International Game Developers Association Wants New Loot Box Standards
The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) has called for the video game industry to take action on loot boxes before more governments do.
In an IGDA blog post, Executive Director Jen MacLean writes: “Random loot drops are a well-established game mechanic and a way to vary rewards and keep players interested and engaged. But when a player makes a real-money purchase of an unknown item – a loot box – we run the risk of triggering gambling laws.
“Those regulations are not always clear, and many people have noted that loot boxes are simply digital versions of collectible card games, but we cannot ignore the fact that video games face increased scrutiny, concern, and regulation because of their immersive nature.”
Blue Beetle Movie in the Works at DC and Warner Bros.
The first Latino superhero movie about Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle is currently in the works at DC and Warner Bros., according to TheWrap.
Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who is known for Universal’s Scarface, will be writing the script, with Zev Forman on as an executive producer for Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. was rumored to be developing a Booster Gold-Blue Beetle live-action film with Greg Berlanti back in 2015, but that didn’t go anywhere.
Directors of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 to Be Presenters at The Game Awards
Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, will be presenters at The Game Awards next week.
Announced by Geoff Keighley, the Russo brothers being presenters may hint that we are going to see more of Square Enix’s Avengers game in development by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal.
Avengers 4: 6 Things We Do and Don’t Want to See in the Trailer
Sooner or later, the first trailer for The Avengers 4 will hit the Internet. We’re not exactly sure when, and it’s looking more and more likely that the footage won’t debut in November as was previously reported. But regardless of when the trailer hits, MCU fans will finally have a better idea of the plot of this sequel and how it builds on the cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War.
There’s a delicate art to crafting great movie trailers these days. Marvel Studios needs to show fans just enough to whet their appetites without needlessly spoiling the movie (or Captain Marvel, for that matter). With that in mind, here are some things we do and don’t want to see out of the new trailer when it does finally drop.
Avengers 4 Directors Will Be At The Game Awards
While it doesn’t necessarily guarantee any news regarding any of their projects, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 directors the Russo brothers will be in attendance at The Game Awards next week. They’ll be there as presenters, according to a tweet from the show’s creator, Geoff Keighley.
“We are excited to welcome Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Avengers, to the #TheGameAwards next week,” Keighley wrote. “Don’t miss the stream live everywhere around the world on Thursday night. #WorldsWillChange” The latter hashtag is in reference to a tagline used in relation to this year’s awards show, so it doesn’t necessarily pertain directly to the Russos. Perhaps to temper expectations regarding any news, Keighley also shared that another big star–one of the Muppets, Pepé the King Prawn–will also be a presenter.
Even as just presenters, the Russos’ presence will stir speculation about some kind of announcement. An Avengers game known currently as The Avengers Project is in the works, though the Russos are not known to have any involvement with it. Their inclusion could simply be a matter of attracting more mainstream attention to the show.
The Square Enix-published game is in development at Tomb Raider studio Crystal Dynamics, with Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal also working on it. The game was first announced back in early 2017, though we’ve heard little about it since. Crystal Dynamics did announce the opening of a new studio in Washington earlier this year that will be contributing to the game, among other things.
The Russos participated in a public Q&A this week, during which fans had been hoping for the long-awaited first Avengers 4 trailer. That trailer ultimately didn’t surface, though we have previously been told to expect a trailer before the end of the year.
The Game Awards are set to take place on Thursday, December 6, at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET (2 AM GMT / 12 PM AET on Friday). The award nominees have already been announced, and Keighley has teased that 10 games will be announced during the show.
Fantastic Beasts Producer Defends Decision to Extend From 3 to 5 Movies
Fantastic Beasts producer David Heyman recently discussed the decision to extend the series to five movies from an initially planned trilogy.
In an interview with Collider, Heyman responded to a question about the extension, saying “It wasn’t a difficult conversation to have at the studio… it didn’t go from anybody speaking to Jo
and saying, ‘You know what? Let’s milk this.’ Both in fairness to the studio, but also to Jo. While it may look like it to some people, there is nothing cynical about this. This is all from her head.”
“So she begins with three films, because she thinks that’s the story she wants to tell, and then as she digs deeper… and she hadn’t written anything when she said three. Then she wrote the first, and as she was writing the second, actually just before then, but as she says we working on the first, she began to realize there was a whole lot more, and she was trying to figure out, ‘how the hell am I going to squeeze this into three?’”

Elder Scrolls Mobile Game, Blades, Delayed
The Elder Scrolls Blades has been delayed. The first mobile installment in Bethesda’s long-running RPG series was originally slated to hit iOS and Android devices sometime this fall, but according to the series’ official Twitter account, it will now arrive in early 2019.
Bethesda hasn’t shared any further details on the game’s new release window, nor did it provide a reason for the delay. However, the company says that players are still able to pre-register for The Elder Scrolls Blades on its website. Doing this will grant you early access to the game ahead of its launch, although we likewise don’t yet know when this early access period will begin.
First announced during Bethesda’s E3 2018 presentation, The Elder Scrolls Blades is billed as a “pure Elder Scrolls game” with “console-quality graphics.” Unlike recent console installments such as Skyrim, Blades doesn’t feature an open world–although Bethesda says one could be added down the line. The game contains PvP and town-building elements, as well as the same kind of combat as previous Elder Scrolls games.
Blades was also one of the games showcased during Apple’s 2018 keynote address back in September. During the presentation, Bethesda’s Todd Howard took the stage to demonstrate how the game will run on the new iPhone XS. Howard also noted the advantages the XS’s OLED screen and other hardware improvements offer.
Blades will be free to download and play when it launches for iOS and Android. It also isn’t the only Elder Scrolls project Bethesda is currently working on; the company also announced the next proper installment in the series, The Elder Scrolls VI, is in development, although that might not launch until the next generation of consoles.
