilized, always in service of furthering other women’s careers. Banks’ first Raw Women’s title reign was 26 days. Her second was 27 days. Her third was 19 days. Her fourth was 8 days. And her fifth reign was 26 days. Put another way, her average title reign is 21.4 days long. She has never held the title for more than a month, and she has never successfully defended her title in a televised match.

Compare this record to the other three Horsewomen who are considered her contemporaries: Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Bayley. Lynch held the Smackdown Women’s title for 398 days, only dropping it when she became pregnant. Charlotte Flair held the world title 10 times, and although she had some short title reigns, she also had two reigns that were each over 100 days; both reigns were longer in duration than the combined days of Banks’ reigns. Bayley, who just lost the Smackdown Women’s title to Banks, held it for 380 days.

What could be the cause of this? The gossip in 2016 was that Vince McMahon considered her “injury-prone,” and there were additional rumors in 2018 which pointed to a bad attitude backstage. Neither concern, however, has come up as of late, and her alliance and subsequent feud with Bayley has been a highlight over the past tumultuous year; their recent segment, where Bayley turned on Banks after losing the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, did better–as far as the number of viewers goes–than any other feud in months.

Banks currently has a dearth of worthy challengers, which may lengthen her current run. Aside from Bayley, the Smackdown women’s roster features Natalya, Carmella, Bianca Belair, Zelina Vega, and Tamina. It’s a combination of seasoned veterans who don’t need a title reign and younger wrestlers who aren’t ready for the top spot.

That leaves Bayley as Sasha’s biggest threat. Will WWE give Banks her first successful main roster title defense? Whenever the rematch happens, it’ll show how much the company values Banks and to what extent they trust her. And if Banks wins the rematch, WWE needs to let her have a real run–one that lasts over three months–to finally show what she’s capable of.

Marvel’s Shang-Chi Film Has Finished Filming

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, one of the upcoming films in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has finished shooting. Director Destin Daniel Cretton and lead actor Simu Liu have both confirmed the end of filming on their Instagram accounts (embedded below), as reported by Deadline.

In any year, finishing a film shoot is worth celebrating, but in 2020, wrapping on shooting is an even bigger achievement that usual. The film, which had to shut down its set in early March after the COVID-19 outbreak, was able to resume filming in Australia at the end of July, and has now been completed.

“We made a baby!!!,” Liu wrote in his Instagram post about filming being completed. “We can’t wait to introduce him to the world in 9 months…” The photo shows him and Cretton celebrating. The top comment on the post is also from Cretton: “Hahaha. You killed it!!”

Cretton’s own post is even more succinct: “WE. ARE. WRAPPED!” He followed it up with another picture of himself with actor Awkwafina (The Farewell), who also features in the movie.

Shang-Chi will be the first Marvel movie where the main character is Asian, and it’s clear that Phase 4 is a concentrated effort to get away from making so many films by white men and about white men, after the success of Black Panther and Captain Marvel.

Shang-Chi is set to release on July 9, 2021. Black Widow (May 7, 2021) will release first, and both films will be followed by The Eternals (November 5, 2021).

The Suicide Squad Movie Is Probably Going To Kill Off A Lot Of Its Cast

The Suicide Squad is releasing in 2021, and a new Empire cover story has shown off the movie’s full Squad cast all together. This has started a new wave of discussion about the upcoming sequel/reboot, and director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) has jumped into the fray to talk about his approach–and the fact that a lot of the characters on this cover won’t make it through the movie.

Responding to a tweet asserting that Harley Quinn has “franchise armor” in the film (meaning that DC would not let Gunn kill her because they have long-term plans for the character), Gunn said that’s not the case. “They gave me carte blanche to do what I wanted,” he said, assuring fans that he can kill anyone he wants to.

The “canon” on The Suicide Squad is a bit murky, regarding where it fits in relation to DC’s numerous other movies, so whether or not deaths in the film will have a long-term impact on future DC films remains to be seen. But, for this film at least, it sounds like a lot of characters are going to die.

Gunn fanned the flames more with a follow-up tweet, asking “what two characters” fans think will survive The Suicide Squad. That doesn’t mean he’s directly saying that only two major characters will make it through, but he’s certainly implying the possibility.

Adding up responses, one Twitter user found that Harley Quinn (113 votes), King Shark (58 votes) and Polka Dot Man (31 votes) led the way in votes. Sorry, Weasel.

Gunn also had some interesting things to say about a major death from Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but since that’s a spoiler for another movie, you’ll have to click through this link to see it.

The next DC film will be Wonder Woman 1984, which is currently scheduled to hit cinemas on December 25.

Halo Movie: Guillermo Del Toro Apparently Wanted Master Chief To Have An Evil Twin Brother

Efforts have been underway for a very long time to make a Halo movie, with the likes of Neill Blomkamp, Peter Jackson, and Guillermo del Toro all attached to the project during various stages of production on a film that would never come out. Some new details about del Toro’s version has now come to light, and it sounds pretty wild.

Paul Russell, who came up Halo’s title and was an artist at Bungie for years, shared a new detail from del Toro’s movie script with IGN. He said del Toro had an idea to give Master Chief a twin brother who was evil.

“Master Chief had a twin brother, and the twin brother sided with The Flood, and then the end of the movie was going to be brother against brother,” Russell said.

Russell said he heard this from veteran Halo writer Joseph Staten. “Del Toro was pitching this to Joe at his house,” Russell said. “He was punching Joe on the arm and going, ‘And they’re brothers! And they’re going to fight at the end!'”

Del Toro was working on this Halo movie script with D.B. Weiss, who went on to head up HBO’s Game of Thrones. Del Toro ultimately stopped working on Halo to produce Hellboy 2 instead.

Giving Master Chief an evil twin brother is a pretty extreme idea, and it surely would have elicited some strong reactions from Halo fans. Microsoft is known to be protective of the Halo canon.

Blomkamp, who was also attached to direct a Halo movie at one point in time, said one of the issues he had was that he wasn’t given creative control.

“If I was given control, I would really like to do that film,” Blomkamp said. “But that’s the problem. When something pre-exists, there’s this idea of my own interpretation versus 150 other people involved with the film’s interpretation of the same intellectual property.”

Blomkamp and Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson were prepared to begin shooting the Halo movie, and when it fell apart, they made District 9 instead–it was a big hit.

Gears 5 Will Add New Game+ And An Identity Swap For Marcus

Gears 5 is getting a next-gen upgrade, and it’ll launch alongside a big new update, bringing new content to the game on all systems (including Xbox One). It’ll feature a New Game+ mode, and–strangely–the option to switch Marcus Fenix with actor Dave Bautista for the entire campaign.

IGN reports that on November 10, this update will not only unlock the next-gen version for current owners and Game Pass subscribers, but it’ll also add these new features.

New Game+ will introduce the following changes:

  • New difficulty levels (Ironman and Inconceivable)
  • New character skins and weapon skins (you can use any you’ve unlocked in multiplayer)
  • Mutators (such as big head mode)
  • New achievements

Furthermore, all of your Jack upgrades will carry across, so you won’t be starting back at square one. Ironman will be a classic “permadeath” mode, where you only get one life, whereas Inconceivable is just a bit harder than what’s available now.

The most curious change is the ability to swap Marcus Fenix for Batista, Dave Bautista’s character in the WWE, complete with newly-recorded voice lines. While it will likely sap away some of the resonance of Marcus’ place in the franchise, the game’s principal lead producer, Zoe Curnoe, says that this is the result of a “fan campaign on Twitter.” Clearly this is something people wanted.

Changes to multiplayer and visual upgrades will also be coming to the game on this date–you can see all the details in IGN’s preview.

The Xbox Series X and S launch November 10. Another new Gears game will be coming to consoles for the first time on this date–Gears Tactics, previously released for PC.

James Bond: No Time To Die Won’t Go Streaming, As $600 Million Deal Can’t Find Buyer

The newest James Bond film, No Time To Die, has been finished and ready to go for months now, but MGM has delayed it numerous times due to COVID-19. A report from Bloomberg stated that MGM pitched the streaming rights to Netflix, Apple, and Amazon, but so far, no deal has been reached, and it sounds like that may never happen.

Separately, Variety reported that MGM offered a one-year license for No Time To Die for $600 million. Additionally, MGM is said to have considered releasing the movie on its own through a paid video-on-demand option, similar to how Disney handled Mulan.

However, Deadline reported that neither Netflix, Apple, nor Amazon came back to the table with even half of the reported $600 million one-year license fee. Additionally, the site reported that 007 series producer Barbara Broccoli “flatly nixed the deal.”

The reason? Money, it seems. Deadline reports that No Time To Die could generate $1 billion or more if it’s released in a “healthy” theatre market. While some cinemas have reopened around the world, many remain closed, and even in markets where they are open, people may not want to visit a theatre anytime soon.

All of this leads to a tricky situation for MGM regarding when to release No Time To Die. The site also reminds us that the 007 franchise typically skews older in terms of its target demographic, and people in that age group may be less inclined to visit a theatre during a health crisis.

The studio has delayed the movie multiple times already, and its new release date is April 2021. Go to Deadline to read the full report. According to Variety, MGM has already lost as much as $50 million due to the delays for No Time To Die.
