God Of War PS4 Almost Didn’t Have One Of Its Best, Most Important Characters

Sony’s new God of War reboot for PlayStation 4 launches this week behind a glowing critical reception. Here at GameSpot, we thought one of the best parts of the game was the father-son dynamic between Kratos and Atreus. Reviewer Peter Brown said this dynamic “enhances combat and makes Kratos surprisingly relatable.”

As it turns out, there was a point in the development where it was suggested that Atreus be cut from the game or have his role significantly scaled back. That’s according to game director Cory Barlog, who told GameSpot that the game would have been possible without Atreus, but it would have been almost completely different. It would have felt like the Robert Redford movie All Is Lost about a man lost at sea.

“It would have been very different,” Barlog said about if they went forward without Atreus. “The early phase when they told me, “Man, this might be too hard, too expensive, we’re already looking at so many challenges, it’s maybe too much.” When I went back and said, “Alright, fine, if it was not with Atreus, what would it be?” And, it would have been a very, very different game? The comparison I made was, “Alright, it’s gonna be All Is Lost with Robert Redford’; it’s gonna be one character who talks to himself occasionally, but generally, it will be very silent and everyone will talk in old Norse, so that you won’t understand anything anybody’s saying.”

Atreus in the new God of WarAtreus in the new God of War

Presented with this scenario, the higher-ups at Sony gave Barlog the freedom to move forward with Atreus, despite whatever extra cost it might incur.

“I think that threat was enough for them to go, ‘Okay, we’ll take on Atreus.’ So, it was kind of the creative director, passive aggressive, ‘Oh, yeah? Well, we’ll take all the toys away.'”

Lead level designer Rob Davis added that having Atreus in the mix opens up significant gameplay and storytelling opportunities that might not otherwise be possible. You might think that Kratos being the biggest badass in the world would provide enough opportunities for cool gameplay and storytelling, and that may be true, but Atreus adds an interesting element of his own.

“Actually like having Atreus be an expert in Norse language and mythology is awesome because you can do a whole other set of design based on what Atreus is an expert in, that Kratos is sort of not,” Davis said. “And then you get a bit of an odd couple relationship. You know, Buzz Lightyear’s good at one thing, Woody’s good at another thing. So, that’s the foundation of a sort of odd couple.”

Further still, Kratos and Atreus are in a foreign land–Scandinavia. This allowed the developers to establish a third pillar of intrigue.

“You can do a third setup where neither of them really understand what’s going on and then you get cool story telling level design and puzzles and exploration intersecting because they’re discussing the thing they have to work out together,” Davis added. “They end up kind of with things Kratos is really an expert in, things the son is kind of an expert in, and things neither of them are an expert in. And then, when you can write to that, goal to that, design to that, that’s where I think you have a new peanut butter and chocolate between Kratos and Atreus, but it didn’t exist before.”

And regarding the character development that Kratos has gone through, Barlog said people think they know who he is. But he wanted to circumvent expectations and show the audience that no one–a God of War or a person like you or me–can be boiled down to one thing.

“I had just had my son, at the start of this game, and I was kind of looking at it like ‘Oh, wow, how much of myself do I wanna show here.'” — Barlog

“And, I thought, alright, creatively, the best challenge I could ever take on is to actually make people reach the end of this game and go, ‘I either feel bad, I feel connected, or I felt like that moment was specifically related to me, or I have gone through that same thing.'” Barlog said about making Kratos relatable. “If I could achieve that, with a character that everybody thought, ‘Whatever, he’s just a guy that, in a cinematic, goes to kill people,’ now that’s an amazing thing.”

Another factor at play here is that Barlog had a son at the start of the new God of War’s development–and this impacted how he thought of writing Kratos.

“I had just had my son, at the start of this game, and I was kind of looking at it like ‘Oh, wow, how much of myself do I wanna show here.'” How much of my faults do I want the mask and cover up and how many of the dumb things that I’ve doe in my life do I wanna prevent him from doing? And, it’s like, wow, that’s Kratos, that’s Kratos to a T–he has made the worst decision in his life, but be able to actually, earnestly, be a parent.”

If Kratos was merely a soldier who went to war and came home to see his son, this wouldn’t have the same emotional resonance than if he had to deal with his demons at home.

“It’s kind of like, put him in a situation where he has no choice but to deal with it,” Barlog said. “And, in this game, he’d been trying to avoid it, even though he wants to figure this out, he’d been avoiding it for so long, the beginning of this game is all about forcing him into that situation. Honestly, for me, that’s the most perfect dramatic ground to play in.”

We’ll have our full interview with Barlog and Davis going up soon. Keep checking back for more. For now, you can check out GameSpot’s recent God of War stories below.

Xbox Hires Former Tomb Raider Boss, Teases News For E3

The Xbox games team has made a big new hire. Microsoft Studios boss Matt Booty announced today that the company has hired former Tomb Raider and Activision boss Darrell Gallagher to work on the Microsoft Studios Executive Leadership Team.

Booty said he’s “thrilled” for Gallagher to join the team, adding that he is “excited to share more at E3.” For his part, Gallagher said he is “excited to be part of the team,” teasing that there are “good things to come.” Intriguingly, he used the hashtag #E32018 on his tweet. Even all-around Xbox boss, Phil Spencer, chimed in to welcome Gallagher to the team.

Gallagher has worked in video games for decades. According to his LinkedIn page, Gallagher started as Head of Creative at Sony in 1997, before joining Rockstar Games in 2004 as a lead artist. He later moved to THQ to become an Art Director, then he joined Crystal Dynamics as its Art Director in 2005. He was promoted to Studio Head at Crystal Dynamics/Eidos in 2009, before getting promoted again to Head of Product Development and Studios at Square Enix in 2013. In 2016, he joined Activision as SVP and Head of Development before finally coming to Microsoft. Needless to say, he brings a wealth of experience to the Xbox team.

Microsoft is changing things up this year with its E3 showing, which it says will be the company’s “biggest” ever. We don’t know exactly what to expect at this stage, but one possibility is the reveal of Halo 6, which has been discussed but not formally revealed. Microsoft is also said to be working on a PlayStation Now-like game-streaming service separate from Xbox Game Pass.

The Xbox E3 2018 briefing takes place on Sunday, June 11. There will also be briefings from Sony, Bethesda, EA, Ubisoft, and others–here is the full schedule so far.

Fortnite Studio Is Taking My Employees, Radical Heights Dev Says

Cliff Bleszinski, who made a name for himself as the creative director of the Gears of War series at Epic Games before leaving the company to start a new studio, has kicked off a public dispute with his former employer. Bleszinski is accusing Epic of poaching developers from his studio, Boss Key. Both are based in the Raleigh, NC area.

Tweeting today, Bleszinski asked Epic to stop its efforts to “hire away my team,” adding that he’s proud of Boss Key’s newly launched battle royale game, Radical Heights–which runs on Epic’s Unreal Engine 4. Bleszinski went on to suggest that Epic’s reported hiring of Boss Key developers is related to the fact that Radical Heights is a Battle Royale game, and is thus competing against Epic’s uber-popular Battle Royale game Fortnite.

“There’s room at this genre for more than a few games SMH,” Bleszinski said. In another tweet, the developer said Boss Key has “plenty” of ideas for how to make Radical Heights stand out in the Battle Royale genre, but if Epic keeps hiring away its talent, these may never come to light. “We have plenty of ways to make it our own but they may never see the light of day if they keep doing this,” he said.

It is unclear how many Boss Key developers left the studio to join Epic, but the figure is apparently substantial enough for Bleszinski to be airing his grievances in public. In December, Boss Key co-founder Arjan Brussee left the studio to re-join Epic. A former online engineer at Boss Key who has since joined Epic, William McCarroll, said on Twitter that Bleszinski is out of line for calling out Epic about hiring away some of its staffers.

“With all due respect, assuming that Epic is the one starting contact / poaching is a bit presumptuous,” he said. “We all had our own reasons for making the choice to leave BKP for Epic, and to act like we are commodities being stolen is a bit hurtful. We are people first and foremost.”

Epic declined to comment when approached by GameSpot.

Boss Key’s free Battle Royale game Radical Heights launched last week in “X-TREME EARLY ACCESS” on Steam–and it is currently lacking many important features. The studio has pledged to continue to update and improve the game over time.

Best PC Games: Radical Heights Takes Steam By Storm, For Better Or Worse | Steam Punks

Good new multiplayer games? Sure, you could play Radical Heights. But why not check out the amazing SpyParty and Full Metal Furies instead?

So many games that come out on Valve’s Steam service each week, it’s almost impossible for PC gamers to get a good sense of what might be worthwhile. Some games make a huge splash all over the internet, but might not necessarily be worth all the attention. Genuinely amazing games can completely slip under your radar amongst all the noise, and you might be missing out on a hidden gem that’s 100% up your alley. But don’t worry–we’re doing the dirty work of going all of the new release of the past week, and showing you what’s worth paying attention to.

First up, Lobotomy Corporation is a monster management simulator based on the lore of the SCP Foundation. You’ll manage a lab whose goal is to harness monsters as an energy source, and maintain your base in a Fallout Shelter-style management interface as you build new facilities, capture more monsters, conduct research, and assign your subordinates to take care of things. Of course, this isn’t a safe business, and monster outbreaks, deaths, and employee insanity are definitely on the cards.

You’ll also have to deal with emergencies like surprise attacks and base meltdowns, and the fact that your employees tending to the monsters increases the occurrence rate for these disasters. There are way more elements to think about—-this is a dense game with a lot of intricacies, but though there are some noticeable problems with its translations, it’s worth a look if strategic management is your jam.

We implore you to play SpyParty, an incredibly unique competitive multiplayer game ten years in the making. One player takes the role of a spy at a crowded cocktail party, as you hide in plain sight and attempt to complete a series of discreet missions without raising suspicion with your subtle, but distinct, physical actions.

The other player takes the role of a sniper, looking at the party from the outside. The sniper needs to work out which one of the many characters is actually another human, and has one chance to take them out within the time limit. It’s an amazingly deep game that challenges your perception, your capacity for mimicry and performance, and your ability to keep your cool.

It seems like Radical Heights certainly made quite a splash in the past week, for better or worse. The new battle royale game from Lawbreakers studios Boss Key Games is looking to make its mark in the incredibly popular genre dominated by PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite. 1980s nostalgia is their big pull with this one, with bright neon colours, BMX bike riding, and interesting TV game show mechanics to give matches a distinct flavour.

Launching on Steam in ‘X-Treme Early Access’ has certainly earned it some mixed reactions. Unfinished levels geometry and missing animations are putting some people off, but the incredibly lighthearted nature and Joe Esposito songs are getting others on board. It’s free-to-play, so if you’re mildly interested it might be worth trying first-hand.

Finally, from the creators of the wonderful Rogue Legacy comes Full Metal Furies, a ‘true-cooperative’ action RPG. This four-player beat-em-up puts a huge emphasis on working together with your teammates to experiment and perform combo attacks for more efficient damage dealing. Each character class sports unique skills, but no individual is tough enough to go it alone.

The game allows you to play solo by picking two characters and switching between them, but this method is a little more demanding of you. Full Metal Furies boasts a wonderful visual presentation with an incredibly charming cast of characters with chuckle-worth writing to match. The campaign also has more variety than what you might expect from a beat-em-up game, and its RPG elements provide a good amount of skill diversity for your characters as you spend more time with them. If you and a few pals are looking for a hefty new co-op experience: this is it.

Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) Mini Revealed, Will Include Classic Games

Similar to Nintendo’s NES Classic and SNES Classic, Sega revealed that a Mega Drive Mini will be coming to Japan to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original console. The news came from the Sega Fes 2018 event which featured a number of announcements and celebrated the company’s history. Although details are sparse, we know that it will have pre-loaded games on the machine, a form factor of about a quarter of the original size, and a release date sometime this year. As for which games will fill its roster, that remains to be seen. There is currently no word on a North American or European version.

The Mega Drive, known as the Genesis in North America, came out in Japan in 1988 and featured several great games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star IV, and Streets of Rage II, just to name a few. The official AtGames Twitter account said that it is tasked with creating the Mega Drive Mini, although the tweet was subsequently deleted. AtGames is a licensed manufacturer of retro Sega hardware, but its previous Sega Genesis Flashback console was received poorly.

The official Sega twitter account sent the following tweet after the Sega Fes 2018 annoucnement:

A rough translation reads as follows:

“Mega Drive Mini” (tentative name) announced for 2018. While reproducing the design of “Mega Drive” released in 1988 30 years ago, it results in the size of about 1/4. You can enjoy by just connecting to the TV. Details such as the specific release date and title will be announced at a later date.

Sega Fes 2018 came with plenty of other news, like a port of Shenmue I and II coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2018. A number of classic Sega games are also set to roll out for the Nintendo Switch throughout the year; five games are coming this summer. Of course, the most important news was the fact that Persona 5: Dancing Star Night will have DLC costumes from the Yakuza series.

PUBG Savage Map Returns Again Tonight For Some Players

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds‘ smaller tropical-themed map, Codename: Savage, is returning to the Closed Experimental Server very soon. The map will be available for a second round of testing beginning tonight, April 16, giving select PC players another opportunity to try it out before it officially arrives to the game.

The test begins at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET (2 AM BST on March 17) and runs until the same time on Wednesday, April 18. As before, only players who have received a beta key will have access to the Closed Experimental Server. If you received one during the first round of testing, you’re already set to jump in again. Everyone else can sign up for a beta key through PUBG Corp.’s registration site; however, not everyone who registers will be guaranteed entry to the test.

This time around, PUBG Corp. has made a number of changes to the map. Most noticeably, it is denser than it was before, with three new areas added to the middle and southeastern portions of the map. PUBG Corp. has also made a variety of other changes, including increasing how frequently grenades spawn and making boats less common around the map.

Perhaps the biggest change to Codename: Savage is to the redzone and bluezone. The redzone will now be smaller and last for less time; the bluezone, on the other hand, will now vary depending on how many players are left thanks to a new feature that PUBG Corp. says “enables [it] to calculate and adjust its waiting time based on the number of players left alive.”

PUBG Corp. says Codename: Savage “won’t be ready for a full release for a few more months,” making this a rare chance to try it out while it’s still in development. If you still don’t have a beta key for the Closed Experimental Server, here’s how to get access. You can see our impressions of the map in the video above.

Rick And Morty Showed Up Briefly On My Little Pony

The wait for Season 4 of Rick and Morty continues, but in the meantime, how about a My Little Pony cameo? Yes, for whatever reason, a new episode of the ongoing TV series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic featured a pair of ponies who look suspiciously familiar if you’re a Rick and Morty fan.

As discovered by Reddit user Roxopenguim, Season 8, Episode 5 of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic features an extremely brief shot of a waiting line. Right in the middle of the screen are two ponies who don’t match up with everything else–one with spiky blue hair and a lab coat, the other with yellow skin and brown hair. Did I mention the episode is called “Grannies Gone Wild”?

This appears to be nothing more than a brief homage on the part of My Little Pony, rather than any kind of proper crossover. Still, it’s something to see. You can check it out in the image above, which was captured by io9.

Rick and Morty, meanwhile, had its own weirdness to share recently for April Fools’ Day. Adult Swim directed fans to its website, where they could watch a short titled Bushworld Adventures. It came from YouTuber Michael Cusack and is one of the more vulgar things from the show to date.

As for Season 4, there’s still no official word on when it will happen. It might be as long as late 2019 before we get a new episode.

PUBG Savage Map Adds New Areas, Adjusts Bluezone Based On Players Left Alive

PUBG‘s new map, Codename: Savage, is back for another round of testing. Following an earlier run on the experimental test server, developer PUBG Corp. has made a number of changes, some of them significant. Here’s exactly what’s changed from our first experience with PUBG’s third map.

For starters, the map is now denser, as three new areas have been added. The middle of the island is now home to Banyan Grove and Abandoned Quarry, while the southeastern section now has Dock, where you’ll find a giant crane and two large ships. You can see these areas in the images below.

Meanwhile, the redzone will now be smaller and last for less time, while the bluezone will now vary depending on how many players are left. Specifics weren’t shared, but the patch notes on Steam state that a “new feature enables the bluezone to calculate and adjust its waiting time based on the number of players left alive.”

Boats will spawn less often around the map, but towns near the sea will see them show up more consistently. Grenades, on the other hand, will spawn more frequently, while a variety of other, smaller (but nonetheless appreciated) fixes have been implemented. Issues with footsteps’ sound effects are resolved, and weather now changes in real-time, rather than once per match.

Savage’s second testing window runs from April 16-18 and requires a key; here’s how to get access. PUBG Corp. says the new map “won’t be ready for a full release for a few more months,” but we’ll continue to see these brief testing periods in the interim.
