The Dumbest Moments from the Fast & Furious Movies

Fast & Furious 9 has been pushed back to April 2021. That’s a long wait to find out what’s next for Dom’s family, and to finally learn how Han survived Deckard Shaw’s assassination attempt. It’s also a long time to wait to see the next evolution of the franchise’s trademark outlandish set pieces… set pieces which will surely reach new (ahem) heights when the Fast franchise goes to outer space, which is sounding more and more likely lately.

This series began in relatively straightforward fashion with a simple Point Break style plot in The Fast & the Furious. There was some impressive stunt driving and a few grappling guns but otherwise the proceedings were mostly plausible. From there, however, every successive entry upped the ante, adding ever more improbable tech, stunts and plot twists. Just a few examples include Owen Shaw’s ridiculous flip car, Brian running up the side of a falling bus, and Letty’s soap opera amnesia.

At this point the gang that started as simple thieves and street racers has now engaged in high-speed battles with helicopters, a tank, a drone, a submarine and a cyborg. They’ve stolen hundreds of millions of dollars, become folk heroes wherever they went and been on both sides of covert government operations. One might say it’s been a wild ride. And again, outer space might be next.

To tide you over until the next installment drops in 2021, we’ve put together a gallery of the most ridiculous stunts, silliest plot threads, and inexplicable character choices from all nine movies so far, including the latest spinoff, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. We’ll just ignore Fast & Furious Crossroads

Massive spoilers for all Fast & Furious movies…

Xbox Series S Won’t Run Xbox One X Enhanced Versions of Past-Gen Games

Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox Series S will not run Xbox One X Enhanced versions of backwards compatible games, and will instead run the Xbox One S versions of Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles with other beneficial features.

As reported by VGC, while the Xbox Series S won’t run the Xbox One X Enhanced versions of Xbox One and Xbox 360 games, it will still be a step above the Xbox One S with “improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent framr rates, faster load times, and Auto HDR.”

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/08/xbox-series-s-world-premiere-reveal-trailer”]

“Xbox Series S was designed to be the most affordable next generation console and play next generation games at 1440P at 60fps,” A Microsoft spokesperson said. “To deliver the highest quality backwards compatible experience consistent with the developer’s original intent, the Xbox Series S runs the Xbox One S version of backward compatible games while applying improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent frame rates, faster load times and Auto HDR.”

When a game has been Xbox One X Enhanced, it means the developer has made improvements to a standard Xbox One game, including higher resolutions, faster framerates and/or improved textures.

This all shouldn’t be too surprising, as the Xbox One X can run games up to 4K, while the Xbox Series S can run games at 1440p at up to 120 FPS. However, the Xbox Series S does support 4K upscaling for games.

Additionally, as first reported by Digital Foundry, the Xbox Series S also has less RAM than the Xbox One X – 10 GB vs 12 GB – but that doesn’t mean there aren’t upsides to this new next-gen system.

“It may be be running backwards compatible games in Xbox One [S] mode, but because the GPU is so much more capable, and knowing what we know about how backwards compatibility works, you should actually still be able to clean up performance issues,” Digital Foundry’s John Linneman said. “So games that maybe struggled on Xbox One S – either the dynamic resolution was overly-aggressive, with slowdown and things like that – conceivably they could actually run noticeably smoother on this machine.”

Furthermore, the Xbox Series S also boasts DirectX Raytracing, 4K streaming media playback, variable rate shading and refresh rate, and much more.

The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will both be released on November 10, 2020, and will cost $499 and $299, respectively. Pre-orders for both consoles begin on September 22, 2020.

The Most Memorable Kids’ WB Original Shows

You may not want to hear this particular tidbit, but this week marks the 25th Anniversary of the Kids’ WB programming block that began on September 9, 1995!

For close to a decade, on The WB (and then briefly on The CW), Kids’ WB dazzled and delighted ’90s youths with a cool array of animation, delivering at least a dozen instant classics that still hold up today. After a few years on the air, Kids’ WB struck gold with an English dub of the anime series Pokémon (and then other anime like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Cardcaptors), but the slate’s bread and butter was still its Warner Bros. originals – ranging from Animaniacs to Tiny Toon Adventures to Batman Beyond.

From DC heroes to modern meta-takes on Loony Tunes and more, we’re celebrating the birth of Kids’ WB with some of its finest original programming. Here are some of the block’s most memorable shows.

Teen Titans

teen-titansBased on the DC superhero team featuring Robin, Starfire, Raven. Cyborg, and Beast Boy, Teen Titans was an acclaimed powerhouse series that debuted on both Kids’ WB and Cartoon Network. Two full seasons aired on Kids’ WB and the series was so popular that, after it ended its four-season run, a fifth season was ordered for Cartoon Network. The show was initially intended for a younger audience but the character progression, superb animation, and deeper themes opened it up to a much wider audience.

Animaniacs

animaniacs-1-2With a Hulu revival on the way (slated to premiere November 20), beloved series Animaniacs, from Warner Bros. Animation and Spielberg’s Amblin Television, featured a variety of different segments and characters, including the Warner siblings Yakko, Wakoo and Dot. The original voice cast included Rob Paulsen, Jess Harnell, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, and Sherri Stoner. The series won eight Daytime Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award, and spawned a spinoff in Pinky and the Brain.

Pinky and the Brain

pinkyandthebrain-1200x720Animianiacs spinoff Pinky and Brain, featuring the voices of Rob Paulsen and Maurice LaMarche, centered on two genetically enhanced laboratory mice inside the Acme Labs research facility. Brain, an arrogant schemer, and Pinky, a sweet goofball, attempted to “take over the world” on multiple occasions, much to the joy of fans and critics alike.

Freakazoid!

Freakazoid_S1_H_DD_KA_TT_3415x1920_300dpi_EN_3b6fa9e9-2Though short-lived, the third collaboration between Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros. Animation, Freakazoid!, would develop a pretty big cult following over the years. As a gentle and clever Shazam! parody, Freakazoid! featured a teenage computer nerd-turned-superhero who, thanks to some cyber-antics, could combat a bizarre world of supervillains. The battle cry of “Freak out!” was used to transform into Freakazoid (while “Freak in!” was used to change back into teen Dexter).

Tiny Toon Adventures

6nZwDwypYYgpDOpvAQdR-2Though Tiny Toon Adventures, the first project from Spielberg and Warner Bros. Animation, had already completed its run by the time Kids’ WB launched, reruns of the award-winning animated series were a morning staple of the Kids’ WB block from ’97-’99. Set in the fictional town of Acme Acres, the show’s characters attended Acme Looniversity, a school whose faculty primarily consists of the mainstays of the classic Warner Bros. cartoons – such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Sylvester the Cat, Wile E. Coyote and Elmer Fudd.

Batman Beyond

imageShowing us a teenage Batman in a futuristic Gotham City under the tutelage of an elderly Bruce Wayne, Batman Beyond was a totally new vision for Batman, with slick futuristic architecture, neon-tinged streets, and a new face behind the cowl. After Bruce — who on the series was a hermit in his 70s living alone in Wayne Manor — crosses paths with the athletic Terry McGinnis, an entirely new Batman was born.

The Batman

the-batman-headerSticking with the Caped Crusader, The Batman, which began in 2004, existed within its own continuity while also borrowing famous storylines from comics, movies, and even previous animated series. It marked the first time DC Animated Universe stalwarts Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Burnett were not handling the animated TV adventures of Bruce Wayne and his alter ego since Batman: The Animated Series. Based on the style of comics artist Jeff Matsuda (a producer, art director, and the chief character designer on the show), The Batman gave fans a younger Batman, one who has been on the job for just a few years and hence has no Robin, no Justice League, and less experience than most previous animated Batmans.

Mucha Lucha

62151250-0-q80The first kids’ animated series created with Adobe Flash, Mucha Lucha was set in Luchaville, a fictional Southern California town centered on lucha libre where nearly everyone in that town wore a mask and costume. Friends Rikochet, Buena Girl, and the Flea attended the Foremost World-Renowned International School of Lucha in hopes of becoming big stars in the ring.

Johnny Test

llJohnny Test was an 11-year-old suburban troublemaker who was frequently used as a guinea pig by his super-genius tween twin sisters, Susan and Mary, for their various experiments and inventions in their laboratory filled with highly advanced technology. Netflix has ordered two seasons of a Johnny Test revival, along with a an hour-long special.

Xiaolin Showdown

xiaolin-showdownSet in a world where martial arts battles and Eastern magic were commonplace, huge hit Xiaolin Showdown followed four young Xiaolin warriors — Omi, Kimiko, Raimundo, and Clay — who were forced into cooperation at the Xiaolin Temple after learning they were chosen to become Xiaolin Dragons. A sequel series, Xiaolin Chronicles, ran for 26 episodes (with the final six episodes running on Netflix in the U.S.).

Superman: The Animated Series

SupermanTheAnimatedSeries_4926700_SUPERMANTAS._V347800313_SX1080_-2The first of several animated follow-ups to the acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, from Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett, paid tribute to both the classic Superman of yesteryear and a newer, more modern Superman. With Tim Daly as Clark, Dana Delany as Lois, and Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor, this Superman series was a huge second step for DC’s animated mega-verse.

The New Batman Adventures

batamanthenewadventuresA sequel to the 1990s Batman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, from Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, expanded the Caped Crusader’s world by giving more stories to supporting heroes like Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl. The Art Deco and film noir imagery from the original series were also replaced with a new animation style.

Jackie Chan Adventures

chanjade-e1492659729980-1280x720Though not a Warner Bros. production (breaking our rule here a little bit), Jackie Chan Adventures, from Sony, aired on Kids’ WB and featured a fictionalized version of Jackie Chan (as an Indiana Jones-style archeologist) in adventures that would contain references to Chan’s actual works. Chan did not voice his animated character but he did appear in live-action inserts at the end of each episode.

AGDQ 2021 Will Be Online-Only Due To Pandemic Concerns

Despite the event not taking place until January 2021, Games Done Quick has opted to schedule AGDQ 2021 as an online-only event because of the ongoing pandemic.

“Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of the community, Games Done Quick has made the difficult decision to move AGDQ 2021 to an entirely online format and will not feature a live venue,” organizers said on the speedrunning event’s website. “Similar to SGDQ 2020, we will broadcast the event from our studio, with runners participating from the safety of their homes.

The dates won’t be changed from when they were scheduled previously. It will be held from January 3 through January 10, and game submissions will run from September 24 until October 4. The full schedule is expected to be announced on November 9.

Despite lacking the in-person energy and crowds of past events, Summer Games Done Quick still managed to be a huge success. The event from last month raised more than $2.3 million for Doctors Without Borders, and it included some truly creative speedruns. With more time to plan for the online structure of AGDQ 2021, it will likely be even more impressive.

PS5 Showcase Event Coming September 16

Sony has announced a new PlayStation 5 showcase scheduled for Wednesday, September 16 at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET. The event will focus on the console’s upcoming games. It will include a look at games coming at launch as well as those available in the future. If you haven’t made up your mind on purchasing the PS5 yet, this could be your chance.

The event will be shown on both Twitch and YouTube, and will last about 40 minutes. It’s games-focused rather than hardware-focused, and will feature updates on first-party and third-party games. We know that Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart are both scheduled to release near the system’s launch. Neither has a firm release date. Other games, such as the Demon’s Souls remake, don’t have release windows yet. There also isn’t an official date for the PS5 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, but it releases three days after Microsoft’s systems. Having that available as a launch title for the PS5 would certainly be a big deal.

Sony has still not revealed the release date or price for the PS5, but it may have no choice now that Microsoft has revealed the Xbox Series X/S is set to release on November 10. While the Series X will cost $500, the less-powerful Series S will cost $300. This strategy is different from Sony’s, where the only difference between the PS5 and PS5 Digital systems is a disc drive. The price difference between the two PS5 systems is unlikely to be nearly as large. The internal specs are very similar to the Xbox Series X. That could mean parity between the two this November.

Control Deluxe Edition Players Get Ultimate Edition Upgrade, Then Have It Removed

Last month, Control publisher 505 Games confirmed that the game’s Ultimate Edition version, which bundles the original title with two expansions, will be the only way to get a free upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions without re-purchasing the game. At the time, 505 said this was an option it chose because it couldn’t bring all current-gen players to next-gen platforms and framed it as avoiding “leaving any one group out.” That’s what makes the latest development in the story so confusing.

Users on the gaming forum ResetEra reported that despite owning the Deluxe Edition of the game, which is not the same as the Ultimate Edition, they found they had been upgraded to it anyway. A short time later, this was revoked, and they were reverted back to the previous version of the game.

505 Games’ decision to not offer any sort of upgrade path for most Control players was controversial because it wasn’t just the base game that would need to be transferred. It has received two substantial expansions, and with performance issues on current-gen systems sometimes affecting framerate, it’s expected that the next-gen experience will be superior.

Several other game publishers have announced either discounted or completely free game upgrades to next-gen platforms. Ubisoft is doing this with nearly all its upcoming games, including Watch Dogs Legion and Far Cry 6, and despite releasing in 2015, The Witcher 3 will get a free upgrade, as well. Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is priced at $70 on Xbox Series X/S and PS5, but this package also includes access to the last-gen version, effectively making the upgrade cost $10.

Borderlands 3 Coming To PS5 And Xbox Series X, Future Content Detailed During PAX Online

During its PAX Online Digital Showcase, Gearbox detailed the new features coming to Borderlands 3, including confirmation that it will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/Series X with cross-progression and cross-save support. No release date has been provided.

Gearbox announced that Borderlands 3 players on either PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will receive a free next-gen upgrade for their respective console. Additionally, Borderlands 3 on next gen will let you carry over the content you’ve purchased and the progress you’ve made from the current generation. It’s unclear whether this upgrade path is relegated to those with the digital or physical edition of the game.

Borderlands 3 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will run at 4K and 60 frames per second, the studio confirmed. Further, two highly requested features–four-player local co-op and vertical split-screen–will be available to all players for free. Vertical split-screen will also be added to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of the game via a free patch, though Gearbox didn’t clarify when this will drop. Similarly, Gearbox didn’t specify whether four-player local co-op will be added to current-gen systems.

Elsewhere, Gearbox said Borderlands 3 will receive new add-on content later this year. It won’t be on the same scale as the DLC featured in the game’s season pass. However, the upcoming DLC will include new action skills and an additional skill tree for each Vault Hunter.

For example, FL4K’s new skill tree, Trapper, emphasizes shields and survivability for them and their pet. The Trapper skill tree includes the new action skill Gravity Snare, a crowd-controlling ability that sends out a trap and launches enemies into the air before slamming them back to the ground. FL4K also gets a new pet option, a Hyperion Loaderbot, which has additional crowd-control capabilities.

In other Borderlands 3 news, the game’s fourth DLC, Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck, launched on September 10. It’s the final DLC in Borderlands 3’s season pass and increases the level cap again.
