The Batman Delayed to 2022, The Matrix 4 Moved Up to 2021

The Batman has been delayed from October 1, 2021 to March 4, 2022, while Matrix 4 has been moved up from its April 1, 2022 release date to December 22, 2021.

As reported by Variety, The Batman was one of certain movies delayed by Warner Bros. that also include The Flash and Shazam 2. The Flash was delayed from its June 2, 2022 date to November 4, 2022, while Shazam 2 will debut in theaters on June 2, 2023 instead of its original date of November 4, 2022.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/the-batman-trailer-dc-fandome-official-footage”]

This news also follows the delay of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune remake from December 18, 2020 to October 1, 2021, taking the spot previously held by The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson and is being directed by Matt Reeves.

Warner Bros. has also shifted two yet-to-be announced films scheduled for June 3, 2022 and August 5, 2022, and has taken Black Adam (set for December 22, 2021) and Minecraft (set for March 3, 2022) off the release calendar.

The Batman’s delay is another bump in the road for the production that was recently put on hold due to Robert Pattinson’s quarantine after allegedly being diagnosed with COVID-19.

The Batman received its first trailer at DC FanDome, and it gave us a glimpse of a younger Batman working to take down a masked serial killer and deal with a vast conspiracy linking some of the most powerful families in Gotham.

As for The Matrix 4, while it will see the return of characters like Keanu Reeves’ Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity, it looks like Laurence Fishburne won’t be back as Morpheus.

The Third Day Episode 4 Review

This review of HBO’s The Third Day Episode 4, titled “Monday – The Mother,” contains full spoilers. To remind yourself where we left off, read our review of The Third Day episode 3.

[poilib element=”accentDivider”]

With this week’s installment, HBO’s The Third Day enters its next chapter. Up to now, we’ve followed Jude Law’s Sam, from his arrival to the island enclave Osea through his discovery of the strange history and rituals therein, but his story came to some kind of conclusion in last week’s episode (and was further expanded upon in the “Autumn” live event, which can still be watched here). That conclusion was frustrating for its opacity. Yes, answers were given, but those answers weren’t particularly satisfying.

In that sense, the problem besetting The Third Day’s fourth hour, “Winter – The Mother,” is the same one that vexed the first three: It’s a lot of mood and build-up in anticipation of a payoff that remains just out of reach. This time we come in on new lead Helen (Naomie Harris), who has taken her daughters Ellie (Nico Parker) and Tallulah (Charlotte Gairdner-Mihell) out of school for a vacation to Osea – or so she tells them.

[poilib element=”poll” parameters=”id=997b0e98-ef47-4063-b82f-532c04138175″]

As should be apparent by now, there’s always more going on than meets the eye. And with respect to her reasons for either leaving the mainland or coming to the island, Helen is clearly driven by more than wanderlust, with the added question of whether what we’re seeing now ties in (if at all) with what we’ve seen before. After she finds the room she reserved (via Airbnb, lest we think this enclave exists to one side of the modern world) unavailable, her difficulty at trying to find shelter on Osea reveals a palpable panic.

Like Sam before her, there’s something deeper troubling Helen than the immediate situation, and as with Sam, her frustration in trying to navigate this circumstance makes her more relatable rather than less. As she encounters familiar faces like the Martins (Emily Watson, Patty Considine) and Larry (John Dagleigh) we’re left to wonder what Helen’s role is in the larger story, and what – if any – connection she has to what we’ve seen already, especially given what we know about the strange history of the place.

[poilib element=”quoteBox” parameters=”excerpt=The%20Third%20Day%20is%20a%20lot%20of%20mood%20and%20build-up%20without%20the%20payoff.”]

As our central focus, Harris is a strong presence (American audiences will likely know her best as Miss Moneypenny in the recent James Bond films) who ably commands the center of this portion of the story while also bringing an entirely different energy than Law. She has a good rapport with the girls, and it’s also nice to see her interacting with the old Osea familiars as she tries desperately to make heads or tails of what’s going on.

The problem then is the way the “Winter” segment of The Third Day feels a bit like watching James Franciscus in the first half of Beneath the Planet of the Apes, going through a sped-up version of what Charlton Heston went through in the original film. We’ve seen this before, and now we’re waiting for the new character to catch up. In this case, while we were always on the same page as Sam, as confused and weirded out as he was, now we’re a few steps ahead of Helen as we watch her go through the same steps we’ve already seen.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=tv-shows-that-killed-off-a-main-character&captions=true”]

That said, there’s no denying that the creatives (director Philippa Lowthorpe takes over for these final three episodes) make good use of our familiarity with the setting and scenario to maximize the mood and portent. The opening scene, as Helen and the kids arrive at the infamous causeway (that damned causeway!) and begin the dreaded drive to Osea has an air of both allure and ominousness. It’s a nice bit of filmcraft that makes the hour feel a bit less redundant than it otherwise might.

Without spoiling anything, yes, by hour’s end there is clearly a connection established between Helen’s journey and Sam’s, but the nature of that connection and how deep it goes is something it falls to future episodes to elucidate. Finally, credit must be given once again for the show leaving us with a cliffhanger that makes it pretty hard not to come back next time, even if the rest of the episode leading up to it didn’t deliver a terrific reward for the previous one.

Monster Hunter Movie Release Moved Forward Into 2020

It’s been a tumultuous time for cinemas, with many big 2020 films–including Black Widow, No Time to Die, and F9: The Fast Saga–moving to 2021 release dates. But now, one movie scheduled for 2021 has actually moved forward into an otherwise quiet December 2020 release slot–Monster Hunter.

The new film from Paul W. S. Anderson, who previously directed all the live-action Resident Evil movies, has moved from an April 23, 2021 release date to December 30, 2020, Sony has announced. This will make it, by default, one of the biggest films to hit a cinema this year.

This is the release date previously occupied by Escape Room 2, another Sony film, which has now been shifted into 2021. A specific release date for this sequel has not been announced.

Monster Hunter was originally set to release in September 2020, but it was delayed earlier this year. That month, we instead got an official synopsis for the film. You can watch the film’s first trailer below–but it’s very short, so don’t expect a lot of insight from it.

Monster Hunter stars Milla Jovovich, who also starred in the Resident Evil movies.

Sony also announced a release date for The Kid Detective, written and directed by Evan Morgan. The film, which stars Adam Brody as a former child detective who is brought into a murder investigation, is due on October 16.

A new Monster Hunter game is on the way to Switch in 2021. It’s called Monster Hunter Rise, and it will release on March 26, 2021.

Disc Room Brings Brutal Buzzsaw Action To PC And Switch This Month

Disc Room, Devolver Digital’s upcoming game about running through rooms full of razor-sharp buzzsaws, has a release date and a Switch version on the way. The game, previously announced for PC, will hit both Steam and the Switch Eshop on October 22.

Nothing we write is going to sum up Disc Room quite as elegantly as the description at the start of the video below: “Disc Room is a game about rooms with discs. Really, really sharp discs.”

The game is set in 2089, when a giant disc appears around Jupiter. For whatever reason, you’re sent in there to explore it–and it turns out the rooms in the disc are filled with traps.

There are unique goals to complete in each room, all of which revolve around dodging between saws. Sometimes the goals you’ll need to complete are obtuse, and are more like puzzles than reflex tests.

You’ll also unlock new abilities throughout Disc Room as you die repeatedly, which will make rooms easier to complete. Leaderboards in each level will let you know how you compare against other players, too.

PS5 Swaps Buttons, Cyberpunk 2077 Goes Gold, & Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Gets Remastered | Save State

In this video, Persia talks about PS5 swapping the X and circle functions in Japan. They will no longer use X to cancel and circle to accept, but will instead match the Western functions of X for accept and circle for cancel. The change comes to PlayStation in Japan after 26 years but will only apply to the PS5 user interface, not necessarily in games. There hasn’t been any word yet on if players can customize these functions when the next-gen console releases.

Persia also talks about Cyberpunk 2077 officially going gold, which means the code has been certified and pressed to a disc. Someone reportedly even got their hands on a boxed copy and leaked a physical map and other items in the box. Cyberpunk 2077 comes to PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 19th, with PS5 and Series X & S versions in the works. Those come with a free upgrade to your respective next-gen console when they release.

Lastly, Persia talks about the announcement of Need For Speed: Hot pursuit getting a remaster. It’s coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 6, then to Nintendo Switch on November 13. The remaster will include cross-play, enhanced visuals, and all of the DLC.

This is your Save State for Monday, October 5th.

Among Us Dev Is Trying To Stop Cheaters

Among Us players have started to experience different types of cheating when they hop into matches. Thanks to cheaters, players have had their nicknames edited, their entire crews ejected at the start of the match, and had games where there was an extra impostor. The three person studio Innersloth has been trying to tackle the problem.

“We’re rushing to get an account system in place so we can have better moderation and reporting systems built around that,” Among Us programmer Forest Willard told Kotaku. “Also getting help with making the servers better at detecting and blocking hacks. And investigating client-side hack prevention as well. I’m sort of scrambling to get all the right people in place, but I’m attacking it from multiple angles so it can get better in many ways hopefully all at once.”

There is no reward, cosmetic or otherwise, for winning in Among Us, which makes the presence of cheaters and griefers particularly odd.

Among Us saw a huge uptick in players over the last few months after multiple streamers broadcasted the game. The popularity, just like Fall Guys before it, brought a number of cheaters to the online game. Innersloth didn’t expect any of this success so they are racing to get basic features, like accounts, set up. The studio cancelled their planned sequel in order to focus on improving the current game.

While Innersloth works to implement these changes, the best way to avoid cheaters is to get a group of friends together and play with them.

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered Announced With November Release Date

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered has been announced, and it’s coming out for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 6. A Nintendo Switch release will follow on November 13.

The Criterion Games-developed Need For Speed Hot Pursuit came out 10 years ago and is still a fan-favorite. It’s being released this November with updated visuals, all of its DLC, cross-platform multiplayer, and more in the form of a remaster from EA. You can check out the remaster’s reveal in the trailer below:

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/05/need-for-speed-hot-pursuit-remastered-official-reveal-trailer”]

“Unleash a savage sense of speed both as an outlaw and a cop in this timeless racing experience updated for today’s platforms,” a blog post detailing the announcement reads. “Get cross-platform multiplayer and Autolog, enhanced visuals, all main DLC delivered at launch, and much more. It’s time to reignite the pursuit.”

This remaster will be presented with updated visuals across all platforms. The Nintendo Switch version runs at 1080p/30fps in its docked mode and 720p/30fps undocked. Depending on PC specifications, the PC version can play up to 4K/60fps and the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X can play at either 4K/30fps or 1080p/60fps. The base version of those consoles plays at 1080p/30fps.

“In addition to the listed improvements for the Nintendo Switch version, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions, (the game has also been) updated with upressed UI, higher resolution reflections, boosted textures, more particles, and improved AA/SSAO,” the blog post reads.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=need-for-speed-hot-pursuit-remastered-screenshots&captions=true”]

As mentioned in the trailer above, the game’s multiplayer will feature cross play and rankings will display on your friends’ Speedwalls — leader boards — no matter what platform they play on. In terms of DLC, the remaster includes the SCPD Rebel Racer pack, the Super Sports pack, the Armed and Dangerous pack, the Lamborghini Untamed pack, and the Porsche Unleashed pack, all available at launch. This adds “an extra six hours of gameplay and more than 30 challenges,” according to EA.

The remaster also includes new achievements, car colors, car wraps, reduced hard stops, an updated photo mode and gallery, multiple quality-of-life updates, and more.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Hot Pursuit was notable at the time of its release because it allowed you to race as vehicles on both sides of the law. You could race your best vehicle through Seacrest County’s many roads or you could drive as the police, chasing down those who use the county’s roads as race tracks. Check out our original review of Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, where we awarded the game a 9/10 and called it “pure over-the-top driving entertainment”.

Genshin Impact May Have Made $50 Million Since Launch

Genshin Impact has managed 17 million downloads on mobile alone over the first four days of its release, with analysts estimating that it’s grossed $50 million since launch.

The free-to-play action-RPG arrived on PlayStation 4, PC, iOS and Android on September 28, and mobile analytics company App Annie posted the downloads milestone on Twitter on October 4.

That huge early uptake means that the game is already a top grossing mobile title in across Asia, and in the US. Speaking to IGN, Daniel Ahmad, Senior Analyst at Niko Partners, estimates that the game has grossed $50 million in its first week, with the majority of that revenue coming from China, Japan, and the US.

“The game had more than 20 million pre-registrations prior to launch, of which more than 5 million were from outside China”, explains Ahmad. “This is a huge achievement not just for a Chinese developed game, but for a new original IP too.”

Genshin Impact has been compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild due to its visual aesthetic and design. The game is an open-world action-RPG with gachapon elements, and it has already proven to be quite the success on social media. A Nintendo Switch version is currently in the works too, with a release date unannounced.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/27/genshin-impact-12-minutes-of-gameplay”]

It’s the latest in a series of Chinese games that have caught western attention, which Ahmad says is part of a deliberate attempt to crack new markets: “As the mobile games market matures in China, developers are looking to reach new players, both outside China and on new platforms. Both small and large Chinese studios have been investing in more robust experiences that can scale to console and PC. As many have seen with previously announced games such as Lost Soul Aside, Bright Memory Infinite and Black Myth Wu Kong, Chinese game developers are beginning to make their mark in the West.”

“While the distribution and monetisation model for Genshin Impact are already accepted in China,” Ahmad continues, “the game is popularising AAA free to play and gacha games in the West. [Developer] MiHoYo has worked to ensure that gamers can play the title without needing to pay to progress, while still being able to monetise from those who want to pay and obtain the best characters and equipment earlier.”

If you’re interested in checking Genshin Impact out, take a look at our hands-on preview from March of this year to learn more about how it plays. We’ve also got some Genshin Impact guides to check out if you’re already playing. Here’s the skinny on acquiring wishes and here’s an article explaining how you can play co-op with your friends.

Egypt Unveils 59 Ancient Mummies From 2,600 Years Ago

Egypt has unearthed 59 ancient mummies from 2,600 years ago and fortunately for Brendan Fraser, no curse has been detected.

Egypt’s Tourism and Antiquities Minister, Khalid el-Anany, announced on October 3 that a team of archaeologists discovered dozens of coffins in a necropolis south of Cairo, according to a report from The Washington Post. This led to the discovery of 59 sealed sarcophagi, many of which had mummies inside. It was determined that these sarcophagi were buried more than 2,600 years ago.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=the-25-best-90s-movies&captions=true”]

“I consider this the beginning of a big discovery,” el-Anany said.

That’s because el-Anany said this discovery was just the first of many that he believes will lead to even more sarcophagi from the area. As if Brendan Fraser, who played famed adventurer and tomb raider Rick O’Connell in 1999’s The Mummy, wasn’t already sweating over what might lie within, one of the 59 sarcophagi was opened at a press conference on October 3 to reveal the mummy inside. Fortunately, no curses were released and Imhotep and his army of undead were nowhere to be found.

The mummies were discovered in Saqqara, which is home to 11 pyramids. These sarcophagi were specifically discovered in the Step Pyramid. The burial sites in Saqqara date back to the 1st Dynasty, which ranges from 2921 B.C. to 2770 B.C.E., and to the Coptic period, which ranges from 395 to 492 C.E.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/07/19/mysterious-black-sarcophagus-finally-opened-in-egypt”]

Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziri, told reporters that the coffins likely belonged to priests and other elite figures of the Pharaonic Late period, which ranges from 664 to 525 B.C.E. These coffins were found with 28 statues of Ptah-Soker, the main god of the Saqqara necropolis, and a 35cm bronze statue of Nefertum, god of the lotus blossom and perfume.

El-Anany said these 59 coffins will join 30 ancient wooden coffins discovered earlier this month in Luxor and all of them will be showcased at the Grand Egyptian Museum currently under construction near the Giza Pyramids.

For more mummies, read about this dinosaur mummy discovered in 2017 and then read about what happened when when a mysterious black sarcophagus was finally opened in Egypt last year.
