Devs Ending Explained By Creator Alex Garland

After eight episodes, Devs, the limited series from Ex Machina and Annihilation director Alex Garland, has come to a close. The “FX on Hulu” show began as a murder mystery set in the world of massive tech companies, before becoming much more. In our review of Devs, we described the series as “luxurious comfort food” and an “art piece that will be worth revisiting and analyzing time and time again.”

Now that viewers have reached the end of the road, though, there’s plenty to analyze based on how the story played out. Warning: The following contains spoilers for the Devs finale, “Episode 8.” If you haven’t watched the final installment of the limited series, stop reading now.

Ultimately, Devs is an exploration of predetermination versus free will. The Deus quantum computer created by the team within Amaya shows them what will happen in the future. Lily’s (Sonoya Mizuno) future shows her shooting and killing mastermind Forest (Nick Offerman), which ultimately leads to her own death. In an act of what could be seen as free will, though, she makes the choice not to kill him, going against what has been predicted. Ultimately, they still both end up dead when Stewart (Stephen McKinley Henderson) activates an emergency protocol that kills them both.

Did Lily actually make a choice? Or was it predetermined all along that she would be the one to step out of place? Mizuno has her view of her character’s actions in the finale. However, for Garland, the paradox created by Lily’s choice is part of a discussion he wanted to have about Christianity. In this instance, Lily is an analog for Eve, while the Deus computer system is God.

“This is a paradox within Christianity. Devs is deliberately echoing this, deliberately recreating a scenario where Eve takes the apple from the tree and then is punished by God for her act of free will,” Garland told GameSpot during the recent Television Critics Association press tour. “She was instructed not to do it; she exercised her free will and she did do it. As a consequence, God punished Adam and Eve by sending them out of paradise. Now, if God is omniscient, is all-knowing and all-powerful, then God knew before Eve took the apple from the tree that that is what she’d do. In fact, if God is all-knowing, he knew before he even created Eve that that is what she would do.”

Garland continued, “He’s punishing her for something that was predetermined. And that’s not her fault. In a way that’s his fault, having done it. Or, God didn’t know she was going to eat the apple. [Then] it was an act of free will, in which case God is no longer all-knowing and all-powerful, because he didn’t know that that’s what she was going to do.”

With that in mind, what comes next, following the deaths of Lily and Forest, can be viewed as their own personal afterlife. Both are digitally resurrected within a simulation in the Deus machine. Does knowing they now exist in a simulation make their ongoing lives any less real, though?

According to Garland, that is up for debate. “If you are living and experiencing the thing, that’s what real is. So it’s not unreal. It’s just that they have an extra bit of information,” he explained.

If you choose to view the world where Sonoya and Forest now exist as real, you have to give the same consideration to the other versions of the simulation that Forest alludes to. “What Forest is saying is we have a certain awareness that this is the case and [there are] these other worlds,” he said. “And in a way, if you were to believe in that particular multiverse way of looking at the world, that is also the state you and I are in right now.”

In the end, Devs is a series many viewers are going to want to watch multiple times as they find more and more to analyze about the ideas Garland explored onscreen. Thankfully, you can do just that. All eight episodes of Devs are available to stream on Hulu.

Devs Star Explains Lily’s Finale Choices

After eight episodes, Alex Garland’s FX series Devs has come to an end. The Ex Machina and Annihilation director’s first TV show, which explored the inner workings of a fictional tech company and the top secret projects within it, was “luxurious comfort food,” according to GameSpot’s Meg Downey in her Devs review.

Now that it’s come to a close, there’s a lot to discuss. Revelations were made and choices enacted that, chances are, viewers never saw coming. Warning: The following contains spoilers for the final episode of Devs, “Episode 8.” If you’ve yet to watch the finale, stop reading now.

After seeing her future laid out in front of her thanks to the Devs quantum computer, Lily (Sonoya Mizuno) learned that it was predetermined that she would shoot and kill Forest (Nick Offerman) in the vacuum-sealed transport within the lab, ultimately leading to her own death as the transport fell to the ground and exposed her to an atmosphere with no oxygen to breathe. However, this is not how the actual events play out in the end. Instead, she tosses the gun before the doors of the transport are sealed.

Speaking about that moment to GameSpot at the TV Critics Association press tour, Mizuno explained when she believes Lily decided to go against the machine’s predetermination. “In my mind, it was when [Forest] says the thing about ‘Deus,’ that he’s made God. This machine is God,” the actress said. “And she says, ‘I think our time is up.’ For me, in that point, that was when Lily decides that it’s not going to go down the way you think it’s going to go down. And it’s such a simple action.”

Still, Mizuno is quick to admit that she feels this act of rebellion was also predetermined, even if it’s not the future that the Deus machine was showing them, which is why the simulation could not show anything beyond that moment. “It does become kind of confusing because it’s like, was that predetermined too? That she was going to throw the gun? Yes, it was,” she said. “She was always going to be the one who broke the rules.”

Still, in breaking the rules, Lily paid with her life anyway. Though she didn’t shoot Forest, Devs team member Stewart (Stephen McKinley Henderson) activated an emergency protocol that deactivated the electromagnets in the transport and sent it hurtling toward the ground, leading to both Lily and Forest suffocating.

But that wasn’t the end. Thanks to the power of Deus, they were both able to digitally live past the moment of their deaths–inside of the computer as part of a simulation. It’s certainly a complicated existence, as the only two people in their “world” who know it’s not real are Lily and Forest. For Mizuno, it’s a happy ending for her character.

“I did feel like it was a happy ending for her because she goes to Jamie and that, for me, was always the main point for her,” she said. “We talked a lot about how you have these relationships in your teens and early 20s. And then when you’re in your late 20s and early 30s, the kind of relationships, broadly speaking, for a lot of people they change and love means something different.”

The actress continued, “She’s in her late 20s, and she’s made some mistakes and she thinks she loves this guy [Sergei], but she realizes through these circumstances that actually what she really needs and who she really loves on a deeper level is the other guy [Jamie]. And so the machine actually allows her to be with that person after she’s made those mistakes, after he died. It’s still the opportunity to be with the person.”

That’s where the story of Lily and Devs comes to an end. With the show’s status as a limited series, it is not meant to continue beyond this eight-episode story. Of course, that doesn’t mean viewers won’t be wondering what happens next. Will Lily tell Jamie they exist in a simulation? What about Forest? Will he one day share that news with his family?

“That that’s up to the viewer to decide, basically,” Mizuno said.

All eight episodes of Devs are available to stream on Hulu. While you’re still processing the final episode, make sure to take a look at creator Alex Garland’s explanation of what the ending means.

WWE Hall Of Famer Howard “The Fink” Finkel Passes Away at 69

In what has been an emotional week for WWE, but more sad news has surfaced. On April 16, WWE announced that legendary ring announcer Howard “The Fink” Finkel has passed away at the age of 69.

Finkel began his career with the WWWF with Vince McMahon, Sr. in 1975, and would continue working for his son Vince McMahon when the company eventually was rechristened the WWF and becoming one of the fixtures of the wrestling company. Finkel is considered one of the greatest ring announcers in all of sports.

He was inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame 2009 by another “voice of wrestling”, “Mean” Gene Okerlund. Among his contributions to wrestling are actually inventing the term “Wrestlemania” and dubbing Ricky Steamboat “Dragon” as well as being known for being WWE’s chief statistician.

Despite being a ring announcer, Finkel got into a few matches along the way, including battling his longtime rival Harvey Wippleman in a Tuxedo Match on Raw, and later helped X-Pac shave Jeff Jarrett’s head in a Hair vs. Hair Match at SummerSlam 1998.

Finkel’s trademark finish to a match that would crown a new champion was distinctive and entirely all his own, something that future announcers would still try to emulate.

Developer Aspyr and Lucasfilm are bringing this game forward with modernized controls and believe this is the perfect time for this Star Wars classic to race once again. Producer James Vicari explained why this is so important;

“Honestly, because good games should never be forgotten and great games deserve to be revisited as much as possible,” Vicari said. “I think Racer, like Jedi Academy and Jedi Outcast before it, has two crucial qualities: it’s a great game and it has emotional resonance. Those are very important to us. We really believe in reuniting fans with something they cherished, or connecting a new audience with something they may have missed.”

Vicari mentioned Jedi Academy, which was recently announced at the last Nintendo Direct Mini and re-released on Nintendo Switch alongside the reveal that Star Wars Episode I: Racer would also be on its way shortly.

Star Wars Episode I: Racer was re-released on PC via GOG in 2018, and now more Star Wars fans will have a chance to relieve the racing game that we said “feels almost as good as the movie.”

RE3’s Resistance Mode Patch Incoming With Daily Mission Tweaks And More

Resident Evil Resistance, the asynchronous multiplayer take on the series that released alongside Resident Evil 3, is going to undergo some major changes. In a message to fans, Capcom said that it’s taking feedback seriously and outlined one of the incoming changes.

The message says the team is working on a patch and looking into various quality-of-life issues. One of those is a tweak to how the game handles daily missions. It also notes that it’s making additional improvements to matchmaking. This is in addition to the content roadmap Capcom rolled out for Resistance.

The studio didn’t describe what other changes might be under consideration, but it did just invite feedback with a survey. That was focused mostly on how players found out about Resistance and whether they’re planning to adopt one of the next-generation consoles, PlayStation 5 and/or Xbox Series X. A separate, similar survey gauged if fans want to see more remakes.

Resistance is part of Resident Evil 3, which hit a big sales milestone very quickly.

“As a remake, Resident Evil 3 not only falls short of honoring its source, but it also doesn’t quite stick the landing as a standalone horror experience,” Alessandro Fillari wrote in GameSpot’s Resident Evil 3 review. “Even without taking into account the original game, or its predecessor, RE3 struggles to keep up with its pace amid a clashing of elements from survival horror and standard action. While it has a strong start and gives its principal villain some great moments, this truncated retelling of the concluding game from the original Resident Evil trilogy doesn’t do it proper justice.”

Spongebob Squarepants: Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated Gets a Release Date

The release date for Spongebob Squarepants: Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated has been revealed, and it’s coming on June 23.

THQ Nordic announced the date in a “pre-hydrated” trailer, which features new gameplay footage of Spongebob, Patrick, and Sandy-based levels as well, as some of the boss fights in the game. It also features a quick look at the game’s new multiplayer which seems to be wave-based arena-like battles featuring PvE elements.

This release date comes after an infographic released by Nintendo in January seemingly revealed a May release date for Spongebob Squarepants: Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated. That infographic, which featured the release dates of many upcoming Nintendo Switch titles, highlighted a May 22 release date for this Spongebob game. THQ Nordic told IGN at the time that a release date for the game was not known, confirming that the May 22 release date was not real.

Oddly enough, May 22 was originally the release date for the upcoming The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which features a Keanu Reeves cameo. That movie’s release was delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic though and is now set for release on July 31, 2020.

Leak Reveals Crysis Remastered Is Coming To PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch

Can it run Crysis? That was the question put forward to any new gaming PC after Crytek’s sci-fi FPS launched in 2007. The super-powered shooter was famous for its highly detailed tropical environments and freeform sandbox combat, and now it’s coming to modern consoles and PCs in Crysis Remastered, according to a recent leak.

The remaster was revealed on Crytek’s official website, but the page has since been removed as it appears someone flipped the switch too early. That didn’t stop plenty of people from grabbing screenshots and posting them all over social media, though.

Twitter user lashman dug into the site’s metadata and discovered a product description for the game. It reads: “Crysis Remastered brings new graphic features, high-quality textures, and the CRYENGINE’s native hardware–and API-agnostic ray tracing solution for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and–for the very first time–Nintendo Switch.”

A splash image on the site also doubled down and reveals the platforms as PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The Intel Gaming Twitter account also got in on the act, before deleting the tweet. However, the Intel UK Twitter account still has a tweet live as of the time of writing.

The Intel Gaming Twitter account also announced the game before deleting the tweet.
The Intel Gaming Twitter account also announced the game before deleting the tweet.

The news isn’t too surprising considering the Crysis Twitter account recently came out of hibernation to begin teasing something new. With references to Crysis protagonist Nomad, and the splash image using an almost identical pose to the original game’s boxart, it’s probably safe to assume that this is a remaster of the first game only, and none of its sequels will be included.

The last game in the series, Crysis 3, was released in 2013 and was also developed by Crytek. The company shut down some studios in 2015 amid financial troubles, but most recently put out Hunt: Showdown in 2018.

The original Crysis was awarded 9.5/10 in GameSpot’s Crysis review, with Jason Ocampo saying, “If you put it all together, Crysis is just remarkable. This is a game that pushes the envelope in terms of both technology and gameplay and does so with aplomb. Crysis raises the expectations for every shooter to follow when it comes to graphics, interactivity, environments, immersiveness, AI, and gameplay. Quite simply, Crysis represents the first-person shooter at its finest, most evolved form.”
