Daily Deals: The First GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming PCs Are Up for Sale, Including Alienware

There is a lot going today. The new NVIDIA GeForce 30 series video cards are available starting this morning. The best deal of the bunch is the RTX 3080, which offers more power than the RTX 2080 Ti at almost half the price. The problem is, almost every single video card sold out instantly. Fortunately, pre-configured gaming PCs equipped with these new video cards are still available. PS5 preorders also kicked off late last night. Plenty have already been sold, but I’m pretty confident that more preorder opportunities will be available today.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin Announced

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin has been announced for Nintendo Switch by Capcom as part of today’s Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase.

The cel-shaded story-led RPG releases Summer 2021, and casts you as a monster rider rather than a hunter. As the descendant of a legendary monster rider known as Red, your story will start with the investigation of mass disappearance of Rathalos from their natural habitats.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/17/monster-hunter-stories-2-announcement-trailer”]

It’s promised that you’ll be able to ride and forge bonds with a variety of well-known Monster Hunter beasts. From the trailer, we know that the Rathalos and Anjanath will be among them.

In addition to Wings of Ruin being a story-led RPG in the Monster Hunter universe, Capcom has also said that there will be ‘compatability’ with the upcoming Monster Hunter Rise on Switch. It’s not yet clear what that connectivity will be.

The previous game in the series was well received by us; our Monster Hunter Stories review praised the 3DS game as being a spin-off that does the series proud. It did away with the RPG grind and used a novel turn-based battle system for a true JRPG experience.

Monster Hunter Rise Announced for Nintendo Switch, Coming Next March

Capcom has announced Monster Hunter Rise for Nintendo Switch. It will arrive on March 26, 2021.

The game resembles a traditional Monster Hunter, but with far more freedom of movement, and the Rise title is meant to communicate the idea of verticality, which will be a major part of the game. Players will be able to use new Wirebugs, which act as a grappling hook. The Wirebug can be used in combat too, to allow for more versatile, fast-paced combat.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/17/monster-hunter-rise-official-announcement-trailer”]

Areas in the game will be seamless, open locations, as in Monster Hunter World. Your base will be Kamura Village, which will be filled with characters to meet, who will form the basis of the story.

Rise also includes a new dog-like companion character called a Palamute, that can be ridden through the environments, and will aid you in combat. Palicos also return and act as support characters. In single player, players can bring two companions (in any combination of Palamutes and Palicos), and in multiplayer players bring one.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=monster-hunter-rise-screenshots&captions=true”]

Monster Hunter Rise features a number of new monsters, including fire-breathing bird Aknosom, inflating amphibian Tetranadon, the wolf-like bird wyvern Great Izuchi, and what seems to be the game’s headline monster, the Chinese dragon-like Magnamalo. Arzuros will also return from previous games, with many more returing and new monsters to be announced. As in Monster Hunter World, monsters can encounter and fight each other without the player’s input.

The game will come in standard and deluxe editions. The deluxe edition features the base game and a bundle of DLC including armour, gestures, and cosmetics. Pre-order bonuses will be offered, adding some (tremendously cute) layered armour sets for Palamutes and Palicos, as well as a talisman item to help novices in the early game. Pre-orders for the download version of the game will open today. Three new Amiibo will also be released, of Palamute, Palico and Magnamalo.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=monster-hunter-rise-amiibo-packshot-editions-and-preorder-bonuses&captions=true”]

The game appears to feature more English language voice acting than previous installments in the series. It’s just one of two new Monster Hunter games announced today, along with Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin – both games will be compatible with one another in some form, although Capcom hasn’t yet said exactly how.

Technically, we had two Nintendo Directs today – you can check out everything announced and shown in them right now.

Madden 21 Patch Notes (September 16): Here’s All The Changes

The latest patch for Madden NFL 21 has arrived, and it addresses a number of relatively small issues with the game and one big one. Starting with the big one, the September 16 patch fixes an issue that could prevent the PC edition from launching at all.

The update, which is out now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, also addressed multiple issues with passing and fake kick run plays in the MUT Squads mode. It also fixes a general gameplay bug that stopped players from passing the ball after a handoff in a a run-pass-option play.

You can see the full patch notes below, as posted by EA on the Madden forums.

Madden NFL 21 has proven to be a big sales success so far, becoming the No. 1 overall best-selling game in the US for August 2020. In fact, this was the 21st year in a row that a Madden NFL game has been the best-seller in its release month.

Madden NFL 21 is coming to the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S, and people can get a free upgrade to the next-gen edition via EA’s Dual Entitlement program.

Madden NFL 21 September 16 Patch Notes:

  • MUT Squads: Addressed an issue when MUT Squad Roles are not being respected properly when performing certain pass plays
  • MUT Squads: Addressed an issue when on Fake Kick run plays the MUT Squad Roles were not being respected properly
  • Addressed an issue when two users on offense cannot pass the ball after a handoff on RPO Peeks and Reads
  • Addressed additional visual issues with player uniforms
  • Addressed an issue where Origin PC players would receive an error message and were unable to boot Madden NFL 21

Medal Of Honor: Above And Beyond Sets A Release Date For December

Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, the first new game in the series since 2012’s Medal of Honor: Warfighter, has a release date. The VR title from Respawn (Titanfall 2, Apex Legends) will release on December 11 through the Oculus Store and Steam.

The game, which features both a single-player campaign and multiplayer modes, will feature stories from WWII veterans and survivors about their experiences, which will also influence the game’s levels. The whole game will be set during the second World War, marking a return after the PS3/Xbox 360 reboot transplanted the series into the modern day.

Work on the game began four years ago, and involved a lot of travel to research the areas depicted in the game, as well as interviews with veterans. The game is touted as featuring a “movie’s worth of narrative performance” in a press release sent to GameSpot, with 120 pages of scripted narrative captured.

Not much has been revealed about the game’s multiplayer as of yet, but EA has promised that more details will come to light closer to release.

For now, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is a PC exclusive, with no PSVR version announced. You can see more of the game in the video above.

PS5 Preorder Fiasco: Internet Reacts, Microsoft Responds To All The Issues

It’s been a very big day for the PlayStation 5, as we finally know the price, release date, and launch lineup for Sony’s next-generation console. While people are excited by Sony’s various announcements, the situation surrounding pre-orders has been something of a fiasco.

Sony confirmed the PS5 launch date and price during its reveal event, but a bigger surprise was that pre-orders were available … immediately. This led to a global race to secure the PS5 before retailers ran out of stock–and they did. It’s not a surprise that the system was a hot commodity but the issue for many was that Sony gave no warning about pre-orders.

Actually, they did, but the message was not consistent. Worldwide marketing boss Eric Lempel said back in July (via IGN) that Sony would be forthcoming and transparent about the pre-order details for the PS5 so people could plan and prepare. But that didn’t happen. Here’s Lempel in July: “I think it’s safe to say…we’ll let you know when preorder will happen. It’s not going to happen with a minute’s notice. We’re going to at some point let you know when you can preorder PlayStation 5,” he told Geoff Keighley. So, please, don’t feel like you have to go run out and line up anywhere until you receive official notice on how that will work.”

That plan seemingly went out the window, as various retailers around the world began accepting pre-orders immediately after the event. With no advance notice given to consumers, many were locked out of securing a console.

Shannon Grixti, a writer for the Australian website Press-Start, reported that local retailer EB Games had 75,000 PS5 units for pre-order at launch, and they sold out in about an hour. The retailer’s entire 2020 allocation has been sold through, Grixti said.

Also frustrating some people is that Sony opened up a PS5 website in August where users could put their email address down to be one of the first to pre-order a PS5. However, these pre-orders don’t start until Friday, and there is no guarantee that you will be chosen.

People expressed their disappointment on Twitter, and Microsoft jumped on board to throw some shade at Sony, too. Microsoft told people weeks ago that Xbox Series X/S pre-orders would begin on September 22, and all that’s left to announce is the precise time. That information will be announced “soon,” Microsoft said in its social media post.

Microsoft’s tweet also points out that the Xbox Series X/S will have a “worldwide” launch across 36 countries on November 10. For comparison, the PS5 will launch on November 12 in seven markets: the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. A week later, starting on November 19, Sony will launch the PS5 in Europe, the Middle East, South America, Asia, and South Africa.

Whether or not the blame is on Sony or retailers for the PS5 pre-order problems doesn’t really matter–the end result is that a lot of people who wanted to pre-order the PS5 were not able to, or had a bad experience doing so, and that’s a bummer.

There were plenty of reports about people successfully ordering a PS5 but then getting stuck on the checkout page. Others reported that their banks contacted them to ask about fraudulent banking activity due to the suspicious-looking credit card activity. None of this is what you might call a positive consumer experience. It’s also worth noting that Microsoft may well run into similar issues when Xbox Series X/S pre-orders open, but the company has at least advised people on when pre-orders will begin so they can prepare.

Star Wars: Rogue One writer Gary Whitta reacted to the PS5 pre-order situation on social media, writing, “No matter what, I think we can all agree that today’s pre-order rollout was handled terribly. An absolute sh** show.”

PS5 Backwards Compatibility: 99% Of PS4 Games Will Be Playable, Sony Boss Says

The next-gen floodgates have opened, and we now finally know the price and release date of the PlayStation 5. The system will launch on November 12, but the launch line-up isn’t huge. However, you’ll be able to play various PlayStation 4 games on the system from launch, and it sounds like backwards compatibility will run deeper than we initially thought.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan said that backwards compatibility has been tested with “thousands” of games, and that most of them work. In fact, the figure he gives is “99 percent,” meaning that it will be rare for a PS4 game to not work on Sony’s new console.

Sony initially confirmed that the PS5 will be able to run most of the “top 100” PS4 games, but later said that the system will support an “overwhelming majority” of PS4 games. 99% is certainly an overwhelming majority.

Unfortunately, there’s still not indication that the PS5 will run games from the PS3, PS2, or PS1.

Ryan also told The Washington Post that he expects the PS4’s life span to continue for another “three or four years,” and that the system will continue to be supported. “Many will transition to PS5, we hope if we do our job well, but tens of millions will still be engaged with the PS4,” Ryan said.

Sony has also announced the PS Plus exclusive Plus Collection, which gives subscribers on PS5 access to a back catalog of some of the PS4’s best games, including Bloodborne, God of War, Uncharted 4, and more.
