Facebook to Reverse Australian News Ban

Facebook has confirmed it will be restoring news to its user feeds in Australia after a series of amendments to Australia’s proposed News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code were introduced.

These amendments are intended to “provide further clarity to digital platforms and news media businesses about the way the Code is intended to operate,” according to a joint release from Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and Communications Minister Paul Fletcher.

“After further discussions with the Australian government, we have come to an agreement that will allow us to support the publishers we choose to, including small and local publishers,” said Facebook global news partnerships VP Campbell Brown in a statement. “We’re restoring news on Facebook in Australia in the coming days.”

“Going forward, the government has clarified we will retain the ability to decide if news appears on Facebook so that we won’t automatically be subject to a forced negotiation. It’s always been our intention to support journalism in Australia and around the world, and we’ll continue to invest in news globally and resist efforts by media conglomerates to advance regulatory frameworks that do not take account of the true value exchange between publishers and platforms like Facebook.”

Facebook blocked all Australian and international news from the feeds of all Australian users late last week in response to a proposed new mandatory bargaining code that would force tech companies like Facebook and Google to pay for the journalism they display.

Unfortunately, Facebook’s sudden news ban also resulted in the temporary muting of a large number of non-news organisations, including emergency services, government health departments, cancer charities, satirical comedy websites, video game publishers, and even a host of international sports teams.

Several Australian news organisations have already brokered content deals with Google for their content to be displayed in Google’s News Showcase, reports the ABC. Facebook is yet to do so.

Disneyland’s Magic Kingdom Will Get A Disney+ TV Universe – Report

Disney is hoping to bring its theme parks to life in a brand new way with a project reportedly in the works at Disney+. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the man behind 2004’s Battlestar Galactica reboot and For All Mankind, Ron Moore, is developing a Magic Kingdom franchise for the streaming service.

The first project in the works as part of the so-called Magic Kingdom Universe is The Society of Explorers and Adventurers, a fictional organization developed as part of the mythology of Disney’s parks around the world. SEA was first created for Japan’s Tokyo DisneySea to give a richer backstory to certain attractions. However, nods to the group of characters can now be found at a variety of Disney parks, as well as on the cruise line.

Per THR, the series would explore certain Disney parks characters and be set in a reality where the various themed lands of the parks–and the people in them–are real. Sort of like Tomorrowland, but with less George Clooney and more of a connection to the actual Tomorrowland.

It’s unclear whether new characters would be created for the SEA series or if figures like Harrison Hightower III, Captain Mary Oceaneer, and the rest of the SEA organization that die-hard Disney fans love will be featured. However, THR notes that a small writers room has been assembled while the search for three senior-level writers to work on the project is ongoing. Disney’s Imagineering team is also being consulted, which makes sense–they created SEA and nobody knows the parks better.

Moore will serve as a writer and executive producer on the project. What’s more, if the show is successful, he would be able to further expand the franchise, overseeing additional projects under the Magic Kingdom universe. Working with him on the project are his longtime collaborators, Maril Davis and Ben McGinnis.

That’s not Moore’s only Disney-related project in the works. It was previously announced he’s working on an adaptation of Swiss Family Robinson for Disney+ with Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians). No release dates have been announced for any of these projects.

The Simpsons Replaces Dr. Hibbert’s Voice Actor

The Simpsons announced last summer that the show was in for a casting shakeup, as white actors would no longer be voicing characters of color on the show, including characters like Apu, Carl, and Dr. Hibbert. The new Dr. Julius Hibbert has been cast, according to Deadline; Kevin Michael Richardson will play the character moving forward, replacing actor Harry Shearer for the role. He’ll take over the role starting with the episode scheduled to air on Sunday, February 28, 2021.

Richardson is a veteran voice actor with over 30 years and over 500 credits to his name. He’s voiced characters in the DC and Marvel universes, as well as Star Wars, Transformers, Mortal Kombat, Family Guy, and many others. He also has 76 episodes of the Simpsons under his belt, going back as far as 2009.

Actor Harry Shearer began voicing Dr. Hibbert when he debuted over 30 years ago, and also plays–and will continue to play–other primary characters including Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, and Mr. Burns. Shearer’s last episode voicing Hibbert aired last night, February 21.

Representation in the casting of voice actors, especially on the Simpsons, began receiving more attention at least as far back as 2017, with the release of the documentary “The Problem with Apu.” Though creator Matt Groening was initially dismissive of the criticism–the Simpsons even stoked the flames of the controversy with an episode poking fun at it in 2018–the movement began to pick up steam. Since then, white actors have stepped away from playing characters of color in animated shows from Family Guy’s Cleveland Brown to characters on more recent shows, like Big Mouth character Missy.

On the Simpsons in particular, Hank Azaria has already stepped down from voicing Indian character Apu, though Fox has not yet announced new casting for the role. Another Azaria-voiced character, Carl, is now voiced by Alex Désert. Azaria also continues to voice characters like Moe, Chief Wiggam, and Super Nintendo Chalmers.

Actor Harry Shearer voiced dissent last August, stating that “the job of the actor is to play someone who they’re not,” but added that “people from all backgrounds should be represented in the writing and producing ends of the business so they help decide what stories to tell and with what knowledge. The job is playing someone I’m not.”

Fortnite Is Handing Out Free V-Bucks In Loot Box Lawsuit Settlement

Back in 2019, a class action lawsuit targeted Epic Games over its randomized “Loot Llamas” in Fortnite: Save The World and Loot Crates in Rocket League. Now, a settlement will see Epic Games awarding 1000 free V-Bucks or Rocket League Credits to all players who purchased an offending loot box.

The bonuses will be paid out automatically and will be applied worldwide, despite the class action only technically covering players in the United States. Players in the US who aren’t happy with just V-Bucks can also apply for financial compensation if they meet certain parameters, however.

According to the lawsuit settlement website, players who bought the offending loot boxes can make a claim for monetary compensation “if you believe the purchase gives rise to a claim of consumer fraud, breach of contract, or other claim for damages, or if you wish to obtain a partial refund for a purchase you made as a minor with your own money and without parental permission.”

Notably, Fortnite’s wildly popular Battle Royale mode has never contained random loot boxes, meaning this settlement will only apply for players who have dabbled in the premium “Save The World” mode. The free V-bucks also don’t scale with the original purchases, meaning players who bought one loot box and players who bought 100 loot boxes will both get the same reward of 1000 V-Bucks.

“We stopped offering random item loot boxes like Fortnite Loot Llamas and Rocket League Crates because we realized that some players were repeatedly disappointed by not receiving the random items they hoped for,” Epic’s Tim Sweeney said in a statement. “Players should know upfront what they are paying for when they make in-game purchases.” Fortnite: STW now offers “X-ray Llamas” which show the contents of the box before purchase.

Apex Legends’ Anniversary Collection Event Has Been Extended For A Week

Respawn has extended the Anniversary Collection Event for Apex Legends by another week. So instead of ending on February 23, the limited-time event will continue until March 2 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET.

As a result, you now have seven extra days to unlock the event’s limited-time rewards. Remember, once the Anniversary Collection Event ends, those rewards could very well be gone for good. Respawn has brought back certain weapon and character skins from past limited-time events in subsequent events, but not every one.

Unlocking all 24 rare and legendary rewards in the Anniversary Collection Event will automatically give you 150 Heirloom Shards. That’s enough to unlock any character heirloom you want–heirlooms are the hardest to acquire cosmetic items in Apex Legends. The only other way to unlock 150 Heirloom Shards is to open 500 Apex Packs, which requires you to spend either a lot of money or time.

The Anniversary Collection Event also has a unique rewards track that gifts you extra Apex Packs, three unique Wraith trackers, weapon charms, and more. To unlock these cosmetics, you need to complete daily challenges during the event, such as dealing damage or placing in the top 10.

Apex Legends is available for Xbox One, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. The game is scheduled to release for Switch on March 9.

Mayans MC Season 3 Trailer Is Filled With Death, Violence, And Sons Of Anarchy Connections

A new season of FX’s Mayans MC is only weeks away. The third season of the Sons of Anarchy sequel series launches March 16 and now, thanks to the first full trailer for the upcoming episodes, we have some idea of what to expect–and it’s going to get messy after that Season 2 cliffhanger that left a Sons of Anarchy member dead.

To get you up to speed, given that it’s been well over a year since the last new episode, Season 2 of Mayans MC ended with the titular motorcycle club shooting up the house of a rival gang, inadvertently killing a member of SAMCRO, the flagship charter of the Sons of Anarchy club. The face of the murdered member isn’t shown. However, the Mayans members that carried out the attack react in a way to make it clear this is going to have major ramifications moving forward.

Now, in the trailer, which you can see below, things seem more dire than ever. After being fully patched into the Mayans crew, EZ (JD Pardo) is becoming darker and more violent, as he’s seen senselessly beating somebody while the rest of the club watches on. There’s also plenty of carnage and dead bodies, whether hung by the neck or show hunched over on their own motorcycles.

What’s most interesting about this clip is the connections it has to Sons of Anarchy. After the Season 2 finale, you’d think the crew would be centerstage. However, the focus is instead on the internal strife between the various Mayans chapters.

Still, there is something that will certainly get fans talking. The one Sons of Anarchy character seen in the trailer is Montez (Jacob Vargas), who joined the club late in the original series. In his scene, he offers a simple warning: “One wrong move could start a war. That’s immediately followed by what looks to be his execution via a plastic bag over the head by a Mayan.

While the fight within the ranks of the Mayans MC may be the primary story this season, that one scene makes it clear that relations between the club and the Sons of Anarchy aren’t going to get better anytime soon.

Mayans MC Season 3 premiered on FX on March 16.

Rainbow Six Siege Y6S1 Crimson Heist Update Is Live On PC Test Server

The update for Year 6, Season 1: Crimson Heist is live on the PC test server for Rainbow Six: Siege. Crimson Heist adds Flores as a brand-new attack operator, and implements several quality of life and balancing changes.

Depending on where you play, you’ll have very different download sizes. On Steam, the update is 6GB, while the update is 19GB on Uplay. In terms of content, most of the update is filled with bug fixes, as seen in the full patch notes.

In terms of balancing, the update addresses Nøkk’s utility against entrenched defenders. Now, when Nøkk’s unique gadget, the HEL Presence Reduction, is active, Nøkk will no longer trip any defender gadgets that are proximity-based. This means that Nøkk is now a direct counter to Ela’s Grzmot Mine, Melusi’s Banshee, and Kapkan’s Entry Denial Device, as well as secondary gadgets and environmental sensors like proximity alarm and metal detectors.

To explain this change, in the Year 6, Season 1 designer’s notes, Ubisoft writes, “Nøkk was initially designed as a counter-intel Operator, but not every intel tool is a camera. Devices triggered by proximity give very useful information as the activation’s sound cue provides information without requiring players to lower their weapon.”

The rest of the changes are listed in the patch notes, which are outlined below.

Rainbow Six Siege Y6S1 Update Patch Notes

Operator Balancing

  • NØKK (Test Server Only)
  • While Nøkk’s HEL Presence Reduction is active, Nøkk won’t activate proximity-based gadgets.
  • Gadgets affected: Ela’s Grzmot Mine, Melusi’s Banshee, Kapkan’s Entry Denial Device, Proximity Alarms, and metal detectors.
  • Nøkk’s glitch effect will cancel the proximity immunity, resulting in the activation of any gadget in range.
  • The color of the HEL device on Nøkk’s hand will change colour when bypassing any proximity device.

Tweaks And Improvements

  • Game Balancing
    • Improvement Lab
      • Defender electricity will no longer destroy ally devices (Test Server Only). This does not affect Custom Games or Situations. We are aware this is a substantial design change, so it will be released on the Test Server to gather feedback from players and the feature will be deactivated when the build goes live.
      • There are new playlist settings for Custom Games. The Preparation Phase Timer can now be set to 0, which allows teams to skip the Preparation Phase, and the Action Phase Timer can now be set to 1800 (30 mins).
      • The damage zone for reinforcements is now reduced to avoid having them overlap and destroy nearby gadgets.

Hold The Hype: Fantastic Four Has No Writer, No Script Just Yet

The potential future for the Marvel Cinematic Universe experienced a Big Bang-level of expansion when Disney acquired the library and licenses of 20th Century Fox in 2019. The move brought many of Marvel’s wayward children back into the fold, including the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Marvel has a host of announced movies in preparation, but news slipped out over the weekend that a well-known actress was heading to Australia to “film the latest Fantastic Four film.” But hold onto your cosmic-ray-proof space suits, because that isn’t quite true according to Deadline reporter Justin Kroll.

In a tweet, Kroll says Marvel Studios is in the earliest stages of planning a Fantastic Four film. The studio is still meeting with writers and doesn’t even have a potential script just yet, let alone a cast to work with.

That rumor comes as a result of a story from the Australian paper the Daily Telegraph, which published a story (paywall ahead) stating that Marvel plans to move its entire operation to Australia for the foreseeable future, and noted that actress Jennifer Lawrence (X-Men, Hunger Games) was heading there to begin filming Fantastic Four, with Jon Watts directing. There’s a grain of truth here, in that Marvel Studios filmed Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings and is currently filming Thor: Love and Thunder in Australia.

But even if Lawrence is indeed cast in the film, the timing just doesn’t line up. Marvel Studios already has the completed Black Widow waiting for release, and The Eternals and Shang-Chi have finished filming. Meanwhile, Thor: Love and Thunder, the untitled Spider-Man 3, and the Sam Raimi-helmed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are already filming. Captain Marvel 2, Black Panther 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are all in pre-production. While we’ve seen sort-of hints of the X-Men joining the MCU in WandaVision (beware spoilers!), there are so many films waiting in the wings that it seems unlikely Marvel Studios would already have gotten a Fantastic Four film planned and ready to go, let alone to start principal photography on. That’s not to mention that Jon Watts is still actively working on Spider-Man 3, last we heard. In the meantime, make sure to keep an eye on our tracker for every announced Marvel film.
