Gears 5 (Xbox One, PC) — September 10

The newest installment in the Gears of War franchise officially launches on September 10, but players who spring for the game’s Ultimate edition (or subscribe to Xbox Game Pass) can jump in beginning September 6. Gears 5 casts players in the role of Kait Diaz, who throughout the course of the game will uncover secrets about her family’s history and the origins of the Locust. In addition to the campaign, Gears 5 boasts several other game types, including the fan-favorite Horde and Versus modes, which this time feature cameos from Halo: Reach and other unexpected crossovers.

The Legend Of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Switch) — September 20

Nintendo’s marquee release for Switch this month, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, arrives alongside the new Nintendo Switch Lite on September 20. A remake of the classic Game Boy game of the same name, Link’s Awakening finds the titular hero stranded on the mysterious Koholint Island, where he’ll need to gather the eight Instruments of the Sirens to rouse the Wind Fish from its slumber and make his way home. While the game looks to be a faithful reimagining of the original, it also introduces some new content, namely a dungeon editor that allows you to arrange your own custom labyrinths.

Gears 5 Is ‘Grounded in Diversity’ Says Director as Players Praise LGBT, Disability Representation

Gears 5’s developers are making a big effort to make it the most accessible entry in the Gears of War franchise. This includes having 19 different Pride flags available as banners in the Gears 5 multiplayer mode.

“At The Coalition, we believe that gaming is for everyone. And we believe that gaming is better when we embrace the things that make us unique and respect diverse perspectives,” The Coalition studio head Rod Fergusson tells IGN in a statement.

“Gears of War is a series grounded in diversity, and we’re proud to celebrate it in our characters and our players. The ‘Gears 5’ team was incredibly passionate about including flags representing the different aspects of Pride and we’re thrilled players can show up as their authentic selves while playing.”

Why J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter Tease Left Fans Disappointed

J.K. Rowling teased her Twitter followers with an upcoming announcement related to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. It was her first post since January, so fans assumed this was going to be big. Could this be the long-awaited movie adaptation?

Nope. An event was hosted in Times Square and a new poster and logo were introduced for the play.

As you can imagine, the fans on social media weren’t exactly ecstatic.

Brendan Fraser ‘Absolutely’ Interested in Another Mummy Movie

Even though Universal rebooted the Mummy franchise with 2017’s The Mummy, many fans are still holding out hope for another sequel to 1999 movie. It turns out star Brendan Fraser is also eager to return, but only if the hypothetical The Mummy 4 has one crucial element.

Fraser told CinemaBlend he’s “absolutely” interested in reprising the role of dashing adventurer Rick O’Connell. The actors says that after filming three Mummy movies, he’s learned fun is the “essential ingredient” these projects need to succeed.

“Just gotta say, I know how hard it is to make that movie,” said Fraser. “I tried to do it three times, and the essential ingredient is fun. You gotta remember to have fun. So if there’s a fun way to approach it again, I’m all in.”

Xbox Live Is Down, Microsoft Is Working On The Issue

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Xbox Live services are currently suffering an outage. According to the Xbox Live Status page, those trying to connect will find they have limited to no access. The site states that core services such as signing in, as well as creating, managing, or recovering accounts are impacted.

The outage is happening across Xbox One, Xbox on Windows 10, Xbox 360, and Xbox on other devices–so, pretty much anything that can sign into services. Xbox Support on Twitter has acknowledged the issue.

The latest update on the status page states Microsoft’s “engineers and developers are actively continuing to resolve the issue causing some members to have problems signing in to Xbox Live. Stay tuned, and thanks for your patience.”

The outage will no doubt be frustrating to those who have early access to Gears 5, a core component of which is multiple multiplayer mode. Alongside the core campaign, which can be played co-operatively, there’s the competitive multiplayer, Horde mode, and the new Escape mode. Naturally, there are many other games that rely on the Xbox Live network to function properly, most notably Fortnite.

Although Gears 5 is available to a select group of people now, it becomes widely available on September 10. In our Gears 5 review in progress, Phil Hornshaw said it “is very much a return of those best elements of Gears of War” but with “a focus on making the game feel somewhat more adaptive to your particular ways of playing.”

He continued: “Whether you want campaign or co-op, Competitive or Quickplay, there’s an option for you in Gears 5, and plenty of stuff to reward you for time spent and skill gained. Gears 5 might suffer from some of the same storytelling missteps as its predecessors, and it might not venture far out.”

IT Chapter 2: How Richie’s Secret Comes from King’s Book

Full SPOILERS ahead for It Chapter Two and Stephen King’s original book!

It Chapter Two made text what had only been subtext in Stephen King’s original book: wise-cracking Losers’ Club member Richie Tozier is a gay man, and has romantic feelings for his fellow Loser Eddie Kaspbrak.

The character’s sexuality had been hinted at in the book, and over the years many fans theorized that he had more feelings than just friendship for Eddie. Though the movie makes Richie’s sexual orientation and feelings for Eddie explicit, director Andy Muschietti and his sister, producer Barbara Muschietti, say this plot point is drawn directly from King’s work.

Barbara Muschietti told IGN that there was one key Richie and Eddie moment from the book that stuck with her over the years: “The scene of Eddie’s death, when Richie is saying goodbye, and caresses his cheek stuck with me for a good, what, 30 years. The way I interpreted it was that there was love there. I don’t know if romantic, I don’t know. But it feels totally natural that it would be unrequited love. To me, when Andy presented it as a possibility, it felt very natural.”
