The Superhero Games We Want And Who We’d Love To Make Them

With the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac Games has proven that it was the right studio for the job. And you can tell as you play it: Insomniac displays an intimate understanding of the character through the story, as well as the combat and web-slinging mechanics. It’s not often that a studio gets a superhero game right, but when it does, it’s fantasy wish-fulfilment of the highest order.

But all of this joy for Spider-Man has us eager for the next big game that’ll do justice to another iconic comic book superhero. Marvel Games has acknowledged several times in the past that it’s always looking for new studios to partner with to adapt its properties into games, and with the success of Spider-Man, it’s probably looking to do more. And we’re sure the owners of other big superhero properties are likely doing the same.

Naturally, this has us thinking about all the superhero games that we want and the studios we’d love to make them. After all, there are hundreds of comic book characters out there who deserve games, but have yet to get one that does them justice.

We’ve compiled our ideas, and we’ll admit that the folks in our office have a bit of a bias towards Marvel, but you’ll find a few surprise concepts based on obscure superheroes as you click ahead.

In the meantime, which game studio would you put in charge of your favorite superhero? Let us know in the comments below!

George R.R. Martin on Winds of Winter: ‘I Wish I’d Been Done 4 Years Ago’

Game of Thrones’ author George R.R. Martin wishes he had been done with the upcoming novel Winds of Winter years ago.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, in which Martin was asked about the status of his upcoming book, Martin said, “I’m working on

, and I wish I’d been done four years ago, but I’m slow and the book is very complex.”

The author has apparently also stopped making visits to the set of the HBO series because, although “going to set is a lot of fun,” Martin says, “there’s nothing for me to do there, so I thought I better stay home.” He continued, “I still have two books to write.”

Fortnite’s Cube Just Melted And Everyone On Twitter Is Freaking Out

The mysterious purple cube in Fortnite has finally stopped moving. It ended up falling into Loot Lake and melting. No one really knows why or what any of it means.

It’s anyone’s guess as to what’s actually happening in Fortnite right now. Weeks ago, a giant purple rift in the sky started shooting out lightning and destroying cacti. The final strike left behind a massive purple cube in the middle of the desert. Covered in strange glowing symbols, the cube reacted differently depending on how players interacted with it.

A few weeks after that, the cube suddenly began moving on its own and rolling across the map. It finally ended up splashing into Loot Lake, where it promptly melted and filled the once pristine water with a mysterious purple goo. As you might imagine, this chain of events has both excited and perplexed Fortnite’s players, who’ve taken to Twitter to discuss the latest developments.

Michael Anderson (@nminus1) immediately wanted to know what the new name for the lake should be. Loot Lake just doesn’t seem to do the body of water justice anymore.

We’re thinking Purple Pool or Leaping Lagoon. Why Leaping Lagoon? Because–as Martita (@MartitaaCano) discovered–the cube has made the entire body of water into a giant trampoline.

Jumping on the pool of water is more than just fun. @Bigus_Daddius discovered that bouncing on the lake while in the shopping cart can net you some seriously large rewards.

Whatever happens next, it seems like the cube is on its last legs before disappearing for good. Goodbye Fortnite cube. We’ll miss you.

If you want to see the new lake yourself, just jump into a round of battle royale in Fortnite. The game is available on Xbox One, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.

Fortnite’s Cube Just Sank Into Loot Lake. Now What?

The saga of the mysterious cube in Fortnite: Battle Royale continues. After destroying a newer building in Tilted Towers, the cube–as fans predicted–has made its way to Loot Lake.

As shown in the video below from YouTube user Laytxn, the slow march of the cube saw its next roll send it into the lake. It begins to emanate a sort of purple shroud into the nearby water, and after a brief moment where it seems as if it may float, it instead slowly sinks (or melts). As this happens, Loot Lake begins to turn purple, and it now has the same bounce properties the cube itself did. The slow descent of the cube–perhaps the last time we’ll see it–is capped off with some ominous music but no Terminator-style thumbs up, which just seems rude after all the time we’ve spent following it.

So what’s next? Players have theorized where things might be headed, and it seems clear that the cube is somehow tied to the incoming Season 6. As of yet, though, it’s unclear what will definitely happen. This pre-Season 6 rollout has been slower than that of Seasons 4 and 5, where it was clear that the comet would crash and anachronistic objects and areas would come through the rift, respectively.

We’ll of course continue to monitor what’s next and report back with any further developments. It seems as if Epic plans to continue evolving the island map, rather than introducing a new one, but it’s always possible it will throw a curveball and surprise everyone.

Season 5 officially ends on September 25. If Epic holds to the same release pattern as it has in the past, Season 6’s start date could come immediately after that.

Fortnite’s Cube Enters Loot Lake!

As many fans expected, Fortnite‘s mysterious cube has entered Loot Lake. You can watch what happens above, but the cube either melts or sinks into the water, turning the entire lake purple. Just as notably, it also gave the water the same properties the cube had, bouncing players into the air. All of this appears to be a setup for Season 6, which may start as soon as next week. Epic has not yet announced a start date, but Season 5 ends on September 25, which may be when we see the next big evolution of the game. For now, enjoy having a giant, bouncy lake to check out.

Pokemon Go Adding A New Mythical Pokemon, But It Will Be Hard To Get

Pokemon Go players will soon have their first chance to add another rare Pokemon to their collection, but this one may be harder to catch than most. The Mythical Deoxys from Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire versions is set to debut in the popular mobile game, but just as Mewtwo before it, it will only be available through EX Raids.

Unlike standard Raid Battles, EX Raids are an exclusive type of battle that you can only participate in if you received an invitation. In order to qualify for an invite, you will need to have recently won a Raid Battle at a “qualifying” Gym. If you do manage to get your hands on one, you’ll now be able to extend the invitation to one of your Ultra or Best Friends.

No Caption Provided

Pokemon Go developer Niantic says Deoxys will begin appearing in the game “with the next cycle of EX Raid invitations.” Gyms that can host EX Raids will now be marked with a new tag when you look at its details, allowing you to more easily identify which locations you’ll be able to find Deoxys.

Deoxys is a powerful Psychic-type Pokemon, so if you do get an invite to an EX Raid, you’ll want to bring strong Dark-types such as Tyranitar to combat it. In the mainline series, Deoxys is able to assume multiple forms, each of which alters its appearance and amplifies certain stats, but it will appear in its Normal form when it debuts in Pokemon Go. It’s unclear how Niantic will introduce Deoxys’ other forms in the mobile game.

The Gen 1 Legendary Mewtwo was originally also only available through EX Raids, but it will make its first appearance in standard Raid Battles beginning later this week, September 20, as part of the Ultra Bonus Event. You’ll be able to encounter the Legendary Psychic-type at Gyms until October 23, so you won’t want to miss your chance to add it to your collection while you can.

The Fortnite Cube Is Dead, And Loot Lake Has Turned Purple (And Bouncy)

Where past seasons of Fortnite have had the comet and rifts to keep an eye on, the lead up to Season 6 has been headlined by the cube. The giant, mysterious purple object appeared after a lightning strike partway through Season 5, and eventually it began moving around the map at fixed intervals. As predicted, it’s ultimately made its way to Loot Lake and sank or melted into the water.

The long-term effects of this and what it portends for Season 6 are unclear, but it does have one immediate, very noticeable effect. The water in Loot Lake has turned distinctly purple, a change that’s easily noticeable even from the Battle Bus. Should you make your way to the water, you’ll also notice one other big adjustment: The water now bounces players up into the air, much as the cube itself did when it was intact.

We don’t yet know how long the lake will remain this way–you can see what it looks like above–but it’s just the latest evolution of the Battle Royale map, which has changed significantly with each of the past few seasons. Epic has yet to release a second map for its wildly popular mode, but it hasn’t been shy in making major adjustments to the island, wiping out sections of it with meteor crashes and replacing others with new area teleported from different dimensions.

With so much change, expectations are high for Season 6. Epic has yet to announce a start date for it, but new seasons typically follow immediately after the conclusion of the previous one. If so, you can expect to see Season 6 next week, as Season 5 is set to wrap up on September 25. That makes this your last chance to complete any challenges and earn the rewards available right now.

Destiny 2: Forsaken’s Gambit Mode Free Trial This Weekend

Destiny 2‘s Forsaken expansion has been out for a few weeks and the Raid is live, but that doesn’t mean Bungie is done trying to entice people to play the game. This weekend, between September 21-23, anyone with Destiny 2 (which is free this month for PlayStation Plus members) has a chance to try out Gambit mode for free.

In Gambit, two teams of four face off against separate waves of enemies. Fallen enemies drop “motes,” which you can collect and deposit into a bank in the center of the map. Once a team has deposited 75 motes, a “primeval” boss appears. The first team to kill its boss wins the round.

That would make for an enjoyable PvE race, but a few additional rules apply, ratcheting up the excitement of each Gambit match. Banking a group of motes all at once temporarily removes your opposing team’s mote bank, while a mini-boss appears in its place. Also, at various points during the match, a portal will open up, letting one player travel to the opponents’ side, where they can attack and kill players, causing additional setbacks.

The free trial includes all four Gambit maps. It’s an exciting mode, and one anybody who’s interested in Destiny 2 should give a shot. The trial begins at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) September 21 and ends at the same time on September 23. For tips to help you win, be sure to check out our Gambit guide and, for the love of all that’s good, use Sleeper Simulant if you have it.

This week also represents the first instance of Iron Banner in Year 2 of Destiny 2. For more information, check out this week’s Ascendant Challenge location and guide as well as Spider’s latest bounty.
