NBA Live 19 Review

I didn’t expect to like NBA Live 19 as much as I did. It’s not without its flaws, that’s for sure, but the actual basketball that takes place on its court feels and looks great. It even has some inventive modes, such as a surprisingly entertaining tower-defense style court battle, alongside the money-hungry Ultimate Team mode that’s become a staple of every EA Sports game. But while it feels like a fluid and realistic game of hoops, it also comes up short in the personality department, which allows a lot of potential excitement to slip through its fingers.

Player models look the part of their real-life counterparts, to the point where they’re instantly recognizable — there’s no mistaking Aron Baynes and his manbun for another player. Live 19 also brings back the WNBA players that were introduced in last year’s game and adds the inclusive ability to create a female basketball avatar just like you can with the men.

Red Dead Redemption 2: Rockstar Reveals New Characters’ Names

Rockstar Games spent yesterday rounding up its posse. Put another way, the developer is tweeting out names and quotes for some of the characters coming in Red Dead Redemption 2, most of whom seem to be at least associated with the Dutch Van der Linde gang.

Many of these characters were known to us either from the last game, or our previews of the next – but a few of these characters are being seen or named for the first time. Check out the whole line-up below:

Among the new reveals were Susan Grimshaw, Tilly Jackson and Molly O’Shea. We also see the Marston family to be, from the young John, a really young Jack, and the yet-unmarried Abigail.

The Predator Review

This is an advance review out of the Toronto International Film Festival 2018.

With its bawdy sense of humor, disorderly cast of characters, and hardcore kills and action, The Predator does a lot right to reinvigorate the 31-year-old series. But everything crashes down during its frenzied, messy final act, a disappointing conclusion to what had largely been a fun romp up until that point.

Shane Black (who played a supporting role as Hawkins in the 1987 original) co-wrote and directed this continuation of the franchise, bringing his signature blend of dark, profane comedy, and offbeat familial dynamics to the material. The Predator blends humor and heart as it explores two broken families: one, a group of self-proclaimed “Loonies” – psychologically damaged veterans bound for a military psych ward – and the other is the McKennas, a military family that’s fallen apart for a host of reasons. The latter includes dad Quinn (Boyd Holbrook), a former soldier now employed as a merc, mom Emily (Yvonne Strahovski), and their young son Rory (Jacob Tremblay).

Netflix’s Outlaw King Review

This is an advance review out of the Toronto International Film Fest 2018. Outlaw King premieres on Netflix on November 9.

Netflix’s Outlaw King is a beautiful-looking but uneven historical drama featuring an uncertain lead performance from Chris Pine. The film, which reunites Pine with Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie, has the heart but seldom the fighting spirit of the battle-crying, sword-wielding underdog epics of yesteryear that it wants to evoke.

The story chronicles Robert the Bruce’s (Pine) journey from defeated rebel to King of Scots, waging a campaign to win the crown and unite his countrymen against their English overlords. Shot on location in Scotland, director David Mackenzie (and cinematographer Barry Ackroyd) captures the damp and dreary beauty of his native country. The movie begins with a nearly 10-minute-long, one-take scene that includes an oath ceremony, a duel, and a catapult firing on a castle. It’s a promising start but after that the film progresses on unsure footing, as rough and rocky as the terrain its characters travel. The narrative lurches from perfunctory political scenes to countryside ambushes to quieter moments and then repeat.

Iron Fist Season 2 Finds Its Strength By Learning Its Weakness

This is a spoiler-free review of Marvel’s Iron Fist Season 2, which is now streaming on Netflix.

The greatest strength of Iron Fist Season 2 is that it finally recognizes what most of us figured out in Season 1: Danny Rand is the show’s weak link.

This isn’t entirely Finn Jones’ fault – the Danny we met last season, as written by former showrunner Scott Buck, was arrogant, condescending, and naive by design, and in Season 2, both Jones and new showrunner M. Raven Metzner are faced with the challenge of digging themselves out of that hole before they can attempt to make Danny a hero worth rooting for, as opposed to one we just tolerate in order to spend time with his supporting cast.

Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4: How To Unlock Spidey’s Avengers Infinity War Suit

(Spoilers ahead for both the game and Avengers: Infinity War.) If you’re still a little raw after the brutal ending of Avengers: Infinity War, then seeing this suit in action in the PS4-exclusive Spider-Man title may either make you very happy (yay this costume is great and I can pretend everything is OK with Peter Parker) or very, very sad (oh god it just reminds me of that last scene with Tony Stark MY FEELINGS). Either way, the Iron Spider suit stands as one of the most visually striking in the game, and it makes swinging through the skyscrapers of New York just that little bit cooler.

Unsurprisingly, this suit’s power mimics the one seen in the movie, and sprouts four mechanical arms from Spidey’s back when activated. Within the game, these arms add extra power to Spidey’s attacks, allowing you to bust through even the strongest enemies’ defenses (including shielded foes and those pesky brutes), as well as hit multiple enemies at once. When you’re surrounded and need a quick way to land some hits regardless of the enemy types around you, this suit’s Iron Arms power is a lifesaver.

The Iron Spider Suit unlocks about two-thirds of the way into the game, and when looking at the suits list, it’s the 17th you’ll have access to. The first thing you’ll need to do to nab the Iron Spider is reach level 31. After that, you’ll need to have four crime tokens accumulated, as well as three base tokens and three challenge ones. Once you have those, then Stark’s hopefully-not-final creation for young Peter Parker is yours for the taking.

Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4: How To Unlock The Homecoming Suit

If you’re not a fan of the white spider logo costume you’ve probably seen Spidey rock in most of the pre-release videos and images of Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4, then never fear. Not only does the game feature more than 20 alternate suits (check out our full list of suits coming soon), but it also features the webslinger’s popular Tony Stark-created suit featured in recent big screen films like Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The Stark Suit–as it’s referred to in the game–is actually one of the first ones you’ll have access to. That’s a huge plus, as not only is this suit one of the most aesthetically awesome costumes Spidey’s worn in either the comics or in movies, it also unlocks what is probably one of the most useful powers in the game: Spider-Bro. Initiating Spider-Bro releases a small drone that flies around Spider-Man and zaps enemies with electricity, rendering them temporarily paralyzed and making them easy pickings. The effect lasts for a decent amount of time as well, meaning Spider-Bro can easily become your favorite crowd control move in the entire game.

Unlocking the Stark Suit is pretty straightforward. If you’ve just started the game and are looking at a mainly empty list of boxes in your suits menu, the Stark Suit is actually eighth on the list. You’ll need to be level 10 to get the chance to unlock it, but once you’re there, you’ll also need a few of the tokens you’ve likely already been collecting around New York–specifically, one base token, one research token, and three crime tokens.

And the high tech Stark Suit isn’t the only one from the Homecoming movie featured in the game. If you recall, the Peter Parker in that movie started his crime fighting wearing a simple red hoodie and blue pants, and that simple homemade suit can also eventually be unlocked and worn in this PS4 Spidey title. This suit doesn’t have a specific power that it comes with, and will probably take you a while to achieve, as you’ll need to find every backpack hidden throughout the game.

WildStar Developer Shutting Down, 50 People Losing Jobs – Report

Carbine Studios, the developer of the MMO WildStar and founded by former Blizzard employees, is shutting down. The game is also coming to an end.

Studio owner NCSoft confirmed the closure in a statement to Kotaku. “Today, we are closing Carbine Studios and will begin the process of winding WildStar down to ultimately shutter the game,” the company said.

Refunds will be available for in-game purchases. Additionally, NCSoft said it’s “in the process of identifying the teams that will be doing the work to bring WildStar to a close.”

“These decisions are very difficult to make and we are in the midst of shifting as many of our teammates as possible into other roles within the organisation,” NCSoft said.

According to Kotaku, 50 people are losing their jobs as part of Carbine’s closure. The studio released its first game, WildStar, in 2014; it launched with a subscription model before switching to free-to-play as part of a major update in 2015. The studio was working on and hiring for “a number of exciting new projects,” but it appears that’s all over now.

In 2016, Carbine suffered substantial layoffs due in part to WildStar’s performance in the market. Additionally, the game’s launch in China was canceled. Carbine said PS4 and Xbox One versions of WildStar were possible, but they never happened.

GameSpot has contacted NCSoft in an attempt to get more details about this situation; keep checking back for more.

New Rebel Galaxy Outlaw Trailer Makes Fun Of Star Citizen

Rebel Galaxy, a popular space trading and combat simulation video game, is getting a prequel called Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. This time around, you’ll be leaving the captain’s chair of a capital ship and cozying up in a small gunship.

Outlaw puts you in control of Juno Markev, a rebellious pilot who’s climbing the criminal ladder. You’ll fly your way through a single-player campaign, blasting through enemy threats as you complete missions. According to the game’s FAQ page, there’s over 21 hours of radio music for you to listen to while you’re flying. Between missions, you can gamble or play pool and place bets for new ship parts and upgrades.

A new PSA for Outlaw reveals more details about the game, and finishes up by making fun of Star Citizen‘s pattern of charging its players exuberant fees. This purposively hurtful but playful tone makes up the core of Outlaw’s humor, and can be seen in clips that Rebel Galaxy has tweeted out–like this one where Juno flips off an enemy pilot, spouts a one liner, and shoots them down.

Outlaw won’t feature a multiplayer component and launches on PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC in early 2019. The PC version of the game will have both HOTAS and mouse/keyboard support, and include features for modding. The game costs $30/€30.
