Destiny 2: Forsaken’s Gambit Mode Free Trial This Weekend

Destiny 2‘s Forsaken expansion has been out for a few weeks and the Raid is live, but that doesn’t mean Bungie is done trying to entice people to play the game. This weekend, between September 21-23, anyone with Destiny 2 (which is free this month for PlayStation Plus members) has a chance to try out Gambit mode for free.

In Gambit, two teams of four face off against separate waves of enemies. Fallen enemies drop “motes,” which you can collect and deposit into a bank in the center of the map. Once a team has deposited 75 motes, a “primeval” boss appears. The first team to kill its boss wins the round.

That would make for an enjoyable PvE race, but a few additional rules apply, ratcheting up the excitement of each Gambit match. Banking a group of motes all at once temporarily removes your opposing team’s mote bank, while a mini-boss appears in its place. Also, at various points during the match, a portal will open up, letting one player travel to the opponents’ side, where they can attack and kill players, causing additional setbacks.

The free trial includes all four Gambit maps. It’s an exciting mode, and one anybody who’s interested in Destiny 2 should give a shot. The trial begins at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) September 21 and ends at the same time on September 23. For tips to help you win, be sure to check out our Gambit guide and, for the love of all that’s good, use Sleeper Simulant if you have it.

This week also represents the first instance of Iron Banner in Year 2 of Destiny 2. For more information, check out this week’s Ascendant Challenge location and guide as well as Spider’s latest bounty.

Sony PlayStation Classic Mini Release Date And Pre-Order Guide

Here’s some good news for fans of retro gaming: Sony has announced it will release a miniature original PlayStation console that comes pre-loaded with 20 PS1 titles. Similar to Nintendo’s throwback NES and SNES consoles, it’s significantly smaller than the original (about 45% smaller), but the included replica controllers will be full size. The PlayStation Classic, as it’s called, is set to release on December 3, exactly 24 years after the original system launched in Japan. It will cost $100 / $130 CAN.

Of the 20 games that will be available on the console, Sony has only announced five so far: Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. That’s already a nice selection, representing an array of genres that should appeal to most people with an interest in ’90s gaming. Whether it will include games like Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy Tactics, Resident Evil, or whatever your favorite PS1 title is, we’ll have to wait and see.

The unit will ship with an HDMI cable, USB cable, and two wired controllers. Notably, it does not come with an AC adapter. Also, it ships with replicas of the original PS1 controller, which doesn’t have analog sticks. In 1997, Sony released the DualShock controller for PS1, which many people regard as a significant improvement, thanks to its two analog sticks and vibration function. There’s no word yet on whether Sony will release DualShock controllers for the PlayStation Classic.

Pre-Order PlayStation Classic

It’s unclear how many PlayStation Classic units Sony will make available at launch. But since the NES and SNES Classic consoles were notoriously difficulty to find early on, it’s probably wise to pre-order the PS Classic if you’re interested in picking one up at launch. Here’s where you can place a pre-order.

Both retailers only charge you for the purchase when it ships, and you can cancel your pre-order any time if you change your mind.

The Best PS4 Game Discounts In This Week’s PlayStation Store Sale

A new week means a new PlayStation Store sale, so if you’ve been wanting to save money on digital PS4 games, now’s a good time to buy. This week’s discounts include a selection of games from the Lego series as well as a number of titles published by Warner Bros. Let’s take a look at what’s on sale and see if you find anything that’s worth buying.

Maybe you’ve finished Spider-Man, or perhaps you’re waiting for the price to come down before you play it. In either case, you can pick up games starring one of the other big comic company’s most popular heroes for cheap this week. Batman: Return to Arkham and Batman: Arkham Knight are each just $8 right now. And if you have a PSVR headset, you can embody the Dark Knight yourself to solve crimes in Batman: Arkham VR for $12.

Other highlights include Jurassic World Evolution for $51, Injustice 2 for $22, and Middle-earth: Shadow of War for $25. On the cheaper side of the scale, you can pick up indie games like Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons for $6 and Virginia for $3. PS Plus members can save $3 by pre-ordering Hollow Knight Voidheart Edition before its September 25 release.

Finally, Lego fans have plenty of opportunities to save cash this week. The most recent entry, Lego The Incredibles, is down to $36, but the older games are much cheaper. You can get Lego Jurassic World, Lego Marvel’s Avengers, Lego Marvel Superheroes, and Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens for $8 apiece.

Even if you don’t see anything on here you’re interested in, you can check out the full sale for even more discounted games.

Get Four Free PC Games Right Now

Good news, PC gamers. The online retailer GOG is giving away four games for free right now. It’s unclear when they’ll go back up to regular price, so if you like free stuff and you have a PC capable of rendering the pixels of retro games, you’ll want to pick these up as soon as possible.

The games in question are all from the 1990s. You can grab Tyrian 2000, Shadow Warrior Classic Complete, Stargunner, and Bio Menace without spending a dime. And as with all GOG games, they come DRM-free.

Tyrian 2000 is a fast-moving vertical shooter that has you flying through space and blasting enemy ships with a customizable array of weapons. Shadow Warrior is a first-person shooter from 3D Realms, the makers of Duke Nukem 3D. Stargunner is a side-scrolling space ship shooter, and Bio Menace is an action platformer.

Basically, if you like shooting things in the pre-polygon era, you’re going to have a good time. And even if you don’t care for the games, at least you didn’t spend any money on them.

If you have an Amazon Prime membership, you can also pick up September’s free PC games from Twitch right now. These include The Adventure Pals, Guild of Dungeoneering, Gunpoint, and more. And if you’re an Overwatch player, also be sure to grab your free Golden Loot Box.

Yakuza Spin-Off Project Judge Brings Fresh Detective Action to a Familiar World

After finishing the demo of Project Judge (titled Judge Eyes in Japan) available on the Japanese PlayStation Store, I understood that the development team of the Yakuza series was indeed trying something new. However, it took a while before the demo allowed me to experience that “completely different” experience director Toshihiro Nagoshi had promised.

After an opening story sequence, I was brought to the fictional Tokyo nightlife district of Kamurocho, whose neon-lit streets are well known to fans of the Yakuza series. The camera zooms over the bustling cityscape before settling on our detective hero, Takayuki Yagami, disguised as a homeless person as he prepares for a stakeout. Between the Kamurocho streets and Yagami’s muscular and shady-looking detective buddy, familiarity set in fast.

Sega Mega Drive Mini Delayed into 2019

Sega’s Mega Drive Mini console has been delayed into 2019, according to a tweet by Sega’s Japanese Twitter account. The Mega Drive Mini was originally planned to release in Japan this year.

The good news for classic Sega fans is that the response to the retro console’s announcement earlier this year has been strong enough that Sega is now also bringing versions of it to the United States and Europe. All three regions will get the console, which will be called the Sega Genesis Mini in the U.S., at the same time thanks to a worldwide launch.

Switch Owners Can Now Play Their Games on More Than One Console

Thanks to the release of version 6.0 yesterday, Switch owners now have the ability to play their downloaded games and content on a second console. The functionality works by having users designate “primary” and “non-primary” consoles through their Nintendo Account.

If a Switch owner is without their own console but has access to someone else’s, it’s possible to log into their Nintendo Account on this non-primary console and play all of their digital game content on it. The catch is that users will have to maintain an internet connection while playing their owned content on any non-primary console. If the user loses their internet connection, then the game will pause “after a certain amount of time.” The player can resume where their game was paused once a connection is reestablished.
