Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher to Join Rainbow Six Siege as an Operator Named Specialist Zero

Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher will be the next operator to join Rainbow Six Siege, and he will arrive with the Operation Shadow Legacy update as Specialist Zero.

While his possible addition was leaked a few months ago, Sam Fisher was officially revealed in a teaser trailer, and even though he wasn’t wearing his iconic night vision goggles, those three dots did appear on his gun with the classic sound.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/11/rainbow-six-siege-splinter-cells-sam-fisher-reveal-trailer-operation-shadow-legacy”]

Additionally, night vision activates part-way through the trailer, all while Fisher says, “You should know better than to write me off. Consider this a teaching moment.”

Ubisoft also released a key art of Sam Fisher, which you can see below, and it looks like those three dots may also be part of a device that can burrow through walls to provide a glimpse of what is on the other side.

We have yet to see Specialist Zero in action, but the end of the trailer promises his full reveal will take place on Sunday, August 16, at 11am PT/2pm ET/7pm BST.

On Fisher’s official page on Rainbow Six Siege’s website, Lera “Fink” Melnikova pens a letter, giving background for Zero’s arrival;

“He seems to have kept in good shape despite being off active duty, though he also seemed a little more frazzled than usual when he arrived. I wonder what has Zero using Rainbow as his home base, he wouldn’t be here without his own motivations and we should take advantage of his experience. His military expertise will be a good balance to your psychological insight. As he’s coming in as the first member of the Rainbow Operational Staff (ROS), I’m curious and cautious of the changes he’ll bring to our organization. I’m sure his instruction will be a necessary, and painful, experience. I imagine there’s something he’s not telling me regarding his sudden appearance, but that’s not surprising. Zero operates on a need to know basis, I’m sure he’ll tell me when he thinks I need to know.”

While we haven’t gotten a proper Splinter Cell game since 2013’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Fisher has appeared in other games like Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

Clearly, Ubisoft hasn’t forget about Fisher, as it was recently revealed that a Splinter Cell Netflix animated series is in the works with Derek Kolstad, one of the creators of John Wick.

Xbox Series X Release Date Set For November

Coinciding with news that Halo Infinite has been delayed, Microsoft has narrowed down the release window for its next-gen console. The Xbox Series X will be released sometime this November, according to a blog post on the Xbox Wire. That means it’s not being delayed in order to coincide with the launch of the new Halo, which was set to be the big first-party launch game for Xbox.

A specific Xbox Series X release date within November was not set, so we’ll need to continue to wait on both that and the other big question mark–the Xbox Series X’s price. The release window was confirmed as part of the aforementioned blog post that shares highlights regarding the Xbox Series X and tries to reassure fans about launch, given the system will now debut without a new Halo game as expected. The timing of the post is somewhat conspicuous, coming immediately on the heels of Infinite’s delay.

Microsoft promises that, even with Infinite pushed to 2021, there will be “thousands of games to play, spanning four generations, when Xbox Series X launches globally this November and over 100 optimized for Xbox Series X titles, built to take full advantage of our most powerful console, are planned for this year.”

There’s no other new information in the post. It reiterates the benefits of playing existing games on Xbox Series X, the techniques being used to improve those games through backwards compatibility (including the addition of HDR), and Xbox Game Pass. In advance of Xbox Series X’s launch, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members will get access to xCloud, allowing them to stream games to their mobile device–although iOS won’t be supported, at least initially.

Unsurprisingly, there’s no mention of the Xbox Series S, the name of which was confirmed as part of a recent leak, with Xbox Series X controllers going on sale early. Series S is what’s been previously known as Lockhart–an alternate next-gen Xbox that reportedly is intended for sub-4K gaming that can be sold at a lower price than what Series X ends up coming in at.

For now, Xbox Series X remains the lone confirmed next-gen model from Microsoft. It packs the expected improved hardware for enhanced visuals and framerates up to 120fps, as well as a solid-state drive that allows for dramatically improved load times–one of the key features being touted by both Microsoft and Sony with PS5. Quick Resume is also touted, allowing players to jump between multiple games with minimal delay.

Shroud Returning To Stream On Twitch After Mixer’s Shutdown

Streamer Michael Grzesiek, aka Shroud, has revealed his post-Mixer plans: He’s heading back to Twitch. Grzesiek tweeted a video that incorporated the kill montages he’d previously posted that heavily featured the tagline “I’m coming home.” Both the Twitch logo and his Twitch channel URL were included in the video and tweet itself.

Shroud will be streaming “full time” and exclusively on Twitch, according to a press release. His first stream will be coming “soon,” but an exact date and time for his return have not yet been confirmed.

Grzesiek, like Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, had signed an exclusivity agreement with Microsoft’s now-defunct streaming platform, Mixer, and it had been unclear what his next move would be after it went under. Given the amount of Valorant content in his first set of kill montages, there was speculation that he might be getting back into the pro scene with Riot’s latest shooter–Grzesiek did get his start as a professional CSGO player, but now it’s clear that he’s sticking with streaming, and going back to the place that started it all.

Though Grzesiek apparently did look into both Facebook Gaming and YouTube as possible new homes for his streaming content, he ultimately went with Twitch because he felt his old stomping grounds were still his best option.

“As I was exploring options, I realized that there was no better place than Twitch to engage with the best and most loyal gaming community worldwide,” he said in a statement.

Despite having been off Twitch for 10 months now, Grzesiek still has over 7 million followers on the streaming platform, and the comments on his tweet show that many are excited for his return. Twitch is certainly happy, as SVP of Content at Twitch Michael Aragon said in a statement: “There’s nothing better than a homecoming, so we’re thrilled to welcome Shroud and his incredible community back to Twitch.” The length of Grzesiek’s deal and the financial details surrounding it have not been released, but Grzesiek did say that his channel would be coming back with a new look and logo.

Halo Infinite Release Date Delayed To 2021

Microsoft has announced that Halo Infinite has been delayed. The game was originally set to launch alongside the Xbox Series X in the holiday season, but the launch has been shifted to 2021.

“Today I want to share an important Halo Infinite development update with the community. We have made the difficult decision to shift our release to 2021 to ensure the team has adequate time to deliver a Halo game experience that meets our vision,” reads a statement on the 343 Industries Twitter.

“The decision to shift our release is the result of multiple factors that have contributed to development challenges, including the ongoing COVID-related impacts affecting us all this year. I want to acknowledge the hard work from our team at 343 Industries, who have remained committed to making a great game and finding solutions to development challenges. However, it is not sustainable for the well-being of our team or the overall success of the game to ship it this holiday.

“We know this will be disappointing to many of you and we all share in that sentiment. The passion and support the community has shown over the years has been incredible and inspiring. We wanted nothing more than to play our game with the community this holiday. The extra time will let us finish the critical work necessary to deliver the most ambitious Halo game ever at the quality we know our fans expect. Thank you for your support and understanding.”

Halo Infinite was most recently shown during an Xbox Series X showcase. Microsoft has talked up how the game would be quite different from previous entries in the franchise and Xbox box boss Phil Spencer also said Halo Infinite is rethinking the structure of a Halo game. Subsequently, we learned that Halo Infinite is intended to serve as a long-term platform for the franchise.

In terms of gameplay, new ideas manifested in the form of unique new features such as a map–hinting at a more open-world structure–and a grappling hook, which displayed a new dynamic to combat. Visually, Infinite looked to be harkening back to the very first Halo, with bright, colorful vistas of green fields, blue skies, and monolithic structures.

The game did receive some criticism for its visual fidelity, which Microsoft defended in the time following the showcase. Observers pointed out the low texture quality and argued that it didn’t show off the power of the Xbox Series X to the degree they expected. 343 Industries noted that it understands the criticisms and the feedback is “not falling on deaf ears.”

343 Industries also said Halo Infinite will get better-looking after launch, as the studio is planning a ray-tracing update for sometime after release. The art style, however, isn’t likely to change. A new figure available for purchase better shows off the Master Chief’s new armor, which doesn’t feature the complex level of detail from designs used in more recent Halo titles.

More recently, 343 Industries announced that the multiplayer component of Halo Infinite will be free-to-play and will support 120 frames per second on Xbox Series X. Further details on its multiplayer will be revealed at a later date. Thus far, we haven’t seen any footage of the Halo Infinite multiplayer. It was previously confirmed that the multiplayer will be available at launch. Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently said that Halo Infinite’s multiplayer was “special” and the team worked alongside professional Halo players to fine-tune the experience.

Alongside the Halo Infinite delay announcement, Microsoft revealed Xbox Series X’s release date is set for November 2020, “with thousands of games spanning four generations.” Microsoft outlined some of these titles in a blog post on the Xbox Wire and also highlighted bells and whistles some of them will enjoy on Xbox Series X.

“We have plenty to keep you busy until Chief arrives: There will be thousands of games to play, spanning four generations, when Xbox Series X launches globally this November and over 100 optimized for Xbox Series X titles, built to take full advantage of our most powerful console, are planned for this year. And with brand new console features like hardware-accelerated Direct X raytracing, framerates up to 120 frames per second, faster loading times, and Quick Resume for multiple games, playing will look and feel better, no matter which games you choose to play on day one.

“Playing your favorite games and franchises across four generations of Xbox was a key tenet for us in the next generation of console gaming. This commitment means that you will have access to thousands of titles across four generations of content–from Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

“Our back compat team continues to develop new innovations that can be applied to a curated list of titles that will enhance them even further than was possible when they were originally created. These optimizations include the ability to render titles with increased resolutions up to 4K, delivering new HDR reconstruction techniques to games that were developed years before HDR came into existence, applying anisotropic filtering to improve image quality, and creating ways to increase or double the frame rate of certain titles.”

“Prop Store is known for focusing on the 1970s and 1980s with our memorabilia auctions, and we’re thrilled to continue our tradition of offering quality Star Wars lots with the original 1977 touring Darth Vader costume in this auction,” explained Brandon Alinger, Prop Store COO in a press release. “In addition to being worn at promotional events for the original movie, the helmet’s dome has the distinction of featuring on the Advance poster for The Empire Strikes Back.”

While the outfit wasn’t used in the actual film, there are plenty of items on the auction block that were used in one of the Star Wars films. This includes a Stormtrooper helmet from A New Hope, Count Dooku’s lightsaber from Attack of the Clones, a Stormtrooper costume from The Mandalorian, and much more. However, screen-used items’ estimated selling prices are all over one thousand dollars.

This event isn’t just revolving around Star Wars items though. There is memorabilia from Army of Darkness, Aliens, Back to the Future, Judge Dredd, and more.

The auction takes place on Wednesday, August 26 and Thursday, August 27, and it will feature a “collection of film memorabilia worth over $6 million.” There are more than 850 items for this event, and bids can be placed online on the Prop Store site.

Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher Is Rainbow Six Siege’s Next Operator

Sam Fisher is coming to Rainbow Six Siege. The star of the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series will join as a playable operator in a fellow Tom Clancy series as part of its forthcoming Operation Shadow Legacy update.

Details on how he’ll function in Siege–each operator has their own distinct gadgets that make them unique–have yet to be revealed. The teaser trailer below may feature some hints as to what to expect; we see night vision kick in at one point, although Fisher himself is not wearing his signature goggles. However, an accompanying piece of key art does show those trademark green dots on his forehead, with light pouring in through three holes in the floor. That’s likely to tie in to whatever he brings to the table in the game. Toward the end of the teaser trailer, we see that his operator name may be “Zero” in Siege.

A full reveal for Shadow Legacy is planned for this Sunday, August 16, during Siege’s North American Mini Major Finals. Those will be streamed on the Rainbow Six Twitch account. If Ubisoft sticks with its usual rollout, Fisher will be one of two new operators introduced in this update.

While certainly exciting, the addition of Fisher may come as somewhat bittersweet for Splinter Cell fans. The series has been dormant for years now, with the last core game being 2013’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Fisher has popped up since then, most notably in mobile game Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad and as part of an update in yet another Tom Clancy game, Ghost Recon Breakpoint (following his appearance in Ghost Recon Wildlands). Ubisoft has suggested that the Splinter Cell series is not dead, but it has not announced any firm plans for a new entry.

Doctor Who Star Christopher Eccleston To Return To The Role After 15 Years

Christopher Eccleston was the ninth actor the play the Doctor in the long-running sci-fi show Doctor Who, and one of the most important. Eccleston took on the role in 2005 after the series had been absent from screens for 16 years, and his portrayal of the iconic Time Lord helped the show become hugely popular once more. Eccleston left the series after just one season, but now it’s been announced that he will return As the Doctor for a new series of audio adventures.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Eccleston will reprise his role in an audio series titled Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures. In a statement, Eccleston said, “After 15 years, it will be exciting to revisit the Ninth Doctor’s world, bringing back to life a character I love playing.”

The series will be produced by Big Finish, who have released numerous Doctor Who audio books over the years. Big Finish chairman Jason Haigh-Ellery provided a few more details about how Eccleston became involved with Doctor Who once more. “I first talked to Christopher about returning to the role of the Doctor at the Gallifrey One convention in February this year,” he said. “Christopher said he was enjoying meeting the fans and was pleased that his Doctor was remembered so fondly. He indicated he would be open to discussing a project with Big Finish.

“And then the pandemic happened and time moved both quickly and very slowly. Over recent months, ideas have been exchanged, and discussions had. I am so pleased that Christopher has decided to return to the role with us, and I’m excited to welcome him to the Big Finish family as we discover the new adventures of the Ninth Doctor.”

The first volume of Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures will be released in May next year. It will be available as a 4-CD boxset, as well as downloads. There will be three new audio adventures in the first volume, plus a variety of behind-the-scenes material.

Doctor Who Season 12 premiered in January this year. It was the second season to star Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor, since she took over from Peter Capaldi in 2017. The very first season of Doctor Who premiered back in 1963 and ran for 25 years before going on an extended hiatus in 1989. There was a failed attempt to bring it back with an American-produced TV movie in 1994, and the series was properly rebooted in 2005 with Eccleston.

NYCC 2020 Has Officially Been Canceled

It’s official: New York Comic Con will not be happening this year. Instead, like San Diego Comic-Con in July, it will be replaced by an entirely virtual event hosted on YouTube. This news will come as a surprise to no one, considering October-based events like Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights have already been called off.

The virtual event will partner both NYCC and its sister convention, MCM Comic Con London, for “New York Comic Con’s Metaverse,” which boasts virtual events like panels with studios and publishers, fan events, and networking opportunities. The virtual Metaverse event will take place on the dates NYCC would have been held, October 8-11. But it will not be the brand’s first run at a virtual event.

On the weekend of August 13-16, NYCC’s parent company ReedPop will be hosting a Metaverse digital event to combine some of the attractions that would have been held at events like Emerald City Comic Con, MCM Comic Con Manchester, and FloridaSuper Con.

In a statement, the company ReedPop promised they will be rolling out new announcements and schedules for the virtual events as the dates draw nearer. Updates, as well was guest announcements, virtual events, and viewing protocol can be found at findthemetaverse.com.

With any luck, the virtual event will have more success in generating fan excitement and engagement that the virtual SDCC did this year–which, unfortunately, failed to garner any real attention.

New York Comic Con’s virtual event will be held October 8-11.
