Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Makes No Sense (And That’s Okay)

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey transports the franchise to ancient Greece, when the military driven Sparta and democratic Athens are in the midst of war. For the first time in the series, you get to choose whether to play as a man named Alexios or a woman named Kassandra. Regardless of your choice, your protagonist is the disgraced child of a Spartan general who grows up to be a neutral mercenary for hire.

As a mercenary, Kassandra and Alexios should hold no allegiance for any one side in the war, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey allows you to choose who they side with. If you want, you can ally with neither or both sides as well. In terms of gameplay, this allows Kassandra or Alexios to do missions for either army, even if they’ve spent the previous hour helping the other.

This opens the game up to some pretty enjoyable side quests and bounties, but it also clashes with the game’s overall narrative. Even if Kassandra and Alexios aren’t technically Spartan, it seems odd for them to betray their country. And when the game’s story switches gears and presents plenty of evidence as to why Kassandra or Alexios would side with Athens, the game still allows you to kill the Athenian leadership.

In the video above, video producer Jake Dekker discusses how this ludonarrative dissonance–an inconsistency between a game’s narrative told through the gameplay and told through the story–causes Assassin’s Creed Odyssey to make no sense. It’s not the only example either, as Kassandra and Alexios have access to seemingly supernatural abilities, like surviving a drop from any height without a pile of hay, that make no sense in the world of Assassin’s Creed. However, as Jake also notes, this is totally okay. Despite the illogical disconnect between story and gameplay, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is still fun and absolutely worth playing.

In our Assassin’s Creed Odyssey review, editor Alessandro Fillari gave the game an 8/10, writing, “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s ambition is admirable, which is reflected in its rich attention to detail for the era and its approach to handling the multi-faceted narrative with strong protagonists at the lead. While its large-scale campaign–clocking in at over 50 hours–can occasionally be tiresome, and some features don’t quite make the impact they should, Odyssey makes great strides in its massive and dynamic world, and it’s a joy to venture out and leave your mark on its ever-changing setting.”

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey pulls inspiration from a lot of different games–including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Mass Effect: Andromeda–to various levels of success. If you’re still on the fence over whether or not to buy Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, you can get a good understanding of the game by watching GameSpot social media producer Sam Leichtamer, Funhaus writer and producer Alanah Pearce, and Kinda Funny founder Greg Miller play through it together.

The Craziest, Rarest, And Most Expensive Funko Pops At NY Comic Con 2018

Earlier this year, we here at GameSpot Universe discovered all the most shockingly expensive Funko Pops for sale at San Diego Comic-Con 2018. Naturally, now that New York Comic Con has come around once again, we were eager to recreate that journey–and not just for our benefit, as you lucky readers get to come along with us.

This week once again we were reminded that whether we’re talking about Beanie Babies, Pokemon cards, or–of course–Funko Pops, there’s always someone willing to pay more for a “holy grail” than what you might happen to consider reasonable. And once again, the results of our latest Comic-Con Funko Pop hunt were shocking and incredible.

Just how rare is rare when it comes to Funko Pops? As we discovered on this amazing journey, some Pops are rare because they were only ever released at a single event, while others were produced in hyper-limited quantities.

At the end of the day, these Funko Pops are just cheap chunks of colored plastic. Their only actual value is the imaginary worth we assign to them. But as with any popular collectible, that doesn’t stop Pop hunters from dropping hundreds–and even thousands–of dollars on them. And in the end, if they bring someone happiness, isn’t that worth it?

Read on to see discover the craziest, rarest, and most expensive Funko Pops we found at New York Comic Con 2018.

We’re in the third day of New York Comic-Con 2018 and the quality of cosplay continues to be exceptional. The show floor is packed with people representing some of the most beloved TV shows, anime, movies, comic, and video game franchises with eye-catching outfits.

On Day 3, we got to see a fair bit of Dragon Ball Super representation, with adults, teenagers, and even kids unleashing their inner Saiyans. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Comic-Con without a healthy Marvel cosplay presence, and in this gallery you’ll see both heroes (Spidey) and villains (Hobgoblin) making an appearance.

Back on the anime front, everyone’s favourite barely-trying superhero Saitama–better known as the One Punch Man–can be spotted delivering a nice clean right-hand straight to a jaw. And there’s some Naruto thrown in for good measure too. Beyond that, you’ll find awesome costumes for Metroid, Game of Thrones, Batman, Nightmare on Elm Street, and more. If you haven’t already seen them, make sure to check out our gallery of cosplay from NYCC 2018 Day 1 and Day 2, as there plenty of top notch costumes to see in those too.

Day 3 of NYCC 2018 has delivered some big news and previews too. Although it is yet to be released publicly, we got to check out the Hellboy trailer and wrote up our impressions, and if you’re a Star Trek: Discovery fan, make sure to check out the trailer for Season 2, as it’s teasing some exciting things for the upcoming series. The talk of the show, however, is Into the Spider-Verse, and watch us discuss what we learned about it here.

Jean Grey’s Dark Phoenix Origin Revealed At NYCC

During New York Comic-Con, Fox gave fans an early look at the 2019 movie Dark Phoenix, the newest installment of the X-Men franchise. In the 14 minutes of footage shown, the audience got to see the moment that changed Jean Grey from an everyday member of the X-Men to what will eventually become Dark Phoenix.

Warning: There are spoilers for the 2019 film ahead.

During the footage which was shown at a Fox Showcase at an AMC theater, the X-Men are on a mission to go into space in the Blackbird to save some stranded astronauts in a faulty space shuttle. Mystique leads a team consisting of Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Beast, and Quicksilver, and very quickly, the team realizes it is a race against the clock as what looks like either a cosmic cloud or slow-moving solar flare is headed to the shuttle, and it will burn up everyone inside.

The team goes to work, each with their own objective. Cyclops blasts the ship to stop it from spinning, Storm uses her powers to create ice to patch up holes in the ship, and Nightcrawler takes Quicksilver and Jean into the ship, where Jean uses her powers to try and hold it together. Nightcrawler and Quicksilver save everyone but they couldn’t get back to Jean, who is being hit with the space fire.

Meanwhile, another branch of this flare is headed towards the Blackbird, and Jean uses her powers to pull it towards herself. She’s engulfed in this cosmic fire, and it seemingly kills her. After the unidentified cosmic force dissipates, Nightcrawler brings her back to the ship, and eventually, she wakes up, but there is an orange glow in her eyes. Something has changed inside her, but at this time, the viewer isn’t sure just what.

Obviously, it’s going to take a bit more than that for Jean to completely transform into the Dark Phoenix, but this scene was the start of it all. As we gathered from the second trailer, Jean goes on a search to fix whatever has happened to her, after Professor X and Beast can’t figure it out. This will eventually lead her to Genosha, where she finds Magneto. From there, we’re not entirely sure where the film leads, but you can find out for yourself when Dark Phoenix comes to theaters on June 7, 2019.

Make sure to check out our impressions of the footage Fox showed during New York Comic-Con for Dark Phoenix.
