HBO Max Orders JJ Abrams Series Based On Shining Characters And Justice League Dark Show

HBO Max is pushing forward with new original content as we get closer to the May launch date. Recently, it was revealed that JJ Abrams and Katie McGrath’s Bad Robot Productions is working with Warner Bros. Television Group to put out three one-hour dramas for the service: Duster, Overlook, and Justice League Dark.

Abrams and LaToya Morgan (Shameless, Walking Dead) will be writing Duster, which follows a getaway driver in a crime syndicate in the Southwest during the 1970s. The driver’s life goes from bad to awful over the course of the show.

Overlook leans into horror, as it follows characters from Stephen King’s The Shining. The show will be set in the Overlook hotel and explores untold stories that happened there. Previously, Bad Robot worked on the Hulu series Castle Rock, so you have a good idea of what to expect from Overlook.

Finally, there is Justice League Dark. At this time, there is no further information. JLD has been in production–in one way or another–for years. It was once a movie that fell apart after losing director Guillermo del Toro then director Doug Liman. Back in January, it was revealed Bad Robot was working on both a movie and TV series. It is unknown if the movie is still in pre-production. As far as DC Comics TV shows go, there are also Green Lantern and Strange Adventures series coming to HBO Max as well.

“What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie,” said Kevin Reilly, chief content cfficer of HBO Max and TNT, TBS, and truTV President. “What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic I.P. from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max.”

HBO Max will launch next month and cost $15 a month. It will have 10,000 hours of content and will be a curated library, including the entire collection of current HBO content. In 2020, 31 originals will be available–with 50 being available, in total, in 2021.

Fortnite XP Coin Locations (Week 9 Midas’ Mission Guide)

Week 9’s challenges are now live in Fortnite. This week introduces the first set of Midas’ Mission challenges, some of which fittingly revolve around gold. One asks you to search Midas’ golden llama, while another asks you to find five XP Coins. This is easier than it may initially sound, but if you need help completing this challenge, here’s what to do.

Where Are The XP Coin Locations?

XP Coins are large tokens that you can find all across the island. These have been around since the start of Season 2, but more have been gradually appearing as the season has progressed, so there are now a ton of them scattered around. Unfortunately, any XP Coins that you’ve previously collected won’t count toward this challenge, but it still shouldn’t be too hard to find five.

You can tell when one of the tokens is around by the distinctive noise it makes when you’re nearby. The coins also come in four different varieties–orange, purple, blue, and green–which dole out different amounts of XP and have different conditions depending on their color; the blue coins, for instance, are only around for a short time, so you need to collect those before they disappear.

As previously mentioned, there are a lot of coins around the island, so you’ll likely come across a few of them just by playing normally. If you want to finish the challenge quickly, though, you can head to Slurpy Swamp; there’s a purple coin by the Slurp factory and four green coins in the swamp around it, making that a good place to look.

How To Complete The Challenge

You only need to find five XP Coins to complete this challenge, and it doesn’t matter what color the XP Coins are; any five will do. With that in mind, it would probably be best to stick to green and blue coins, as those are the easiest to find and collect. Purple ones, while they give out much more XP, also burst into several different pieces when you touch them, and you need to collect each of those in order for that one coin to be counted.

Once you’ve found a coin, simply interact with it to collect it. Do that five times and the challenge will be complete.

Season 2 of Fortnite Chapter 2 was slated to end this month, on April 30, but Epic recently announced it was extending the season into early June, giving you a bit more time to complete any weekly challenges that you may have missed. If you need some help clearing those, you can find all of our maps and guides in our Fortnite Season 2 challenges roundup.

Westworld Season 3: Why You Should Actually Watch Devs Instead

Let’s clear the air for a second: Season 3 of HBO’s Westworld is actually pretty fun. Last Sunday, Episode 5, “Genre,” treated us to what could rightfully be considered shark-jumping. Aaron Paul’s Caleb was dosed with a drug that made his perception of reality shift between different movie genres, complete with bombastic soundtrack changes. There was a brief Trainspotting nod. For a moment, he thought he and Dolores were in a melodramatic romance. It was all very silly, but ultimately a good time.

The problem, if it can be called a problem, is that Westworld is now a very, very different show than it was back in Season 1, when it was laser-focused on the deadly serious, gut-wrenching plight of hosts suffering at the hands of their human creators and tormenters. Westworld was a show about free will and humanity, one that used drama, humor, and violence to raise complex questions and suggest intelligent, nuanced answers. Now, it’s a show where Flight of the Valkyrie plays Apocalypse Now-style as Aaron Paul blows up futuristic cars with a rocket launcher.

So, regardless of how fun Westworld might be this year, there’s a good chance there’s still a Westworld-shaped hole in your heart right now. Thankfully, we’ve found something to fill it. Enter FX (on Hulu)’s Devs.

At first glance, these two shows don’t seem to have much in common. Westworld is a prestige drama about a robot uprising, Devs is a miniseries about a Google-like tech company–not the kind building robots for an amusement park, the kind that makes cell phones and search algorithms. But it’s far from being apples-to-oranges. Beneath all the flash and artifice, removed from all the big set pieces and complicated, nesting-doll plotlines, both Devs and Westworld are asking the same core question: What does it actually mean to be human? It’s a sci-fi standby that has been fueling the genre for decades, but as real technology rapidly catches up to the realm of fantasy, the stories we tell about it have been forced to change and adapt in kind.

Westworld’s answer for this has become relatively simple: Freedom of choice is what makes a person a person. Seasons 1 and 2 followed Dolores on her meandering path through self-actualization and eventual deviation from her “narrative loop” within the park. Now, in Season 3, she’s escaped into the “real world,” but rapidly learned that freedom doesn’t exist for humans either–there’s a giant supercomputer named Rehoboam writing the destiny of every person on Earth. This puts her in the unique position of being one of the only genuinely “unscripted” people on the planet, an “anomaly” within the system; a total 180 from her old status quo.

That’s where Westworld’s major themes starts to falter. Season 3 is less interested in peeling back the layers of Dolores’s identity and her relationship to humanity, and more excited to continue ratcheting the dial up to 11 with shootouts, explosions, and spy games. It’s about uprising and war, us vs. them, the hosts against the humans; black hats against white hats and all the chaos that entails. Free will is real, it’s all just a matter of tearing down the systems impeding it with all the brute force Dolores can muster.

Devs takes an equal but opposite approach, opting to lean into the complexity of the questions posed and stalwartly refusing to file down any of their sharper edges in the service of flashy action. Devs answers the question of “what makes a person” with more questions: What if free will doesn’t exist at all and there is literally no such thing as an unscripted life? How do you define humanity once you realize every choice you’ve ever made was, in fact, predetermined?”

Sure, there are no robots, no one’s wearing a cowboy hat or brandishing a six-shooter, and there aren’t any nameless men-in-black hopscotching around a non-linear timeline for you to theorize about week-to-week–but that’s alright. What Devs brings to the table is worth more thought and introspection. And if the complicated questions of early Westworld are what hooked you, Devs can and will deliver on them in spades, with an easy-to-binge 8 episode run and the aesthetic sensibilities with which creator Alex Garland has made a name for himself in films like Ex Machina and Annihilation.

It might make your brain hurt a little (or more than a little), but it’s worth it, especially if the trickier, more cerebral parts of Westworld’s early days were the things that kept you invested in the world of robots and cowboys. Besides, Westworld Season 3 will be there waiting when you’re done questioning the nature of your own existence and whether or not you’ve ever actually made a real choice.

Devs is available in its entirety streaming on Hulu now.

New Division 2 Update Will Let You Improve Your Low Level Exotics

The upcoming Title Update 9 for The Division 2 will implement a new reconfigure feature into the Exotics system. When the update goes live on April 21, you’ll be able to raise low level Exotics to your current level as well as adjust Exotics at your current level.

Under this new system, you’ll be able to reconfigure Exotics up to the level of your crafting bench, capping at level 40. When reconfigured, an Exotic will get new attributes and corresponding stats to match its new power level. If an Exotic is already at your current level, it won’t grow stronger–it will only gain new attributes. This means that choosing to reconfigure your already powerful Exotic could be a double-edged sword, possibly removing beneficial aspects of the equipment.

In order to reconfigure an Exotic, you’ll need its specific Reconfigure Blueprint, all of which require one Exotic Component alongside generic crafting materials. If you’re short on Exotic Components, you can still deconstruct an Exotic you don’t want in order to gain the crafting part. However, after Title Update 9 goes live, you’ll only get one Exotic Component per deconstruction, not two. So you may want to start deconstructing your unwanted Exotics now.

“As soon as you own a specific Exotic, you can purchase the Reconfigure Blueprint from the crafting Vendor, Inaya,” Ubisoft wrote in a blog post. “Existing upgrade blueprints you already owned prior to [Title Update 9] will be converted into Reconfigure Blueprints automatically and will be available in the Reconfigure section of your crafting bench.”

The Division 2 is available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Free-To-Play Dead By Daylight Mobile Game Out Now

A mobile version of Dead by Daylight, the asymmetrical survival horror game, is now live worldwide on Android and iOS, developer Behaviour Interactive announced. Check out the launch trailer below.

The game, which soft-launched to a limited userbase in 2019, has been optimized for mobile devices with scaled-back graphics and touch-sensitive controls. Aside from fitting into a much smaller device, Dead By Daylight Mobile is the same 4v1 survival horror experience. And it features the same content as its PC and console counterparts, including iconic killers like Halloween’s Michael Myers, Stranger Things’ Demogorgon, and more. Dead By Daylight Mobile is free to download for everyone.

In other Dead By Daylight news, the game’s newest DLC is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The Chains of Hate expansion includes a new Killer, another Survivor, and a wild west-themed map and costs $8. It’s unclear if this DLC pack will make its way to Dead By Daylight Mobile.

We scored the game a 6/10 in our original Dead By Daylight review, saying, “Dead by Daylight executes the concept of a competitive horror game well, but only to a point. The poor matchmaking and the highly exploitable scoring system make Dead by Daylight less competitive than it should be, resulting in gameplay which doesn’t resemble the horror experience it sets out to be.”

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Madam M Decision Guide: Which Course Should You Choose?

Note: This post contains light spoilers for Chapter 9 of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. We recommend you’re at least playing through this chapter before reading this guide.

During the Wall Market section of Chapter 9, Cloud and Aerith embark on a mission to find Tifa, who’s holed up in the mansion of the reclusive Don Corneo. To accomplish this task, Aerith must qualify as an official candidate in the running to be one of Corneo’s many mistresses. If you’re coming up on this after reading the guide we wrote about Chocobo Sam, then you’ll know you need the approval of Corneo’s closest confidants–another of which is a woman goes by the name of Madam M.

When you speak to Madam M–like Chocobo Sam–she also presents you with a choice. For her, it’s around the massage course you want to spend money on. There are three choices: the Luxury Course (3,000 gil). the Standard Course (1,000 gil), and the Poor Man’s Course (100 gil).

The decision you make ultimately impacts a pair of side-quests you get access to later on after you complete the coliseum. If you choose Standard Course or Poor Man’s Course, you’ll be locked into a set of side-quests tied to Chocobo Sam, but if you choose the Luxury Course, you’ll be locked into side-quests tied to Madam M.

If you’re eager to experience the other pair of missions, you’ll need to replay Chapter 9 using the Chapter Select menu that becomes available once you finish the game. Doing both sets is required to complete the “Best in the Business” Trophy.

Below you can find a walkthrough detailing each pair of side-quests and some of the rewards you can earn along the way. For more guides, be sure to check out our FF7 Remake walkthrough and guides roundup. Otherwise, read our FF7 Remake review for our full thoughts about the game.

Chocobo Sam’s Side-Quests (Standard Course or Poor Man’s Course)

The Party Never Stops

Just north of the gym on the same side of the street is the clothing shop. Talk to the owner, who will dispatch you to go find his father at the bar across from the gym. You mostly just need to follow Johnny around Wall Market, talking to people. Your performance will be based on the quality of your materia: Assess, elemental materias like Fire and Ice, and Cleanse. If you’ve leveled them up, you’ll earn Moogle Medals at each step.

The Materia Shop owner will send you to the Inn to use a vending machine, where your Assess materia will be tested. After that, drop by the restaurant and help the owner with whatever your best elemental materia is. Finally, the Item Shop owner will send you to deliver medicine; depending on the level of your Cleanse materia, you’ll deliver more medicine for more rewards. Check the bathroom at Drunkard’s for your first delivery to get a sedative. The second goes to the alley behind the gym, accessible from the northwest side of the map, and gives you a celeris. The third is for the narrow alley just north and east of the Item Shop, which will earn you a pack of three Big Bombers. After you’re done with the medicine, the Item Shop owner will give you the “Inspiration” to bring back to the dressmaker and complete the quest.

Dynamite Bodies

After speaking with Sam, go to the Colosseum for more fights. If you can, combine a Fire and Elemental materia on your armor to give yourself additional protection. You’ll fight two Bomb enemies, which don’t have any major weaknesses, but are strong against Fire attacks. How you fight these guys is the key, though–you’ll want to catch them with attacks while they’re in the middle of doing attacks of their own, like the Flamethrower or Fireball, to raise their stagger meters. The best way to do this is to stay out of range, flinging Blizzara spells at the Bombs when they blow fire your way.

Avoid hitting the Bombs when they do the Inflame move, because that’ll cause them to grow in size, making their attacks more potent and expanding their range. Do your best to keep away from the Bombs and keep pushing their stagger meters up until you can close the gap and take one out with Punisher attacks and ATB abilities. At that point, finishing off the other should be pretty simple. You’ll get an Arcane Scepter weapon for Aerith for your trouble.

The Price of Thievery

Head just outside of Wall Market and talk to Mirielle. Return to Evergreen Park and enter the Collapsed Highway again, where you’ll find Beck’s Badasses. This time, they’ve got a big Grungy Bandit backing them up, who will like to charge at you and pick you up. He’s slow and weak to fire, however, so just avoid him and hit him with magic attacks or Punisher strikes until you put him down.

Shears’ Counterattack

Once you finish both side-quests “The Price of Thievery” and “Burning Thighs,” head to Madam M’s to get a new challenge in the Colosseum. You’ll face the Jury-Rigged Cutter in the battle. It’s a powerful but slow opponent, and at this point, you’ll have fought through a bunch of Sweepers and Cutters–deal with this one the same way, with Lightning magic and Punisher melee strikes. Keep clear of its attacks by dodging and you shouldn’t have much issue.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Coin Toss Guide: Which Choice Should You Pick?

Note: This post contains light spoilers for Chapter 9 of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. We recommend you’re at least playing through this chapter before reading this guide.

When you arrive to the Wall Market in Chapter 9, the party is quickly set on a mission to find Tifa by entering the mansion of the reclusive Don Corneo. To accomplish this, Aerith needs to qualify as a candidate in the running to be one of Corneo’s many mistresses, so they can easily bypass his heavy security detail. But this isn’t a simple process, as you need to the approval of Corneo’s closest confidants–one of which is a feller named Chocobo Sam.

Once you start chatting with Chocobo Sam just outside the entrance of the Wall Market, he soon presents you with a coin toss to determine whether or not he’ll help Aerith out. You’re given three choices: Heads, Tails, or No Deal.

No Caption Provided

While you might spend the next 10 minutes mulling over what to do, don’t waste your time. No matter which choice you make, the outcome will always be the same where you’ll guess it wrong. This even applies when you say “No Deal”, since Aerith will inevitably decide for you, leading to the same result.

Chocobo Sam is really just messing with you, which lends to the charm of his character–aside from his pitch-perfect Sam Elliot impersonation, of course. You do get a slight hint about him rigging the coin toss beforehand if you talk to the disheartened Johnny, who passes by and rants on about how he should’ve picked heads.

Ultimately, this may not be the answer you want to hear about the coin toss choice, but at least, you can breathe easy knowing that your journey isn’t impacted by the decision. However, do keep in mind that the choice you’re faced with Madam M later on does impact how some things play out during Chapter 9. For a full rundown on everything you need to know about that choice, read our Madam M decision guide.

For our other guides, be sure to check out our FF7 Remake walkthrough and guides roundup. Otherwise, read our FF7 Remake review for our full thoughts about the game.
