There’s a total of 80 fish to catch in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, from huge ocean-dwelling sharks to tiny tadpoles in your island’s ponds. One of the rarest (and most profitable) of these fish is the coelacanth, an ancient fish once thought to be extinct in real life that is actually still alive and swimming. Luckily, you don’t have to do anything extra-special to catch one; you just need to keep an eye on the weather.

When To Catch A Coelacanth

Unlike a lot of fish, the coelacanth is available year-round and at all times of the day. However, it only appears when it’s raining. Weather in New Horizons isn’t tied to real-life weather, so you just have to look out for a random rainy day as you play–it can even start or stop raining throughout an individual day.

In previous Animal Crossing games, you could also catch a coelacanth when it was snowing. However, New Horizons’ in-game Critterpedia only lists rain as a weather requirement, not snow. We will update this guide when we can confirm this.

Where To Catch A Coelacanth

Coelacanth only appear in the ocean, and they’re represented by the largest shadow. When it’s raining, just go to the ocean and keep an eye out for big fish. While you might still get the dreaded sea bass, with a little patience, you should get a coelacanth.

You can also go to a deserted island on a Mystery Tour to catch a coelacanth. Because the weather on these islands can be different from the weather on your own island, it doesn’t hurt to check if you’re eager to complete your museum or make a quick buck. That said, there’s no time limit to catching a coelacanth like with the game’s seasonal fish, so it’s probably more convenient to wait for rain on your own island.

What To Do With A Coelacanth

Like with other fish and bugs, you have two main options once you’ve caught a coelacanth: You can donate it to Blathers at the museum or you can sell it for bells. We recommend donating your first catch so you don’t forget, then selling any others to Timmy and Tommy at Nook’s Cranny or to the special visitor C.J. for 150% of the regular price.

You can also display a coelacanth in a large tank in your home or around the island.

By the way, coelacanth is pronounced “see-la-canth.” Yes, I only know this because of Animal Crossing.

While conventional wisdom would say punishingly frustrating games aren’t the best experiences to recommend right now, I think they can provide a welcome distraction. Enter: Dark Souls. This weekend you can save on the iconic From Software franchise on Steam until April 20, with incredible discounts on Dark Souls 3 and Dark Souls 2.

Baba is You developer Arvi Teikari is hard at work on his next game, Environmental Station Alpha 2 (tentative title). But Teikari acknowledges that the sequel to Environmental Station Alpha, a 2015 metroidvania, isn’t likely to achieve the same levels of success as Baba is You–a sentiment he’s willing to accept.

“I’ve been trying to tell myself and remind myself that it’s extremely unlikely that whatever I do next, or whatever I do ever in my career, will be as successful as Baba Is You,” Teikari said in an interview with GamesIndustry.Biz. “Unless I figure out something as novel as Baba Is You, my future games will have to be okay not being as successful. And I would really like to be fine with that.”

“ESA 2 is a very traditional metroidvania game, not one that would get people saying ‘Wow this is so innovative!'” Teikari added. “More like, ‘Oh, this is another game in the genre that already has a lot of games, not very interesting but I might enjoy playing it.’ He hopes that he can be happy with the critical reception to ESA 2, which he predicts will be less favorable than Baba is You seeing as ESA 2 isn’t currently as innovative.

Prior to completing ESA 2, Teikari plans on releasing a level editor for Baba Is You. He has no specific release date in mind, though he’s aiming to finish in 2020.

In the interview, Teikari admits experiencing a sense of burnout following the completion of Baba is You, a game he developed entirely on his own. It’s an experience shared by several other indie developers who designed games on their own–developing a game solo can be mentally and emotionally taxing.

A cult-classic game from the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube era is soon coming to modern consoles–yes, we’re obviously talking about SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, a remake of the 2003 3D platformer based on the popular cartoon. THQ Nordic finally revealed a release date for the game, which is set to launch June 23 on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, so it won’t be long before fans can return to the oceanic town of Bikini Bottom, reimagined with vibrant visuals.

First revealed ahead of E3 2019, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated follows SpongeBob and his friends Patrick and Sandy as they work to save Bikini Bottom from the evil Plankton and his horde of robots. SpongeBob and team must make their way through various platforming levels, avoiding hazards, collecting items, and battling wacky robots. While the original game was single-player only, the remake adds a new horde multiplayer mode (online and split-screen); it also includes original content that was cut from the original, like the Robo Squidward boss fight.

The original game received mixed reviews and currently holds an overall score of 71 on Metacritic (with an 8.3 user score), but it’s since developed a cult following, and it’s a favorite within the speedrunning community.

THQ Nordic has announced that SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is launching on June 23 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game was initially announced in the days leading up to E3 2019.

Rehydrated is a remake of the original Battle for Bikini Bottom that released on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube in 2003 (the PC and GBA games were distinctly different.) While the game didn’t review particularly well, it soon became a cult classic and is popular among speedrunning communities.

The remake features “high-end visuals” and “modern resolutions.” There’s also a brand-new Horde mode for up to two players, both online and offline, and some of the original game’s cut content has been restored, such as the Robo Squidward boss fight and more.

Pre-orders are now available for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Two special editions of the game have been announced as well. The Shiny Edition includes an 8-inch SpongeBob figurine with a golden spatula and flexible tongue, wall stickers, six lithographs, SpongeBob SquarePants tennis socks, and, of course, the game itself.

The F.U.N. Edition, meanwhile, includes the same 8-inch SpongeBob figurine with golden spatula and flexible tongue, a 7-inch figurine of Patrick, a Sandy 8-inch figurine, wall stickers, a set of Tiki keyrings, six lithographs, SpongeBob SquarePants tennis socks, and the game. The world of fighting games is replete with crossovers of all kinds, and Jump Force is one of the largest in recent years. Now, Bandai Namco’s manga-inspired brawler is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2020.

Named after Shonen Jump magazine, one of the oldest institutions in the world of manga, the game offers Super Smash Bros.-like brawling with a large roster of over 50 characters. While there isn’t a firm release date for the Switch version yet, it will feature an exclusive offline 3 vs. 3 mode, which allows six people to fight simultaneously in a tag-style match.

Bandai Namco also announced the game’s second Character Pass for all platforms, including PS4, Xbox One, and PC. This will feature characters from YuYu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Bleach. There’s no word on a release date for that either.

In our review of Jump Force, critic Jordan Ramée felt that the game offered accessible fun, though he found the game’s story lacking. “Jump Force is a worthy celebration of the legacy of Shonen Jump manga, but it honors its source material a little too well with how filler-heavy the middle of its story arc is. However, even if the game rarely provides a clear motivation for stopping evil other than good must always oppose it, the act of stomping out villains in Jump Force’s frantic bouts of tag-team arena combat is an enjoyable test of strategy.”

Known for its critically acclaimed survival horror game Until Dawn, Supermassive Games kicked off its next project, The Dark Pictures Anthology, in 2019 with Man of Medan, which told the frightening story of a group of college students who find themselves aboard a ghost ship. Now, the next entry in the horror franchise is nearly here. A recent trailer revealed the anthology’s next installment, Little Hope, will release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC sometime this summer, nearly one year after Man of Medan. And if you already know it’s a day one purchase for you, Amazon is starting to open up pre-orders for The Dark Pictures: Little Hope.

As with Until Dawn and the first Dark Pictures game, Little Hope will involve playing as several different characters from a third-person perspective and making decisions as the story progresses that will affect various outcomes. The decisions you make for each character affects how their personality evolves over the course of the game, and those decisions also affect their relationships with each other. As a result, there are multiple endings and different ways that things can play out in Little Hope, and as always, the stakes are high–no one is guaranteed to survive if you don’t think carefully about your next move.

Story-wise, Little Hope follows a new group of college students along with their teacher, who find themselves stranded in a quaint, isolated town shrouded in fog after their bus crashes in a storm. You soon discover the town has a dark and bloody past–in the 17th century, the town was “gripped by witchcraft,” and nobody was safe from the accusations that would cause your death. The trailer shows flashbacks to 1692, when these Salem-inspired events took place, and it seems as though your actions in the past will affect how the future plays out, although it’s unclear exactly how much agency you’ll have in these scenes.

“All that suffering, all that malice leaves a profound effect. It creates repercussions. And there are always repercussions,” teases the mysterious Curator in the trailer, the omnipresent narrator from Man of Medan who returns to guide you and speak to you directly as the player in Little Hope.

While similar to Until Dawn in many ways, The Dark Pictures Anthology innovates on the genre with its multiplayer gameplay, which is set up perfectly for a spook-filled game night. In the couch co-op Movie Night mode, each player will pick a character (or two, depending on your group size) to play as, and every time that character has a playable scene, you’ll pass the controller around. You can also play online with a friend in the two-player Shared Story mode. While each player will experience the story together, at certain points the story will branch off, giving each player a unique perspective of the events. The new multiplayer elements in The Dark Pictures Anthology were inspired by the immense popularity of Until Dawn streaming and the fact that many people would gather to play through the game together.
