Lord Of The Rings Star Elijah Wood Shares His Scary 9/11 Story

As part of Empire Magazine’s joint interview between Elijah Wood and Daniel Radcliffe to celebrate the 20th anniversaries of the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter franchises, the Lord of the Rings actor shared a frightening story about the 9/11 terrorist attack.

Wood shared that he was doing press in New York City for The Fellowship of the Ring in September 2001 the day of the attack. Together with his co-stars Orlando Bloom and Sean Bean, he flew out of Newark Airport in New Jersey–right across the Hudson River from New York– and they were in the air as the planes hit the World Trade Center tower.

“The planes hit the buildings while we were in the air,” Wood said. “We looked out the window and could see that one of the buildings was on fire. Then there was an announcement from the pilot that planes had been taken over by terrorists and that the FAA had asked all planes to land. We landed in Cincinnati, where I stayed for about a week, before we could take a flight again. So yeah, I directly experienced it. It was super-surreal and scary.”

The question about 9/11 actually came from Radcliffe, who asked Wood in the interview if the terrorist attack impacted the press for The Fellowship of the Ring. Radcliffe himself said of the event, “As kids, we didn’t really know what was going on. But I remember they flew us everywhere on a private jet and we were like, ‘Whoa! We get to go on a private jet!'”

Wood remarked that he doesn’t often think about 9/11 as it pertains to the release of The Fellowship of the Ring or Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. But he acknowledged that the event and the release of the movies are “linked because that was what was happening in the world.”

Both The Fellowship of the Ring and The Sorcerer’s Stone released during Holiday 2001, just a few months after the 9/11 attacks.

Animal Crossing Manga, Hideo Kojima Book Coming This Fall From Viz Media

Some new video game-themed manga is on the way to the West, courtesy of Viz Media. The company has announced that an Animal Crossing: New Horizons manga will release this fall, as will a new book of essays from Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Vol. 1 Deserted Island Diary, due out on September 14, is Nintendo’s first official book on its popular game of the same name. The book is a Toy Story-like manga that will answer the question: “What do the villagers of Animal Crossing: New Horizons get up to when you’re not around?” Viz teases “goofy gags and silly stories” from the manga, which is part of an ongoing series. Also included are comics on “each” villager, though it’s unclear if that includes every single one included in the game.

The book will also offer “tips and tricks for playing the game in a special bonus section.” New Horizons has proven to be wildly popular, selling more than 31 million copies in less than a year, making it the second-best-selling game on Nintendo Switch.

The Creative Gene: How Books, Movies, and Music Inspired The Creator of Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid–yes, that’s the full title–will be published on October 12. While much of the book’s focus is right there in the title, the publisher further elaborates that the book will be a collection of essays that “explore some of the inspirations behind one of the titans of the video game industry, and offers an exclusive insight into one of the brightest minds of pop culture.”

What makes The Creative Gene truly special is its essays come directly from Kojima himself, and will offer his “opinions and reviews of significant films, books, and music in his own words.” The book will also feature a special conversation with popular Japanese musician Gen Hoshino, whose hit song “Pop Virus” is featured in the unique 2019 game Death Stranding. In the meantime, the recently announced official novelizations of Death Stranding will be released February 23 on Amazon.

Viz Media also recently announced a collaboration with Ubisoft to deliver a new manga titled Assassin’s Creed: Blade of the Shao Jun. That book, which was recently released, extends the story of Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China.

WWE’s Bo Dallas Still Missing From TV, Reportedly Getting In To Real Estate

“Creative has nothing for you” isn’t just a Highspots Wrestling Network comedy series, it’s also what wrestler Bo Dallas has been hearing from WWE writers for more than a year. The former NXT and 24/7 Champion hasn’t been seen on WWE programming since 2019’s Crown Jewel show, as he prepares for life after wrestling working in real estate.

Recently, Dave Meltzer spoke about the situation on Wrestling Observer Radio. “You know how they say creative has nothing for him,’ Meltzer said (via WrestleTalk). “In his case, that’s actually true. Usually when people say that, it’s something else. I don’t know why he’s never been cut, they never use him. But, they didn’t cut him, and they cut all of those guys that they cut in April. He’s still there, still got a job. No idea what or why or anything. Big mystery.”

Additionally, Meltzer reported that Dallas and fellow WWE wrestler Liv Morgan live on a farm together and have been studying and starting a family real estate business. However, he’s still reportedly getting paid by WWE.

In April 2020, WWE had what is referred to as Black Wednesday, a day that saw the release of more than 20 wrestlers–many of which ended up in AEW and Impact. At that time, Dallas was partnered with Curtis Axel, and Axel was one of the stars who lost his job.

Dallas last wrestled at Crown Jewel in October 2019, teaming with Curtis Axel against New Day members Big E and Kofi Kingston. This came after a long string of losses stemming back to March of that year. Six months prior to the start of the losing streak, the duo were the Raw Tag Team Champions.

For more on Bo Dallas, check out the February 11 episode of GameSpot’s wrestling podcast Wrestle Buddies, where Mat Elfring and Chris E. Hayner talk about one of their favorite Bo Dallas moments: When he showed up to NXT after being kicked out as masked wrestler Mr. NXT and then got chased off by security.

Amazon Brings On Disney Veteran To Work On The Lord Of The Rings TV Show

Amazon Studios has announced a new hire who will help lead the charge for the marketing and promotion of the network’s big-budget Lord of the Rings TV show and its other projects.

The company has hired Greg Coleman to become the new global head of franchise marketing, with a start date of March 1, according to Deadline. He will report to Amazon Studios chief marketing office of Prime Video, Ukonwa Ojo.

Coleman, who came to Amazon after a successful run at Disney where he helped launch the Frozen franchise, will take the lead on creating marketing campaigns for Amazon Studio’s sci-fi and fantasy TV movies and TV shows, including Lord of the Rings.

Given that Amazon is reportedly spending over $1 billion to produce the Lord of the Rings TV show, it’s expected that it will have a significant marketing push. However, the specifics of Coleman’s plans to promote and hype the fantasy show are not yet available–he doesn’t start until March 1, after all.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who is stepping down from his role but will remain a central decision-maker for Amazon going forward, was said to have personally spearheaded the deal to acquire the Lord of the Rings TV rights and is a big fan of fantasy himself.

We still haven’t seen a trailer or gotten a release date for Amazon’s Lord of the Rings show, but you can check out GameSpot’s roundup of all the key Lord of the Rings TV show details so far to get up to speed with what we know about the ambitious TV series.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League Will Get Worldwide Release On March 18

Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be released worldwide on Thursday, March 18. HBO has confirmed that the DC movie will be available internationally on a variety on platforms as well as on HBO Max in the US.

The company is yet to specify which distribution options will be available in each territory but did release a list of the intended platforms, which include premium video on demand, subscription video on demand, HBO linear, and HBO Go. The only countries that aren’t covered by this are China, France, and Japan, where a release date for the movie hasn’t been announced yet.

The announcement that Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be released worldwide on the same day that it hits HBO Max follows criticism by Snyder of HBO’s release plans. In a recent interview with the SnyderCutBR YouTube channel, he said, “there has been not amazing work done with the distribution of the movie. I don’t know why that is, I honestly couldn’t put my finger on it.”

The movie is Snyder’s four hour reworking of the 2017 DC superhero team-up. Snyder was the original director, but left the movie during production and was replaced by Joss Whedon. The theatrical version of the movie was met with negative reviews and disappointing box office, and fever since fans had campaigned for Snyder’s original vision for the film to be released.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, and Ezra Miller. Check out the most recent trailer, as well as GameSpot’s guide to every upcoming DC movie we know about so far.

Street Fighter Coming To Fortnite In New Crossover

The crossover frenzy that has been this season of Fortnite appears to be continuing with another legendary gaming franchise. Capcom’s Street Fighter will reportedly be the next to join the game, as shown in leaked images of the latest dimension-breaking portal.

On Twitter, Fortnite leaker ShiinaBR shared images they obtained that show off what appears inside the next portal. The previous one showed Tron imagery prior to an official announcement, and this one looks like Suzaka Castle. If the level sounds familiar, it may be because in addition to several Street Fighter games, it’s also Ryu’s signature state in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

We were able to verify this ourselves by visiting an area southwest of Sweaty Sands. You have to be standing in the correct spot for the portal to open.

ShiinaBR claims there will be both a male and female character from the series added as hunters in Fortnite. Ryu is the obvious choice for male characters because of the Suzaka Castle imagery and his role as the poster boy for the series. For a female character, there options are more open. It could be Chun-Li or Cammy, as they’ve both been mainstays in the series for decades. Capcom could also take the opportunity to creatively announce a new fighter via Fortnite.

Fortnite has already featured guest appearances from franchises like Star Wars, Tron, Predator, Halo, God of War, and GI Joe during this season, with some including missions while others are limited to skins and other cosmetic items. This week also brought with it new challenges, including using a harpoon gun on three opponents, dealing damage immediately after gliding, and destroying inflatable tubeman llamas near gas stations.

Valheim, The Latest Gaming Sensation, Reaches 3 Million Copies Sold

The Norse-inspired PC multiplayer game Valheim has crossed another major sales milestone. Just days after achieving 2 million in sales in under two weeks, the PC game is now up to 3 million copies sold.

Developer Iron Gate announced the news in a post on Steam. The game is growing fast, as the company announced the 2 million sales milestone just a few days ago.

The five-person studio also celebrated how Valheim now has more than 60,000 reviews on Steam that are classified as “overwhelmingly positive,” helping boost the game into Steam’s top 250 best-reviewed games of all time (it sits at 78th now).

Iron Gate also boasted that Valheim has achieved more than 20 million hours of viewing, which speaks to the the popularity of the game on Twitch and other video streaming sites.

In terms of daily players, Steam’s own public data page shows that Valheim had more than 390,550 concurrent players on February 18, which put it into the top five most-played games on Steam.

Iron Gate CEO Richard Svensson said in a statement that he always imagined that Valheim’s early access launch would be “somewhat successful,” so the studio isn’t changing plans as the result of the big sales numbers. However, Svensson remarked that Iron Gate now has enough money buy a bigger office space if it chooses to.

Svensson also said he has enjoyed seeing the community creations surrounding Valheim.

“I really love when fans make paintings, music and other creative works inspired by Valheim. I guess I like to inspire people to create stuff”

Valheim is published by Goat Simulator developer Coffee Stain’s publishing division. The head of Coffee Stain’s publishing arm, Albert Säfström, said about the new sales milestone, “THREE MILLION?!! Already?”

He added: “This level of success is uncharted territory for Coffee Stain.”

Säfström pointed out that it’s a good thing that Coffee Stain hired former Minecraft business manager Daniel Kaplan, because his expertise will help Coffee Stain sustain and support Valheim in the future. “We’re excited to be on this journey together,” Säfström said.

These include the tips you need to build, repair, improve your skills, and acquire more resources. Daisy Ridley Reflects On Star Wars Career, Says She Would Come Back

Daisy Ridley played Rey in the new Star Wars trilogy, but the character’s arc has come to a close and the new Star Wars films will move on without her. But in the future, would Ridley be open to revisiting the character some day or re-joining the Star Wars universe in another way? She responded to this in the April 2021 issue of Empire, leaving the door open for it to happen.

While Rey is probably finished “for now,” she reflected, Ridley has a “never say never” attitude toward the future. Ridley said she was floored to see Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian, and she could potentially see Rey coming back in the future as well in some capacity.

“I mean, never say never,” she said.

Ridley said she watched all the Harry Potter movies again over Christmas and then saw Ron Weasley actor Rupert Grint comment that he would be open to playing Ron again. Ridley said she feels similarly about Rey.

“I’m always open to a revisit,” she said of Star Wars. “But also the beautiful thing is it’s this wonderful, huge universe with all of these stories that have yet to be told. I think there’s a lot of cool things to be made before any potential revisit.”

Speaking more generally about her time making Star Wars films, Ridley said she had a wonderful time making them, even if she’s saying goodbye to Rey for now.

“I don’t think it’ll ever feel properly like goodbye because it’s such a wonderful little web of people. It’s a really nice club to be a part of. Plus, I had such a good time. I loved my experience. In terms of revisiting the character, I think that’s a bye-bye for now,” she said.

Ridley says she remains in touch with the other stars of the newer Star Wars films–including John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and director JJ Abrams. When they caught up most recently, they talked about the TV show Drag Race, Ridley said.

Ridley’s response is different from Isaac and Boyega. Isaac has said he will only come back to Star Wars for the money, while Boyega has said he has no interest in playing Finn again.

Ridley’s next movie is Chaos Walking from director Doug Liman and co-starring Spider-Man’s Tom Holland. It debuts on March 5.

Despite starring in giant blockbusters, Ridley said she is open to joining the cast for any movie with a good enough script. “I’m sort of open to whatever cool stuff comes my way. I mean, being an actor is f**king great,” she said.

ColourPop’s Baby Yoda-Inspired Palette Restocks Today

Last year, cosmetics company ColourPop released an official eyeshadow palette inspired by The Mandalorian’s adorable star, Baby Yoda. It launched alongside the debut of The Mandalorian Season 2, but it sold out long before holiday shopping season really got into full swing. If you missed out on picking up the palette the first time around, you’re in luck. ColourPop is restocking The Child Shadow Palette today, February 19, on its site around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET.

It comes in a small case featuring a picture of Baby Yoda on the front. The foldout palette also has a small mirror with the slogan “Cutest in the Galaxy” written next to the little guy.

All of ColourPop’s pop culture-inspired collections tend to go out of stock soon after they are made available. Earlier this year, ColourPop released an official Animal Crossing: New Horizons collection filled with eyeshadow palettes, lip tints, and blushes. Given the popularity of Animal Crossing, it’s no surprise that the entire collection sold out. Before that, ColourPop had a Sailer Moon collection that sold out extremely quickly as well.
