First Man Review

This is an advance review out of the Toronto International Film Festival.

First Man works so well is because it chooses to focus on an intimate story about what it takes to achieve greatness. And what better filmmaker to explore that idea than Damien Chazelle, a director who has made a career out of stories about the sacrifices we make for our dreams. Chazelle (La La Land, Whiplash) accomplishes that once again here while also delivering a visually stunning film.

The film starts with an eye-popping opening scene in which astronaut Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling), as a test pilot in 1961, rides an X-15 into the clouds, to the point where mission control tells him he will bounce off the atmosphere. Cinematographer Linus Sandgren, who also shot La La Land, puts us inside the cockpit for a claustrophobic and impossibly shot sequence that is so immersive you may be forgiven for feeling dizzy and disoriented. The sound design and score help, as we feel every loose screw, every turn of the engines, and Justin Hurwitz’s score resembles a ticking clock, guaranteed to increase your heart rate.

The Witcher Games’ Geralt Voice Actor Isn’t Part of Cyberpunk 2077…Yet

Doug Cockle, who voiced Geralt throughout the Witcher trilogy, isn’t currently involved with Cyberpunk 2077.

“I’m not currently attached to any triple-A projects,” Cockle said in a recent interview with VG24/7. Cyberpunk 2077 undoubtedly being a blockbuster game, that statement alone would seem to rule out Cockle’s involvement, but the voice actor left no room for doubt.

“I’m not

actually, so I don’t even have to lie about that,” he said. “Whether I will or not is a different question.

“They’ve kind of hinted that they want to get me involved in some way, shape, or form. But what that might be? Who knows, and it may never happen.”

Other dynamic watch faces that interact with the larger screen and its curved edges.

The Digital Crown now has haptic feedback and the speaker has been redesigned to be 50 percent louder, which is handy for phone calls and talking to Siri. Inside the device is the S4 chip with a dual-core 64-bit processor, which deliverers 2x faster performance. The accelerometer gyroscope has been improved significantly too, to the point where it can tell when a wearer has fallen over. If it senses you’re immobile for more than a minute it starts informing emergency services.

Three new heart features were also announced. The first is a notification when your heart rate is too low. Apple Watch can also screen your heart rhythm in the background and send you information if it detects atrial fibrillation. The final new feature is the ability to take electrocardiograms (ECG); this is the first time an ECG product has been offered over the counter to consumers, according to Apple. Built in electrodes in the back of the watch and the Digital Crown detect electrical signals from the heart and the S4 chip processes this information, before surfacing it to the wearer in the Health app. This information can be exported as a .pdf file and given to doctors. All this data, Apple says, will be protected, as the information is encrypted on the devices and in the cloud.

The Apple Watch Series 4’s battery life has the same 18-hour battery life as its predecessors, even with the enhancements.

Series 4 will be available in silver, gold, and space grey. A stainless collection will also be available, alongside a gold stainless finish. Band colours and styles that are already available will still fit the new watch. Apple Watch Series 4 starts at $399 with GPS, $499 with cellular and will be available to order from September 14 and picked up from September 21. The Series 3 Apple Watch will drop in price to $279. The latest version of WatchOS, meanwhile, will launch on September 17.

Amazing Spider-Man Delivers Hilarious Spectacle

It’s easy to picture Marvel’s latest Amazing Spider-Man relaunch turning out poorly. Writer Dan Slott was a near-impossible act to follow, given the huge mark he left on the franchise. Yet over the course of this opening storyline, Nick Spencer and Ryan Ottley have managed to make the series their own even as they continue very naturally from where Slott left off. The result is a comic that manages to bring Spidey back to basics even as it continues to push him forward and challenge him in unexpected ways.

Issue #5 caps off the series first major story arc, with Peter Parker and Spider-Man still occupying separate bodies and a fleet of Tri-Sentinels putting New York in danger. It’s a great premise that really speaks to the unique blend of high-concept storytelling and goofball humor the creators are going for here. The Tri-Sentinel threat gives this issue ample scope and drama, but Spencer’s script rarely wavers from its focus on the Peter/Spidey dynamic. What happens when the two halves of his life become physically separated? And can Peter impart that lesson about power and responsibility to a Spider-Man who has no memory of Uncle Ben? It’s a fascinating dilemma that proves Spencer has no trouble thinking outside the box.
