CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger are teaming up for a Cyberpunk 2077 anime Netflix. Here are 7 of the best anime from Studio Trigger to watch before you watch Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
CD Projekt Red’s CyberPunk 2077 releases later this year, and looks absolutely incredible. CD Projekt is the studio behind the fantastic “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”, and its take on the CyberPunk genre with an FPS RPG that looks similar to Deus Ex looks like it will be one of the gaming highlights of the year.
And to further hype up the game, it was just recently announced that CD Projekt Red would be teaming up with Studio TRIGGER to release a Cyberpunk anime on Netflix. And, if you know Studio Trigger’s back catalogue, this is definitely something to be excited about. Their entire library is fantastic, and actually may be the perfect fit for Cyberpunk.
Their anime often deal with issues of societal oppression, racism, and sexism. You have individuals across all spectrums, breaking boundaries and super individualistic. Not only that, but we often see some form of transformation or body modification, which is super in theme with cyberpunk. And, considering how incredible their stylistic animation can be, it will certainly suit a cyberpunk anime like Edgerunners.
So, all of that said, let’s go over Studio Trigger’s best anime to watch Before CyberPunk Edgerunners.
Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia is an action-RPG with a unique battle system that blends real-time and turn-based elements. The game features an original storyline with over 100 quests to take on, as well as more than 80 Bakugan to collect. As part of the story, you’ll be taking part in a series of Bakugan tournaments while also investigating abnormal earthquake activity that’s been happening in town.
During brawls, you’ll be running around the field in real-time collecting energy cores for your Bakugan while it does battle. As you collect cores, you’ll charge up powerful abilities that your Bakugan can then unleash. In addition to the single-player campaign, you’ll be able to battle other players around the world in online brawls.
Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia launches for Switch on November 3. You can check out the first trailer for the game above.
As for Paper Mario, Nintendo gave us an extended look at some gameplay of the upcoming title, showcasing one of the open environments you’ll explore early on in the adventure and one of the first boss encounters you’ll face. The Origami King releases on Switch next Friday, July 17. You can learn more about the game in our Paper Mario: The Origami King pre-order guide.
Competitive communities are a dime a dozen, but you’d be surprised by how far some players go to keep their favorite games alive—even if it means recreating one game within another. Fans of SOCOM: US Navy Seals have recreated the shooter within Fortnite‘s creative mode and are running their own league.
“We have over 20 of the maps across the franchise with all game mode mechanics and rules from the original series,” King Yoshi, who is also creating Super Mario 64 in Fortnite, told GameSpot. “We are constantly running tournaments, league seasons, and various other events.”
SOCOM’s Vigilance Map Recreated in Fortnite
King Yoshi and other creators have remade maps from across the Sony-published third person shooter, including Crossroads, Bitter Jungle, and Desert Glory. They’ve also created original maps inspired by level design in SOCOM. Special in-game rules, like the amount of health every player has, friendly fire, available weapons, and match length and structure have been adjusted to match the military shooter as closely as possible.
The first entry in the franchise, SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals, launched in 2002 while SOCOM 4, the last entry, released in 2011. There has been no news about another entry as the studio behind the series, Zipper Interactive, shuttered in 2012. King Yoshi and others, just like pro Super Smash Bros. Amiibo trainers, have had to take matters into their own hands.
The community has a Discord server with over 500 members who host 4v4, 6v6, and other types of tournaments. They are in the middle of the playoffs for their current season, which will end in a couple of weeks. Another season is scheduled afterwards.

Update: Ubisoft has released a short teaser for Far Cry 6, featuring Giancarlo Esposito. The brief look teases reveal at Ubisoft Forward, which takes place on July 12. Original story follows.
The listing, which has since been taken down, sheds some light on the setting for Ubisoft’s sequel. Far Cry 6 will take place in Yara, which is described as a tropical paradise in need of restoration to its former glory. Its ruthless dictator, Anton Castillo, and his son Diego are on a path to achieving that through any means necessary, igniting a revolution in the region.
Given the box art present in the listing, it’s safe to assume that Esposito will likely be playing the role of Anton Castillo. The rest of the listing also sheds light on the upgrade path you can expect for next-gen consoles. Far Cry 6 will launch on PS4 and PS5 and offer a free upgrade for digital purchases should you move from an older console to a newer one. This is like how Microsoft is handling upgrades with Smart Delivery on the Xbox Series X, but Ubisoft has yet to confirm its support for the program.
One of Ubisoft’s big reveals for its Ubisoft Forward event has already leaked, and now the company has produced a brief teaser for Far Cry 6 with a look at its big star. The short clip shows Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito smoking a cigarette, with a short message that we’ll see more to come at the event.
The leak revealed that Esposito will appear in Far Cry 6, which is supported by this tweet coming from the official Far Cry account. Far Cry 6 will take place in a tropical paradise called Yara, ruled over by the despotic Anton Castillo and his son Diego. Esposito appears likely to be playing the elder Castillo.
This tweet appears to acknowledge the leak with a cheeky reference, saying “Anton would not be pleased.” And as those who have watched Breaking Bad or its spin-off Better Call Saul can attest, you don’t want to get on Esposito’s bad side. He also appeared as new Star Wars villain in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
The listing also revealed that Far Cry 6 will appear on both current and next-gen consoles, and offer a free upgrade path for digital purchases from PlayStation 4 to PS5, similar to Microsoft’s Smart Delivery on Xbox One to Xbox Series X. According to the leaked store listing, it’s scheduled for release on February 18, 2021.
Like just about everything, anime has also taken a hit this year with production delays. Despite the let down, there are still a few fantastic anime that have been released this year so far. Eerily, they all have at least one thing in common: animal people. OK, they’re not all quite as “furry” as Beastars, but the delightfully weird Dorohedoro features a guy with a lizard head, the action-packed Tower of God has a spear-bearing, crocodile-looking guy, and so on. I guess it’s just that weird of a year–but don’t let that deter you, because these anime are for everyone.
We’ve enjoyed returning anime like Fruits Basket and Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, but here we’re showcasing brand new anime that require no prerequisite to watch. This list covers anime debuting through June 2020.
Here are the best new anime of 2020 so far, in no particular order.

Beastars
Think Zootopia, but gritty and melodramatic with plenty of romance and mystery. Melodrama is a rare strength in Beastars’ case; the dramatic camera angles and well-performed monologues only enhance this telling of a wolf that struggles both with his carnivorous instincts and desire to fit into society. Told through the lens of naïve high school upperclassman Legoshi, Beastars paints a world filled with strife and a society hiding an ugly underbelly. Things only get harder for Legoshi when a herbivore classmate is brutally murdered and suddenly all carnivores are suspects.
The anime’s CG animation is surprisingly satisfying, and the unique opening theme and animation is so catchy that we never let Netflix skip it. It’s worth noting that Beastars can get quite violent and rather sexual, so while this anime may feature animals, it may not be suitable for younger viewers.

BNA: Brand New Animal
Unlike Beastars, BNA is devoid of romance. What it does have is snappy, visually stunning action scenes–as to be expected from Studio Trigger, the team behind the critically acclaimed Kill la Kill and Promare. BNA is especially a treat for the eyes, and even the ears–I can’t get its soundtrack out of my head. Its story holds up incredibly well too, though. In the world of BNA, Beastman once hid away from human kind, but now they are a marginalized species whether they are mink or migratory bird. To combat the prejudice, Anima City was established for beastman to inhabit without fearing the judgment of humans. This is where the main character, Michiru, flees to when she inexplicably changes from a human highschooler to a raccoon/tanuki Beastman (it’s up for debate, according to her). Cue the mystery of why and how she transformed, and who the mythic Silver Wolf, the protector of the Beastmen, really is.

Somali and the Forest Spirit
Out of all the anime on this list, Somali and the Forest Spirits may just stick with me the longest. It’s a mystical tale that tells the story of a 998-year-old golem forest guardian traveling through a grandiose fantasy world with a small human child who may be the last of her kind. Somali and the Forest Spirit’s tone is reminiscent of Studio Ghibli films. It has quiet, yet beautifully powerful storytelling, whether the subject is its main characters or the imaginative friends they meet, even if just for a moment. I would especially recommend this anime to any parents, especially fathers with daughters, but as a childless lady I still thoroughly enjoyed Somali in the Forest Spirits and it tugged at my heart strings just the same.
Streaming on Crunchyroll and VRV
Dorohedoro
Dorohedoro is weird as heck. It begins at a very small scope, but as the anime continues, the larger and more creative and interesting the world gets. Kaiman is an amnesiac with the head of a lizard. We soon learn this is probably because of a practicing sorcerer–people from another dimension that constantly visit the “Hole” to test their magic, causing mass havoc and hordes of disfigured people. However, there is an extra twist to Kaiman’s disfiguration: there’s a strange man inside of his mouth, who seems to judge the people he eats.
Expect brutal and bloody fight scenes, crazy magic, and heartwarming shared meals. Yeah, it’s nuts, but I can’t dispute that the end of season one left me wanting so much more. The main mystery of who disfigured Kaiman, and what exactly is inside of him, is interesting enough. But the side characters, like his best friend Nikkaido, and even the villains, are just as intriguing. It’s odd how an anime can be both so savage and so charming at the same time, but somehow Dorohedoro makes it work.
Streaming on Netflix (Yes, Netflix is killing it this year.)
Tower of God
In true shonen fashion, Tower of God follows a boy with a singular goal in mind who must overcome harrowing obstacles and become stronger to meet them head on. It’s action-packed with power struggles, special weapons, cool techniques, magical powers, and more shonen staples. The premise is also out-of-this world: Inhabitants of “The Tower” attempt to climb it by completing extreme challenges on each floor. They may be tasked with choosing the correct door in a room full of them, or collecting a ball from beneath a giant sea monster, for example. There’s a lot more to Tower of God than just that, but that concept alone makes for continuously interesting and entertaining scenarios.
Tower of God is an adaptation of the South Korean manwha made popular in the West by digital comic service Webtoon. Like the manhwa, the anime thrusts viewers into its world without explaining much of anything. But the character relations and action scenes are enough to carry it while it slowly trickles out information about the world.
Those are the five best new anime of the year so far, at least in our opinion. What have been your favorite anime so far this year? There are, of course, even more promising anime coming out this year like the God of High School which just premiered on Crunchyroll. Be on the lookout for our article on the most promising summer anime sometime in the near future. And be sure to also check out the best anime on Netflix right now!
Deadline is reporting some good news regarding Jurassic World: Dominion’s filming currently taking place in the UK: Recent concerns that crew members had tested positive for coronavirus have been unfounded.
A spokesperson confirmed to Deadline: “Any reports indicating that Jurassic World: Dominion has halted production are categorically untrue.”
Earlier this week a number of UK outlets, including The Sun, were reporting that production has been halted on the first day. Unnamed studio sources had told The Sun that: “This was the last thing anyone expected so soon… everyone was excited about getting things back up and running on set but this could totally derail that.”
Jurassic World: Dominion is the sixth entry in the film series adapted from the 1990 Michael Crichton sci-fi novel. Dominion is directed by Colin Trevorrow, who also wrote and directed 2015’s Jurassic World and wrote and produced 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Dominion was co-written by Trevorrow and Emily Carmichael.
Dominion stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum. It has been scheduled for release on June 11, 2021.
