Matt Damon Turned Down “A Bunch Of Money” For Bourne Game Because He Didn’t Want It To Be An FPS

Matt Damon has spoken about turning down “a bunch of money” to work on The Bourne Conspiracy video game because he wanted it to be more than a first-person shooter.

Appearing on Hot Ones, Damon was asked to confirm if it’s true that he declined to be in the game because he wanted it to be more like 1993 game Myst. It is true, and that’s why his voice and likeness was not used in the game, which was released in 2008.

“I just didn’t want to do just a first-person shooter,” he said. “They offered me a bunch of money. But I was like, ‘If you could make it more … a little more thought had to go into it. Like Myst.’ I love that game. So I was like, ‘More like Myst.’ They were like, ‘No,’ and just went and made it without me [laughs].”

Damon reportedly told The Boston Globe that he “lobbied hard” to make The Bourne Conspiracy game more like Myst, which is a puzzle game.

The Bourne Conspiracy game was developed by High Moon Studios. Developer Meelad Sadat told MTV News that the company never sat down with Damon, though an offer was extended to him for his involvement. After Damon declined, High Moon “decided to move away from celebrity involvement and take our Bourne into an original direction.”

Jeffrey Pierce voiced Jason Bourne in the game; he went on to voice Tommy in The Last of Us series.

As for the Bourne movie series, the last movie in the series was 2016’s Jason Bourne. Whether not the series continues with a sixth installment remains to be seen.

Damon’s latest movie is Stillwater, in which he plays an oil rig worker who goes to France to help save his daughter (Abigail Breslin). It’s directed by Spotlight’s Tom McCarthy and is in theaters now.

Ryan Reynolds Says There’s a ‘70% Chance’ of Deadpool 3 Starting Production Next Year

Ryan Reynolds says there’s a ‘70% chance’ of Deadpool 3 starting production next year.

Speaking to Collider during a press day for the star’s upcoming film Free Guy, Reynolds spoke about the foul-mouthed superhero’s third outing. Hesitant to put a time frame on a start date for production, he said, “The percentage chance? I don’t know. I couldn’t assign a percentage to that. I’d say it’s 50/50 maybe? We’re really actively developing it and getting it into pretty good shape. What the hell month is it? August? Oh, next year? Probably pretty damn good. I’d say 70%.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Reynolds offered an update on the film’s writing process. “It’s something that is just a daily process. Writing is kind of like that, you’ve gotta allot time to do it and walk away, and I’m working with the Molyneuxs on it, it’s been great. They’re incredibly talented and so, so smart.” Bob’s Burger and Great North writers Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneux were brought on as writers for Deadpool 3 in November.

The actor was full of praise for the Molyneux sisters, who sound like they have taken well to their new project: “They so understand that world and know how to zig when everyone’s expecting a zag, so it’s been a lot of fun.” he said. Deadpool’s unique style was a welcome addition to the superhero genre but it will be interesting to see how the writing team looks to improve this further to keep Deadpool 3 feeling fresh this time round.

The third installment will be particularl interesting given that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige confirmed that Deadpool 3 will become part of the MCU – which could offer unique opportunities for cameo characters within the film. Despite the lack of R-rated movies in the franchise, Feige confirmed that Marvel Studios won’t be looking to curb Deadpool’s signature style. “It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now,” said Feige back in January.

In other Deadpool news, the Merc with a Mouth has been front and center in the marketing world recently. The superhero featured in his “first” MCU crossover as he sat down with Korg from Thor: Ragnarok to promote Reynolds’ latest film, Free Guy. As it turns out, Reynolds’ marketing pitches didn’t stop there. IGN recently reported that the actor floated the idea of a Deadpool and Bambi crossover to Disney in which the superhero would have sat down to interrogate the hunter who killed Bambi’s mother. Spoilers, it’s not what you think – or actually, maybe it’s exactly what you think.

Netflix Confirms The Witcher Season 2 Starts With A Grain Of Truth Story

Netflix’s The Witcher is returning for its second season in December, and now we’ve learned that it will kick off with an adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story, A Grain of Truth. In a new video from Netflix Geeked, showrunner Lauren H. Hissrich acknowledged that it’s been the “worst kept secret that we’ve had,” which is surely a reference to how Netflix has been teasing some kind of reveal for A Grain of Truth for a long time already.

But now it’s confirmed: Season 2 will kick off with A Grain of Truth, and Hissrich said she’s especially pleased to be able to do this because she wasn’t sure if they would get to work on more short story adaptations on the show. The episode features Geralt, Ciri, and Nivellen, who is new to the series and will be played by Kristofer Hivju from Game of Thrones.

“It’s a story of a father and daughter coming together in a place that doesn’t quite feel safe for them. And of course, we really get into Nivellen, who is played by the incomparable Kristofer Hivju,” Hissrich said. “And we get to explore his character and his back story with Geralt as well. It’s really the perfect kick off for season two because it’s about family. It’s about the secrets that we keep from each other, and it’s about the monsters that we are inside sometimes.”

The Witcher: Season 2 premieres December 17 on Netflix. Ahead of that, Netflix’s Witcher anime, Nightmare of the Wolf, debuts on August 23.

Outside of the TV series, a new Pokemon Go-style game called The Witcher: Monster Slayer is out now, while The Witcher 3’s new PS5 and Xbox Series X|S edition will launch this year.

The Suicide Squad: Who Dies in James Gunn’s DCEU Movie?

Full spoilers ahead for The Suicide Squad!

In a film called The Suicide Squad, it’s a given that there would be a high body count, even among leading characters. After all, the James Gunn-directed film’s marketing tagline is “don’t get too attached.” So we were warned!

And as promised, The Suicide Squad kills off many but not all of the lower-tier DC supervillains and antiheroes — along with several other supporting characters — comprising Task Force X.

So, once again, we are about to get into full spoilers for James Gunn’s latest comic book movie …

Who Dies in The Suicide Squad?

Polka-Dot Man

Standing tall alongside the Squad in their heroic last stand against Starro the Conqueror, the mommy issues-laden Abner Krill (played by David Dastmalchian) proudly declares himself a superhero — and is then quickly squashed by one of Starro’s massive prehensile extremities. Abner’s journey from outcast to antihero, and his finding people to finally belong to, is one of the key emotional character arcs in James Gunn’s film.

The Detachable Kid

Early on in the film, Nathan Fillion’s T.D.K., aka The Detachable Kid, is called into action during Task Force X’s beachhead assault on Corto Maltese. As his name implies, The Detachable Kid’s powers are … strange and silly. He detaches his arms, which hover across the beach to slap around the rebel gunmen. Needless to say, slaps prove ineffective and the armless T.D.K. is summarily riddled with bullets and dies on the beach.

Blackguard

Task Force X already includes a member named Weasel but a case could be made that Pete Davidson’s Blackguard turned out to be the biggest weasel of them all. After selling out the team’s position to the Corto Maltese, Blackguard approaches the rebel gunmen on the beach declaring he’s the one they made the deal with. Instead of making it to safety, though, Blackguard gets his face shot off by the rebel troops instead.

Captain Boomerang

He survived the first film and a run-in with the Flash but Jai Courtney’s Aussie supervillain doesn’t make it out of Corto Maltese alive. During the opening beachfront assault, Boomer gets toasted in the explosion of a crashing helicopter, his boomerang-clutching severed arm left standing, almost defiantly, in the aftermath.

Starro the Conqueror

It took the combined efforts of a javelin-wielding Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Polka-Dot Man and King Shark to finally bring down the massive cosmic kaiju Starro as it laid waste to Corto Maltese and threatened to escape the island. Starro’s death is not without a degree of sympathy, though, as the creature bemoans that it was happy out among the stars before humans incarcerated it.

Ratcatcher I

Taika Waititi played the small but pivotal role of the father of Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher II. She recalls how her father taught her the value of these overlooked animals, deemed vermin and outcasts by most of society. Ratcatcher I, though, was a drug addict and he died in the streets of Portugal of an overdose, leaving his daughter alone, save for her beloved rats.

Savant

The Suicide Squad opens by following Michael Rooker’s long-haired supervillain from recruitment to deployment on Corto Maltese. But after seeing how outmatched his team is, Savant panics and flees from the beach and back into the ocean. Despite repeated warnings from Amanda Waller to return to the fight, Savant keeps wading out into the water — at which point Waller has the explosive implanted in Savant’s neck detonated. His decapitated corpse floats in the bloodied water, a bird landing atop it in a darkly humorous wink to the bird Savant killed with a ball back in prison.

Mongal

The desk jockeys at Belle Reve wondered aloud whether Mongal (played by Mayling Ng) was an animal or an alien. They never get their answer because she only lasted mere moments in the film, perishing in the early beach battle. Mongal grabs onto the landing skids of a military helicopter, causing it to crash and burn, killing her and more in the process.

The Thinker

After decades of experimenting on Starro the Conqueror, the giant cosmic kaiju breaks free from his confinement in the Jotunheim lab and gets his revenge on his longtime tormenter, Peter Capaldi’s Thinker, by tearing him to bloody, chunky pieces.

Colonel Rick Flag

Task Force X’s field commander, once again played by the first film’s Joel Kinnaman, is slain by Peacemaker (John Cena) during a brawl in Jotunheim. Flag wanted to expose the nefarious, US government-backed goings-on at Jotunheim, while Peacemaker vowed to adhere to Amanda Waller’s instructions to keep the matter secret. A fight ensues between the two men as Jotunheim begins to fall apart, with Peacemaker finally getting the upper hand and stabbing Flag in the heart.

Javelin

This ostentatiously garbed, javelin-wielding D-lister, played by Flula Borg, suffers mortal wounds in the beach assault on Corto Maltese. He dies lying next to Harley Quinn, bequeathing unto her his javelin — the meaning behind which is lost on Harley until the final battle against Starro.

Presidente General Silvio Luna & Mayor General Mateo Suarez

Having just made love to Harley Quinn, Luna (played by Juan Diego Botto), the newly installed dictator of Corto Maltese, has big, romantic dreams of how Harley could become his wife given the love his people have for her. But when Luna reveals his plans include the loss of innocent life, especially children, Harley shoots him dead in the chest. Even Harley, who was once madly in love with Joker, has a line she will not cross.

Luna’s top military officer, played by Joaquín Cosío, takes over after Harley kills Presidente Luna. Alas, Suarez’s reign proves even shorter than his predecessor’s. He is among the Corto Maltese citizens who become controlled by the spores Starro launches, turning into one of Starro’s possessed minions. Suarez and the others all perish when their host Starro is slain by the Squad.

Milton

Ah, Milton, we hardly knew ye. The team’s van driver (played by Julio Cesar Ruiz) just sort of tags along during the Squad’s final assault against Jotunheim, getting shot dead in the process. Sadly, no one else on the team even remembers him except for Polka-Dot Man.

Who Survives in The Suicide Squad?

Harley Quinn

Despite James Gunn’s proclamations that he had “carte blanche” to kill any character, Margot Robbie’s merch-moving maven of madness was indeed the safest bet on who would survive to the end credits. Despite Harley surviving, Robbie has said she needs a break from playing Harley Quinn for a while so it’s not certain when fans will see Harley again.

Bloodsport

Idris Elba’s master assassin, Robert DuBois, blackmails Amanda Waller into granting him his freedom and sparing his daughter Tyla from her devious machinations. DuBois gets his second shot at life but it remains to be seen if Elba’s time in the DCEU is one and done or if we will see Bloodsport again.

Peacemaker

Although it looked like Bloodsport had killed him during the final act on Jotunheim, stay through the end credits scene and you’ll learn John Cena’s Peacemaker survived Bloodsport’s attack. But he is badly hurt. Peacemaker is hospitalized with multiple injuries but is expected to survive. After all, he has his own HBO Max series on the way which will once again see him working on Amanda Waller’s covert ops missions.

King Shark

“Haaaaand!” The simple-minded Nanaue (voiced by Sylvester Stallone) survives multiple thrashings from Starro and numerous gunshots. If or when King Shark will return to the DCEU, though, remains to be seen.

Ratcatcher II

Daniela Melchior’s character is the heart and soul of The Suicide Squad, the least violent and most compassionate of the outcasts populating Task Force X. Ratcatcher II — and her beloved rat Sebastian — survives the devastation of Corto Maltese and has a chance at a new life thanks to Bloodsport’s climactic blackmailing of Amanda Waller.

Weasel

Like Peacemaker, Weasel is another character whose fate didn’t turn out to be as fatal as it first seemed. After apparently drowning during the beach assault on Corto Maltese, the mid-credits scene reveals Weasel survived. The creature, played by Sean Gunn, wakes up spitting up water before scurrying off into the wild.

Amanda Waller

Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller is arguably never more imperious, frightening or flat-out villainous than she is in The Suicide Squad. But despite her own staff violently rebelling against her wishes to kill Task Force X and let Starro escape, Waller survives to scheme another day. It’s not known yet if or when Davis’ Waller will return to the DCEU.

Tyla DuBois

Bloodsport’s daughter (played by Storm Reid) was probably never at any true risk of dying but her future nevertheless seemed bleak until the end. Estranged from her dad Bloodsport and with prison time hanging over her head due to a recent offense, Tyla is ultimately spared thanks to her dad’s blackmailing of Amanda Waller, who threatened Tyla’s freedom just to get Bloodsport on her team.

Sol Soria

While the Corto Maltese freedom fighter (played by Alice Braga) lost many of her troops along the way, Sol Soria and her allies prevailed in the end in ousting the Luna administration and taking back their government.

Waller’s Crew

Amanda Waller’s aides John Economos (Steve Agee), Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), and Flo Crawley (Tinashe Kajese) rose up against Amanda Waller and lived to tell about it. Economos and Harcourt are seen in the end credits scene and will also reprise their roles for the forthcoming HBO Max series Peacemaker.

The Suicide Squad Post-Credits Scenes Explained

Warning: full spoilers ahead for The Suicide Squad!

Does James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad have mid- and post-credits scenes? It absolutely does, and we’re going to explain what they mean and what comes next.

But to explain the credits scenes at the end of DC’s The Suicide Squad, we’ll need to go into full spoilers, so beware!

The Suicide Squad Mid-Credits Scene

The Suicide Squad mid-credits scene returns us to the Corto Maltese beach from the beginning of the movie where many Task Force X members met their grisly end. We see that Weasel (Sean Gunn) survived his apparent drowning and is back on his two furry feet.

Weasel’s watery death was played off as a joke, as the mission coordinators back at base blamed each other for not checking to make sure Weasel could swim before sending him on a mission where he would have to dive into the ocean and swim to shore. But now Weasel is alive, so who’s laughing now?

The Suicide Squad Post-Credits Scene

The Suicide Squad’s post-credits scene reveals that John Cena’s Peacemaker also survived his seemingly mortal wound. Two of Amanda Waller’s subordinates, John Economos (Steve Agee) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), check-in on him recovering in a hospital, saying they need him for a new mission.

Peacemaker lost his climactic gun duel against Idris Elba’s Bloodsport and caught a teeny, tiny bullet in his neck, and though the blood gushing from his neck looked convincingly fatal, it turns out he managed to hang onto dear life. This twist won’t be a surprise to anyone who already heard the news that Peacemaker will be starring in a spin-off TV show set to debut on the HBO Max streaming service in January 2022.

The Peacemaker show is written by The Suicide Squad’s James Gunn, who will also be directing some of its eight episodes.

Cena will once again play Peacemaker as part of an ensemble cast. Reprising their roles from The Suicide Squad is Steve Agee as John Economos and Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt. Freddie Stroma will play Adrian Chase aka Vigilante, a gun-toting DC Comics anti-hero. Joining them will be two characters created for the show, Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) and Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks).

Though no official plot details have been released, the post-credits scene leads us to believe the show will follow Peacemaker on whatever new mission he’s been assigned. Given how his secret mission to destroy all evidence linking the United States to Starro was a key point in The Suicide Squad, it wouldn’t surprise us to learn more about how he became Amanda Waller’s special enforcer.

It’s probably a given that the show will delve into Peacemaker’s backstory. In the comics, he was a troubled army veteran named Christopher Smith who became dedicated to the contradictory philosophy of achieving peace through whatever violent means necessary. After committing a heinous war crime, he was “rehabilitated” by the US government, and became the costumed anti-hero Peacemaker. So there’s plenty of material for the Peacemaker show to cover.

What did you think of The Suicide Squad and its two end-credits scenes? Let us know in the comments. And also be sure to check out our The Suicide Squad review and our breakdown of everyone who died in The Suicide Squad.

The Suicide Squad: So Who Does Taika Waititi Play?

James Gunn’s new Suicide Squad movie has a massive cast and plenty of big names to go around between familiar faces like Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and newcomers like Bloodsport and Peacemaker (played by Idris Elba and John Cena, respectively). But one name on the cast list piqued the interest of many fans–fan-favorite Taika Waititi has been signed onto the project in a mystery role for months.

First, many guessed that Waititi would be voicing King Shark, a giant, anthropomorphic man-eater in board shorts who would definitely be hilarious with Taika’s familiar New Zealander accent, but Gunn himself squashed those rumors early on. He explained that he had actually got Sylvester Stallone to do the voice acting for King Shark, so fans would have to keep guessing.

Minor spoilers for The Suicide Squad below.

But the movie has finally arrived on HBO Max and in theaters, meaning we now have a definitive answer: Taika’s cameo is Ratcatcher 1, the father of Ratcatcher 2, who gets a couple of flashback moments to really establish Cleo’s character. According to her, he was a genius inventor with an unfortunate heroin habit that left the two of them struggling on the streets of Portugal, where he used his inventions to summon rats to aid them.

No Caption Provided

Tragically, Ratcatcher 1 eventually died, leaving Cleo on her own, and she wound up in jail after a botched attempted robbery.

All told, we only get a couple of lines from Taika at the very end of the movie in a second flashback, where he relays to a young Cleo that rats may be the lowliest animals in the world but they “have purpose”–a memory that inspires Cleo to use her rat-controlling technology to overwhelm and take out Starro once and for all.

The Suicide Squad is now showing in select theaters and streaming on HBO Max.

Quentin Tarantino Wants To Make A Rambo Movie With Adam Driver

John Rambo one of the best-known characters to come out of the 1980s, and helped make Sylvester Stallone into the mega-star he is today. Quentin Tarantino sees a new future for Rambo, however, in Adam Driver, the director said on The Big Picture Podcast.

Tarantino is known for his auteur films like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2, and Pulp Fiction, but he seems to be considering, if only in fun, an adaptation as his next project.

“If I just wanted to make a good movie, that I knew would be good, I would take David Morrell’s novel for First Blood and do the novel. Not the movie that was made out of First Blood. I would do the novel. And Kurt Russell would play the sheriff, and [Adam Driver] would play Rambo. Every time I read it, the dialogue is so fantastic in the David Morrell novel that you’re reading it out loud. It would be so good. But now I want to do more than that. But if it was just about to make a good movie, that’s out there.”

These days, Rambo is somewhat of a joke in American pop culture, remembered a relic of Reagan-era jingoism and, more recently, an actor playing a character he’s a bit too old for. But Rambo first came to life in the pages of David Morrell’s novel, First Blood.

While the film is good in its own right and maintains the focus on the ways war can destroy a soldier’s life even after they return home–it’s a pretty early example of a soldier dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder on screen–the book is quite different. Set in Kentucky rather than the Pacific Northwest, the local police are far less sadistic than in the film, with a standard prison haircut triggering Rambo’s flashbacks and reaction, rather than the brutal torture he endures in the film. Rambo and his adversary, Will Teasle (Chief of Police instead of Sherriff), are also shown to be equally determined and dangerous. After Rambo kills many of the local police officers–he only wounds them in the film–Teasle gets the upper hand and shoots Rambo in the stomach. The story ends with Rambo’s mentor, Trautman, killing him. In the film, Rambo walks away in a blanket. He’s not framed as a hero in either case, but instead as a troubled man left behind by his country after the war.

The movies that came after First Blood moved further and further away from the original character and into unintentional parody in the next two films. Tarantino wants to make something much closer to the book. Adam Driver likely comes to Tarantino’s mind both for his well-regarded performances in movies like BlacKkKlansman and Marriage Story and for his time in the United States Marine Corps (though he never saw combat).

Is this movie likely? It seems like Tarantino is just musing about what he’d do if he had all the time in the world–his version of picking up carpentry or some other time-consuming hobby. With that said, Adam Driver could make a killer Rambo in both senses, and we’d definitely watch.

South Park: Kristen Schaal Reveals How She Was Fired From the Show After Just One Month

Kristen Schaal has had a lot of success over the years thanks to Flight of the Conchords, Bob’s Burgers, and other comedy hits. But few realize that she also had a short stint as a writer on South Park in 2007, mostly because she was fired after just one month.

In a new interview with The Daily Beast, Schaal opened up about her time in South Park’s writer’s room, admitting that she was a shade too eager to earn her keep. “I was pitching too much. I’d never been in a writers’ room before. So I was just like, let me earn my keep. I was like, ‘How about this? How about this? How about this?’ And that’s not how it works.”

Schaal says she came into the job as an established fan of South Park, which added to her anxiety. “I mean, I am such a South Park fan. I think South Park is honestly one of the most underrated cultural shows. I think people have taken it for granted at this point. But it is such a force. And I grew up in Colorado, I went to school at the University of Colorado for a year. So I was in awe.”

It didn’t last long, though. “I was there for like a month and I was told—I got a warning that I was talking too much.”

It didn’t help that South Park was big on movie parodies in 2007, and that she wasn’t much of a movie buff herself. “I couldn’t go there, so I just kept pitching another thing. So looking back, yeah, they let me go. I could do a writers’ room now, just for everybody listening, but I was too nervous and too excited to be in there.”

It all worked out fine in the end. Schaal says she has no grudge against creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, though does say that the news that she had been let go was “devastating.” She would go on to plenty of success elsewhere, from appearances on The Daily Show to playing Louise Belcher in Bob’s Burgers.

As for South Park, it’s still going, with Stone and Parker inking a deal that it will take it through its 30th season. The pair will also produce 14 new movies and a game. Make sure to check out the rest of our South Park coverage, including the news that Stone and Parker will be buying a landmark restaurant featured in the show.
