Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix Anthology Includes an All-Star Horror Team

Guillermo del Toro has a new horror anthology series coming to Netflix appropriately titled Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. To help him in this endeavor, he’s enlisted a who’s who of horror talent for his eight-episode series.

As an anthology series, each episode will tell a different story ranging from “macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy.” Del Toro has created two original stories for the season and will serve as executive producer, creator, and co-showrunner for the series.

As for who else will lend their talents to the Cabinet of Curiosities, Netflix has provided a thorough breakdown of the actors, writers, and directors involved with each episode.

  • Essie Davis (The Babadook), Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead), and Hannah Galway (Sex/Life) will star in an episode based on an original story by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Jennifer Kent (The Babadook).

  • F. Murray Abraham (Mythic Quest, Amadeus), Glynn Turman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), and Luke Roberts (Black Sails) will star in an episode written by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) based on a short story by Michael Shea, and directed by David Prior (The Empty Man).

  • Tim Blake Nelson (Watchmen), Elpidia Carrillo (Predator), Demetrius Grosse (Fear The Walking Dead, Lovecraft Country), and Sebastian Roché (The Man in the High Castle) will star in an episode written by Regina Corrado (Deadwood) based on an original story by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Guillermo Navarro (Narcos).
  • Crispin Glover (American Gods, Back to the Future) and Ben Barnes (Shadow and Bone, The Punisher) will star in an episode written by Lee Patterson (The Colony) based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft and directed by Keith Thomas (The Vigil).

  • Peter Weller (Naked Lunch, Robocop) will star in an episode directed by Panos Cosmatos (Mandy) written by him and Aaron Stewart-Ahn.

  • Mika Watkins (Black Mirror) will write an episode based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft and directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Lords of Dogtown) with a cast to be announced

  • Dave Hewlett (The Shape of Water) will be in an episode written and directed by Vincenzo Natali (Splice, Hannibal) based on a short story by Henry Kuttner.

  • Haley Z. Boston (Brand New Cherry Flavor) will write an episode based on a short story by Emily Carroll and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, The Bad Batch) with a cast to be confirmed.

This is a lot of talent and folks will likely be happy to see familiar faces like Lincoln back on the screen, or Kent behind the camera for more horror goodness.

Del Toro has had an ongoing relationship with Netflix having produced several animated films aimed towards children. But along with Cabinet of Curiosities, del Toro is also directing a stop-motion Pinocchio movie for Netflix starring Ewan McGregor as the Talking Cricket.

His next film is a live-action thriller called Nightmare Alley starring Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett.

WoW: Shadowlands 9.1.5 Patch Notes Show AOE Cap Is Being Removed

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands’ upcoming 9.1.5 patch is now live on the game’s public test realm, and fresh patch notes reveal even more changes coming to Blizzard’s MMO that hadn’t been previously disclosed.

The biggest of those changes is the removal of the game’s area-of-effect (or AOE) cap. Added in Shadowlands, the AOE cap makes it so many abilities which are capable of hitting multiple enemies can only affect a maximum number of targets. That will be going away in 9.1.5, which will see abilities that are currently AOE capped instead doing reduced damage to enemies beyond the first five targets.

Now Playing: World of Warcraft: Shadowlands: Chains of Domination Trailer | BlizzCon 2021

A developer note in the full patch notes explains the reason for the change:

“We’ve received a lot of feedback that these abilities not hitting enemies in their range in any way creates a feel problem for WoW combat but is also an issue for trivial encounters like farming legacy content,” the patch notes state.

The developer note goes on to explain that while overall AOE ability damage will be increasing with the removal of the cap, the damage done to each target will be decreasing.

“This solution means these abilities and their relative classes will still have a very strong niche against packs of 4-6 enemies,” the patch notes state. “As always, tuning will change as a result of this shift over the next few weeks based on your feedback from the PTR.”

The AOE change is not currently live on the PTR, but will be added in future builds. Also revealed in the patch notes, but not discussed previously, is that weather effects will be coming to the game’s two primary capital cities of Stormwind and Orgrimmar. Patch 9.1.5 does not currently have a release date.

When it does finally arrive, patch 9.1.5 will be one of the biggest non-content patches in WoW’s modern history, with a long list of fan-requested changes set to be introduced alongside new character creation options. Many in the game’s community feel like their feedback is finally being listened to, but not before some of WoW’s biggest content creators have decided to move on, in part because of Blizzard’s lack of action following the release of Shadowlands.

Others have quit as Blizzard continues to deal with the fallout from a state of California lawsuit accusing the developer of harassment and discrimination towards women. Those allegations have led to the removal of in-game developer references and the departure of numerous Blizzard veterans, including former president J. Allen Brack and former lead level designer Jesse McCree.

Ted Lasso Actor Has A Great Response To The Fan Theory That He’s CGI

There is an ongoing fan theory that the Ted Lasso character Roy Kent is not a real person portrayed by Brett Goldstein but instead is a CGI character. This is obviously not true, but the internet being what it is, the theory has a lot of momentum and is generating many funny headlines.

Goldstein himself has now responded to the wackiness. In a post on Instagram, Goldstein started off by acknowledging that there is a “f**king load of mad sh** happening on the internet today, as usual.”

Goldstein presents the video to camera using his 3D Memoji character as a joke to play up the fact that he is indeed CGI and not a real human. It’s a pretty excellent joke and it’s sure to keep everyone talking about this, and Ted Lasso in general, which is the whole idea.

He goes on, in deadpan: “I just want to clear up something once and for all, I am a completely real normal human man who just happens to live in a VFX house and does normal human basic things like rending and buffering and transferring data. I don’t know what everyone’s f**king problem is.”

Ted Lasso Season 2 is airing now, with new episodes debuting each Friday. GameSpot’s Phil Hornshaw argues in a new editorial that Ted Lasso Season 2 is not in a slump but is instead heading for a breakdown.

Beat This Dentist In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate And You Could Get A Free Cleaning

What would you do for a free dental cleaning? Rob a bank? Steal candy from a baby? How about beating a dentist in a video game? That’s much less frightening, and it’s exactly what Dr. Tej A. Shah is offering to those who can whoop him in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Shah shared a video across social media challenging prospective patients to a humble 1v1 match. If you win, Shah said you will get a free dental cleaning. If you lose? Well, I’ll let the dentist explain in the promotional video below.

That’s right: You would have to go around professing you lost to a dentist.

Shah’s dentistry, Zen Family Dental in Ashland, Massachusetts, will be the spot to redeem the free dental cleaning should you beat him in the fighting game. According to comments under the YouTube video, Shah mains Little Mac but has allegedly been experimenting a little bit more with Mythra/Pyra.

You have to sign up to be a patient to participate in the challenge. While it’s unclear if Zen Family Dental will accept anyone, insurance is not a problem.

We’ve reached out to Dr. Shah for comment and will update if we hear back.

Though Mythra/Pyra may be characters Dr. Shah is playing around with, they weren’t the last DLC combatants to have been added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The acclaimed fighter saw Tekken’s Kazuya Mishima, with his rather complex yet incredibly powerful moveset, join the roster back in June. Unfortunately, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate won’t get more DLC characters, as series director Masahiro Sakurai said additional fighters aren’t coming.

CoD: Black Ops Cold War’s Patch Notes Nerf Fully Auto TEC-9

Today’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s weekly update brings new playlists, but there is also a bit of weapon tuning for multiplayer. Players can also expect more double XP, and there’s a free-access weekend for those who don’t own Black Ops Cold War.

New Playlists

Black Ops Cold War’s featured playlist will now include a new Season 5 Moshpit playlist, featuring 6v6 respawn modes on Echelon, Slums, and Drive-In. The Throwback Moshpit playlist has been updated to include the maps Slums and Drive-In. And finally, the Double Agent: Melee mode will remain for another week of investigative matches.

Now Playing: Call of Duty: Vanguard – Champion Hill Alpha Gameplay

There’s also a new Gunfight Tournament with all-new rewards, which features the new Showroom map.

MP Weapon Tuning

Today’s patch notes also detail new weapon tuning for the EM2 assault rifle, and the TEC-9 and PPSh-41 submachine guns, but most impactful is the nerf for one of the attachments for the TEC-9. The TEC-9’s fully-auto version was a bit too powerful, so Treyarch nerfed the damage for the Full-Auto Repeater Muzzle attachment by 18 percent. Now players shouldn’t be getting melted by Cold War’s newest submachine gun.

Double XP Weekend

Double XP can be earned in Black Ops Cold War for an extended weekend, as it’s a long holiday weekend for the US with Labor Day on Monday, September 6. This extended holiday event will run from September 3 through September 7 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET.

Free-Access

Along with the Double XP event, anyone can download and play Black Ops Cold War from now until September 7 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. This free-access weekend includes access to Cold War’s multiplayer and Zombies content. As an additional enticement, Activision announced that people playing the free access version of Black Ops Cold War who buy the full version of the game will also get the Season 5 Battle Pass and some free tier skips as a bonus.

The full patch notes for September 2 can be seen below, as posted by Treyarch.

Activision also revealed all the details for content in the upcoming Season 5 Reloaded update, which will arrive on September 9. All this new Call of Duty content is coming as Activision Blizzard faces a lawsuit from the state of California over harassment and discrimination against women.

Apple’s AR/VR Headset Could Require an iPhone to Use

We already knew that Apple is hard at work on its own augmented and virtual reality headset. But a new report today suggests that the upcoming hybrid headset may rely on another Apple device to take advantage of all the features available on the device.

In a new report by The Information, the outlet claims that the headset is designed to communicate or be tethered to a host device via a wireless connection, such as an iPhone or another Apple device.

The reliance on another product within the Apple ecosystem is due to the headset’s custom 5-nanometer chips, which Apple recently completed. Though these chips are not as powerful as chips used in other Apple devices, reporting that it lacks a neural engine for AI and machine learning abilities.

Yet, the headset still includes a CPU and GPU, so there’s a chance the device may have some limited features available without another Apple device connected. This chip is also rumored to offer better wireless data transmission, video compressing and decompressing, and energy efficiency features.

This would not be the first time Apple relies on users to be integrated more into its own tech product ecosystem. The Apple Watches with only Wi-Fi connectivity require an iPhone to function. Facebook is another big tech company that was criticized for requiring Quest 2 owners to have a Facebook account in order to use its standalone VR headset.

Alongside a VR/AR headset, Apple is also working on a pair of AR smart glasses with a 2023 launch window.

Tony Hawk Covers The Best Song From His Own Game

When you think of Tony Hawk, who you may have almost recognized at the airport, his many games’ incredible soundtracks probably come to mind. The Birdman is a big fan of the punk rock included in those early games, and he covered the original’s best song with some help from his famous friends. And no, that song is not “Superman.”

The song is “No Cigar” by Millencolin, featured in the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater as well as the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 remake released in 2020. Hawk himself takes lead vocal duties as he skates down the street, with Millencolin lead singer and bassist Nikola Sarcevic taking on background vocal duties. Darrin Pfeiffer, formerly of Goldfinger and currently touring with Punk Rock Karoake, is behind the kit, and pro skater Steve Caballero and Mikey Hawdon both share guitar duty.

The video itself is edited to resemble a video game, with scores and ranks going up over the course of the song. If only it could have been filmed in the Warehouse, which is a real place, it would have been perfect.

You may be surprised by just how well Tony Hawk can belt out the tune, which features some pretty high notes in the chorus and bridge, but this isn’t even the first time he’s done a video like this. He recorded a cover of The Jam’s “In the City” for Punk Rock Karoake earlier this year, and we knew he had some pipes.

As for the game series, it isn’t clear if we’ll get any more Tony Hawk titles anytime soon. Though the remake was well-received, developer Vicarious Visions was absorbed into Blizzard recently. Blizzard and parent company Activision Blizzard find themselves at the center of controversy and a lawsuit that alleges widespread harassment as well as discrimination against women.

Crusader Kings Studio CEO Resigns Over Company Strategy Concerns

Paradox Interactive, the developer-publisher behind a titles including Stellaris, Hearts of Iron, and Crusader Kings, is currently in the midst of an unexpected change in leadership after its CEO resigned due to the company’s future strategy.

As announced by Paradox, Ebba Ljungerud is stepping down from her duties as CEO at the publisher. The company has said that her departure from the role will take place with immediate effect although she will continue working with Paradox for a period of time to “ensure a good handover”.

According to the publisher, Ljungerud’s decision to leave the role comes “due to differing views on the company’s strategy going forward.” Despite her resignation, it seems as though the decision was amicable, with Paradox praising the now-former CEO for the ‘fantastic job’ that she carried out during her tenure at the company.

“During her leadership the organisation, player base and our game projects have been strengthened and grown which give the company a strong base for future growth.” reads a statement from Paradox. “We regret that she has decided to resign but wish her all the best in future endeavours, says Håkan Sjunnesson, Chairman of the Board.”

No details have been offered as to what those differing views are, and why they became irreconcilable enough that the CEO felt she should resign.

Ljungerud’s time as CEO at Paradox was certainly filled with a number of notable moments. During her tenure, the company acquired a number of new studios, brought its first-ever grand strategy game to console, revealed Victoria 3 and launched Crusader Kings 3, which went on to garner high praise. Following her departure from Paradox, Ljungerud briefly looked back at her time with the company on Twitter before thanking both the studio and its fan base.

In light of Ljungerud’s resignation, Fredrik Wester, who served as CEO of Paradox for a number of years before stepping down in 2018, has foregone his role as Chairman of the Board at Paradox to take over as CEO once again. Wester’s appointment will take place with immediate effect with the company veteran confirming on Twitter that the new role is permanent.

Make sure to read our review of Paradox’s latest entry into the Crusader Kings franchise. We awarded the title a full 10/10 and said that it “takes the throne as the new king of historical strategy by expanding on and deepening the best parts of what made its predecessor memorable and unique.” Alternatively, for more on Crusader Kings 3, why not check out this article that details how the game will be coming to consoles.

CD Projekt Is Already Being a Lot More Careful About Announcing Cyberpunk and Witcher Release Dates

After Cyberpunk 2077’s disastrous launch, CD Projekt made a promise to change how it markets its games, including talking about the games closer to their launch. The company’s latest investor calls saw it keeping that promise, as it refused to offer dates for the next-gen versions of Cyberpunk and The Witcher 3 – and wouldn’t even guarantee that they won’t be pushed into 2022 if necessary.

Both Cyberpunk and Witcher 3 are due to receive new console upgrades during late 2021, something CD Projekt reconfirmed during its latest financial reports. During an H1 2021 Earnings live stream, an investor asked the company to be more specific about when those next-gen upgrades would arrive, or if they could feasibly be delayed into next year.

SVP of business development Michał Nowakowski refused to be drawn on the questions, making clear that it was part of CD Projekt’s new philosophy: “Our target is to release the next-gen version of [Cyberpunk 2077] late this year […] At the same time, keeping in mind the lessons we have learned during the past year, and taking into account the fact that this project still remains in deveopment, we can’t say with full certainty that the production schedule will not change, of course.

“And with The Witcher 3, the situation is slightly different in a way that this is being tackled by the external team mainly, which is Saber Interactive, the company we have worked [with] before on Switch and also the updates in the past. As with Cyberpunk 2077, our goal is to release that game still in late 2021. However, similarly, [the] development process is ongoing, and we cannot be absolutely certain that the release schedule will not change. But for the time being, we definitely are aiming with both titles for late 2021 and I don’t want to be more specific at this moment in time.”

CD Projekt is clearly being very careful about messaging when those new versions of games will arrive but, at least in the case of Cyberpunk, the company is working towards a specific 2021 date, not simply making the new version without a deadline. In a separate webcast, CEO Adam Kiciński explained:

“Following our promise to start communication closer to actual releases, we don’t want to say anything more about the next-gen edition [of Cyberpunk 2077] other than that it is planned for the second half of the year. Of course, we have a specific date in mind internally, but it’s too early to say anything about this.”

After a botched launch that continues to cost CD Projekt a lot of money, the company has repeatedly said it’s learned huge lessons about how to approach launching games, With the company now gearing up to work on Cyberpunk and The Witcher simultaneously, we do at least have tentative signs that those lessons are being learned – hopefully leading to games that arrive on the dates promised, and to a sufficient level of quality.
