Batman Writer Reveals Reason for Early Comic Series Exit

Batman writer Tom King has shed more light on the reasons for his early departure from the series. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly (via CBR), King revealed that his commitments to writing Ava DuVernay’s New Gods movie and an unannounced TV project made it difficult to remain on board the twice-monthly Batman series.

News of King’s early departure first broke last month, raising concerns that his planned 100-issue run would be cut short. DC later eased concerns by announcing Batman/Catwoman, a 12-issue limited series debuting in 2020 that will allow King and artist Clay Mann to finish that story as intended.

Men In Black International Review: That Old Ragnarok Magic Is Dead And Buried

When Men in Black first arrived in theaters in 1997, it was something new and exciting. A sci-fi comedy about chasing aliens was an imaginative idea, and the casting of Will Smith as a rookie secret government operative, with Tommy Lee Jones as his veteran mentor, worked on practically every level. While the sequels that followed never quite reached the heights of the original, they brought new ideas to the table, whether it was Men in Black II turning the tables and making Smith’s Agent J the veteran, or how Men in Black III introduced time travel to the mix. Regardless of how they ranked in terms of quality, the Men in Black films were always at least trying. That is, until Men in Black: International.

The latest entry into the franchise, which swaps out the former leads with a Thor: Ragnarok reunion between Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, is not imaginative, exciting, or all that fun. Instead, what audiences are left with is a predictable, cliched, and plodding affair that somehow loses the charm of both the franchise and the chemistry we all know exists between Hemsworth and Thompson.

Men in Black: International follows a new generation of MiB agents, with Thompson stepping in as a rookie that figured out the MiB exists after seeing them in action as a child. Hemsworth, on the other hand, is a hotshot agent in the UK branch who loves to party and takes her under his wing. But instead of building a working relationship between the two, the movie is more interested in having them fight a pair of smoke monsters repeatedly, with a variety of silver laser blasters. None of which seem to do the trick. This is, honestly, the best way to sum up the movie as a whole. It relies on being flashy and cool-looking, without bothering to invest in stories or characters to make audiences care. What’s worse, the flashiness is more of the same we’ve already seen from the other Men in Black movies.

As for the plot, H (Hemsworth) and M (Thompson) get their hands on an especially dastardly alien weapon that they have to keep out of the hands of other aliens that might use it for evil purposes. It’s a simple enough story with a twist that is telegraphed very obviously in the opening minutes of the film. That’s followed by nearly two hours of weak jokes about how the agency should not be called Men in Black when women are in positions of power and how ridiculous that steering wheels are on the right side of cars in the United Kingdom–real cutting edge humor, as you can tell.

The one saving grace of the entire film is Kumail Nanjiani, who voices a tiny alien named Pawny that takes a liking to Agent M. The lines he delivers are funny enough to make you want more of him in the movie. Likewise, Rafe Spall’s Agent C, whose entire motivation is hating H because he gets special treatment, has some small fun moments in the film that made me want to spend more time with his character.

Wasted are Liam Neeson and Emma Thompson, who should honestly team up for their own MiB movie, because who wouldn’t want to watch that? Instead, they’re the overlords of their particular MiB offices and don’t get to do much at all.

When they announced Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson were making a Men in Black movie together, the world rejoiced. After seeing how wonderfully they worked together on-screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this one seemed like a slam dunk–especially when you throw director F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) into the mix. Yet what we’re left with is a movie that’s just mediocre and unimaginative. Everyone involved deserved better, and so does the audience.

It makes you wonder how good that proposed Men in Black/21 Jump Street crossover movie could have been. Because chances are it would’ve been better than this.

E3: Elon Musk And Bethesda’s Todd Howard Have A Weird Chat, Announce Fallout Shelter For Tesla

Tesla is getting another video game. In an E3 Coliseum panel at E3 2019, Todd Howard announced that the management sim Fallout Shelter will be coming to Tesla autos. No release date was mentioned in the announcement.

The word came from a panel with Bethesda’s Todd Howard and Tesla’s Elon Musk. The conversation was wide-ranging and often esoteric or even odd, but Howard slipped a comment about their partnership in the midst of it.

“We are actually working together,” Howard said. “We are working on Fallout Shelter for Tesla. So you’ll have your little dwellers on the screen and they live in the car.”

Responding to a call-out from a member of the audience suggesting Skyrim on Tesla, Howard joked, “We’re going to start a little smaller.”

Similarly, StudioMDHR recently announced that Cuphead would be appearing in Tesla autos.

PSN Is Down, Causing PS4 Server Issues And Errors For Games During E3

E3 2019 is winding down, with Thursday marking its final day. Even without Sony at the show, there has been a lot of games for PS4 fans to check out. But those at home looking to boot up their PS4 (or other PlayStation Network-reliant device or service) might find themselves running into server issues. Sony has confirmed PSN is down, with many users reporting the error code WS-37403-7.

Sony shared the news in a tweet on its PlayStation Support account, writing, “We’re aware that some users are experiencing issues logging into PSN.” The PSN status page further reaffirms this, listing all areas of PSN as impacted. That includes account management, gaming and social, PlayStation Now, the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Vue, and more. No further tweets have been shared, but the most recent update on the PSN status page came at 2:26 PM PT and reiterates that Sony’s “engineers are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”

With these widespread issues, you may not be able to sign in on your PS4, which could mean you’re locked out of not just online play, but also some of your games. There’s no word on how long this may last or when servers will come back online.

When things do come back up, Sony’s E3 sale is ongoing and offers some very nice deals on PS4 games and hardware.

E3 2019: GTA 5’s Grand Theft Auto Online Adding A Luxury Casino

Grand Theft Auto Online, the online mode for GTA 5, has turned into a sprawling mix of activities–some more legal than others–and Rockstar has announced one more vice that you can live out in the game soon: casino gambling.

A tweet from Rockstar teased “a luxury casino in the heart of Vinewood.” It also showed some stylized neon lights to evoke the casino look, but was otherwise short on details.

GTA Online updates come frequently and when something is announced it tends to follow in the game shortly after. Rockstar has not announced release plans for its casino or how exactly it will operate.

The online mode is technically a part of Grand Theft Auto 5, the latest in the action crime series from Rockstar. It has grown far beyond its original incarnations, though, and is largely responsible for GTA5 continuing to sell incredibly well even six years after launch.

Recently Rockstar was on a confirmed list of developers for Google Stadia, but it was one of only a handful of studios named without specific games attached. GTA 5 with GTA Online would be one possibility, since it already has a successful PC version up and running.
