Breaking Down The Predator’s Box Office Debut Compared to Whole Franchise
20th Century Fox’s The Predator had no trouble taking the top spot at the box office with an estimated $24 million, easily taking down last weekend’s winner The Nun, which dropped a whopping 66.2% to second place with $18.2 million. It also handily beat fellow newcomers A Simple Favor (3rd place, $16 million), White Boy Rick (4th place, $8.8 million) and Unbroken: Path to Redemption (9th place, $2.3 million), but it still represented a step back, so to speak, in the franchise as a whole. So we’re breaking down The Predator’s debut, when compared to the five other films in the Predator franchise, both in unadjusted grosses and grosses while adjusting for inflation.
Given the fact that this franchise has been around for over 30 years, it’s important that we adjust for inflation because it provides added context. When you look at just the raw numbers, The Predator is in the middle of the pack with the third highest debut of the six films. The Predator is just behind 2004’s Alien vs. Predator ($38.3 million) and 2010’s Predators ($24.8 million), but it’s possible that when the actual numbers come in, it could be adjusted up and overtake Predators in the second spot. It comes ahead of the original 1987 classic Predator ($12 million), 2007’s Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem ($10.1 million) and 1990’s Predator 2 ($8.8 million)
Game of Thrones Wins Best Drama Series at 2018 Emmy Awards
Game of Thrones has won the award for Outstanding Drama Series at the 2018 Emmy Awards.
Accepting the award were showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, producer Bernie Caulfield, author George R.R. Martin as well as an array of the show’s cast, including Peter Dinklage, Gwendoline Christie, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Isaac Hempstead-Wright and more.
“Writing for these actors behind me has been the greatest honor … We didn’t invent these characters, the show could not be without the mad genius of George, thank you for trusting us with your characters,” said Benioff during his acceptance speech.
“A show is only as good as the people who make it, and we’re blessed and lucky to have the greatest cast, the greatest crew, the greatest producers,” continued Weiss. “It is an honor to work with them from Spain to Iceland all the way to our home base of Belfast, Northern Ireland.”
First Captain Marvel Trailer Coming Soon, Here’s When
The first full trailer for Captain Marvel will be released on Tuesday, September 18. Star Brie Larson will appear on the morning show GMA to present the trailer, apparently. GMA airs on ABC, whose parent company is Disney, so it all checks out.
Larson will presumably be on hand to give an interview about Captain Marvel, so check back soon with GameSpot to see the trailer and get all the other new details.
In addition to Larson in the title role, Captain Marvel–which is set in the 1990s–stars a two-eyed, digitally de-aged Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as a Kree commander, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, and Gemma Chan as Minn-Rrva. You can see a full breakdown of who’s in the movie here.
Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, 2019. It will be followed sometime in April with the release of Avengers 4.

The Americans’ Matthew Rhys Wins First Emmy Award
As The Americans celebrates its final season at the Emmys, leading actor Matthew Rhys earned his first ever Emmy Award.
Rhys took home the award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series. He took to the stage and thanked The Americans’ showrunners, creative team and cast, as well as FX CEO John Landgraf and Amblin Television. But most significantly, he thanked his on-screen and real-life partner Keri Russell.
“To the woman who truly got me this award and who stands in front of my every day and puts up with me — she said if you propose to me I will punch you clean in the mouth. I don’t have the words, I don’t have the time, neither of which would do you justice Keri, but thank you, more to come,” said Rhys to close out his acceptance speech.
Better Call Saul: “Something Stupid” Review
Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow…
“I don’t need to be a lawyer, I’m a magic man.”
“Something Stupid” (a nice bookend title to “Something Beautiful”) was a huge transitional episode that not only sped us through months – during a split screen intro that may require a second viewing to catch all the little fun morsels – but it also worked to create more distance between Jimmy and Kim in their relationship. We know these two weren’t destined to be together, but the question the show has to answer is “How does everything fall apart?”
Well, there was no big blow up or massive turning point, they just sort of let time and lack of true honest communication erode away at the already fragile bond between them. Kim’s choice to join Schweikart and Cokely left Jimmy without a clear and organized vision board, and a muddled goal. The cell phone hustle is still a means to an end, with Jimmy becoming a big time lawyer sitting in an office designed to impress and overwhelm, but is he doing it now to woo Kim back into the fold or does he want to sort of rub it in her face and show her that he can thrive right under everyone’s noses again? Like he did back when he worked in the mail room.
Teddy Perkins Showed up to the Emmys and We’re Confused
At the 2018 Emmys, there was a surprise cameo in the form of one Teddy Perkins, from Season 2 of FX’s Atlanta.
Darius (Lakeith Stanfield), meets the eccentric recluse while looking to purchase a classic piano. Perkins’ strange appearance and mannerisms had many fans wondering who was underneath all of that makeup. Shortly after the episode aired, we learned that it was none other than series creator Donald Glover.
While we won’t spoil all of the crazy scenarios that Darius and Teddy get into in that particular episode, it appears that the strange character made his way to TV’s most prestigious night. Once again, social media is wondering who might be playing Teddy this time around. Is Donald reprising his role or is it someone new?
Thandie Newton Wins First Emmy for Westworld
Thandie Newton won her first Emmy Award for her scene-stealing role as Maeve Millay in Westworld at the 2018 Emmy Awards ceremony.
“I don’t even believe in God but I’m gonna thank her tonight,” Newton said during her acceptance speech. “I’m so blessed… to work with the people I’ve gotten to work with: the cast and crew of Westworld, I love you all so much, Lisa Joy, Jonah Nolan, Home Box Office, J.J. Abrams, our guardian angel.”
This is Westworld’s first win of 2018; the show was nominated for 13 awards, including Best Drama. The HBO series scooped four Emmys at the 2017 ceremony in technical categories (Sound Mixing, Makeup, Hairstyling and Visual Effects), but this is the show’s first win in a major category.
