Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Explains Why There’s No Character Gender Option Anymore

CD Projekt Red is doing away with traditional character gender options in Cyberpunk 2077 to keep with the cyberpunk ethos of the genre. The developers confirmed the latest development in a new interview.

Metro caught up with CD Projekt Red senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers to talk more about the world building in Cyberpunk 2077, and how that manifests in the gameplay. Specifically, Metro asked about gender in Cyberpunk 2077, an area that CD Projekt Red received criticism for in the past.

Jonkers said the developers are working to make Cyberpunk 2077 “really inclusive.” This resulted in gameplay design choices like an expanded character customization menu.

Meet Every Character and Cast Member in Netflix’s Dark Crystal Prequel

Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance arguably has one of the most impressive voice casts ever assembled, including genre mainstays like Sigourney Weaver, Mark Hamill, and Simon Pegg; Game of Thrones alums Nathalie Emmanuel, Lena Headey, and Natalie Dormer; and Harry Potter stars like Jason Isaacs and Helena Bonham Carter.

The show is already drawing comparisons to Game of Thrones for its sprawling ensemble cast of warring clans, anchored by Emmanuel’s Deet, Taron Egerton’s Rian, and Anya Taylor-Joy’s Brea, and you’d be forgiven for being unable to tell which Skesis is which in the first episode, which throws you right into the middle of a tumultuous political power struggle taking place in the world of Thra.

Netflix’s New Mobster Movie From Martin Scorsese Has An Epic Runtime

Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese’s new mobster movie, The Irishman, is a very long film. It’s been reported that the movie will run for a whopping 3 hours and 30 minutes.

That makes it Scorsese’s longest movie ever, according to IndieWire. At 210 minutes, The Irishman is longer than Wolf of Wall Street (180 minutes), Casino (178 minutes), Gangs of New York (167 minutes) and Goodfellas (147 minutes).

The runtime for The Irishman comes from the movie’s New York Film Festival page, which notes that the length is subject to change. Given the movie doesn’t officially release until the end of November, it is possible that the runtime may change. The movie premieres at the NYFF on September 27, before having a limited theatrical run starting on November 1. It then widely premieres on Netflix on November 27.

The Irishman is based on the Charles Brandt book “I Heard You Paint Houses.” The film stars Robert De Niro as Frank Sheeran, who returns from World War II and joins the mob as a hitman.

Al Pacino plays the union boss Jimmy Hoffa, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Joe Pesci, who along with De Niro starred in Scorsese’s Goodfellas and Casino, also appears in The Irishman.

Batman/Superman #1 Captures the Best of Both Worlds

When DC launched Superman/Batman back in 2003, the series’ appeal couldn’t be simpler. DC’s biggest creators working with the company’s two most iconic heroes, all on a series built around the widescreen action approach that was so popular at the time. For various reasons, that appeal never fully translated over to 2013’s Batman/Superman. But with the launch of a new volume of Batman/Superman, DC does a far better job of recapturing that old magic. Superstar creators plus iconic heroes plus a dastardly villain equals a strong debut issue.

Batman/Superman builds directly on the foundation of Dark Nights: Metal and The Batman Who Laughs, with the series pitting the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel against a nemesis who has all the most formidable traits of Batman and the Joker. And lest readers accuse the Batman Who Laughs of being well below Superman’s pay grade, this series also introduces “The Infected,” a group of DC heroes who have been secretly corrupted by this demented villain.

Industry Icon John Carmack Shares His Thoughts On The Current State Of Video Games

Famed video game designer John Carmack, one of the founders of Doom and Wolfenstein studio id Software, who now works at Facebook on the Oculus virtual reality platform, appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast today–and he had a lot to say. One of the topics that came up was Carmack’s thoughts on the current state of games today. He said he’s generally optimistic, though he has some reservations as well.

In the past, some games had more of a “distinct flavor,” Carmack noted. That might have been because they weren’t subject to the level of focus-testing that sometimes exists in modern games, Carmack said. In fact, he said some modern games are “focus-grouped to death.”

That might be because games have become so expensive to make. Carmack said some AAA games have budgets that can run into the “hundreds of millions of dollars,” and as such, the publishers of those games focus-test them to ensure they appeal to a mass audience so they make their money back.

Here are Carmack’s full comments:

“One of the interesting things as we look at game design today versus the old days is a lot of people fall into a nostalgia trap about saying, ‘Well, the games I grew up with were the greatest games ever,’ and you see it with music and movies and everything,” Carmack said. “I tend to be more optimistic about the state of things today.”

“The amount of effort that goes into the modern games is extraordinary. The detail and all the quality on all the different levels. There is a little sense of, games are so expensive to make now, sometimes in the hundreds of millions of dollars, that they do have to be conservative. They have to be careful to make sure that they’ve got something that has a broad, mass appeal. And I think that is the upside of some of the older games where they might have a little bit more of a distinct flavor; they weren’t sort of focus-grouped to death in the way that some of the more modern games can be.”

Carmack is now the CTO of Oculus VR. The company’s latest product is Oculus Quest, which is a standalone virtual reality headset that does not require a computer.

Matthew McConaughey Is Now A College Professor, Will Teach Classes This Fall

Actor Matthew McConaughey is now a professor, and he will teach classes at an American university beginning this fall. The University of Texas appointed the Oscar-winner to the role of a professor in the school’s Moody College of Communication. He will teach classes in the Department of Radio-Television-Film.

The school said in a press release that it appointed McConaughey to professor “in recognition of his outstanding work as a teach and mentor” to the school’s students. The Dallas Buyers Club and True Detective actor has been a “visiting instructor” at UT since 2015. He started at the time co-teaching a film production class alongside faculty member Scott Rice. In that role, McConaughey created some of the course’s curriculum.

“It’s the class I wish I would have had when I was in film school. Working in the classroom with these students gives me a chance to prepare them,” McConaughey said in a statement. “Making movies, turning words on paper into film, is both a science and art–no matter the time or generation. The elements of truth and genuine joy for the process are timeless. That will always be our classroom focus.”

McConaughey himself graduated from UT back in 1993, so it’s a homecoming of sorts for the actor.

Looking ahead to the Fall 2019 semester, McConaughey’s class will see students studying his 2012 movie, Mud, along with the upcoming Guy Ritchie film The Gentlemen. Director Jeff Nichols, who directed McConaughey in Mud, is scheduled to appear in McConaughey’s class this year.

New Leak Reveals Apex Legends May Get Crypto And An Anti-Titan Weapon In Season 3

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

With the end of the limited-time Iron Crown event, the second season of Apex Legends has officially begun to wind down. Respawn has already confirmed every new season will bring with it a new Legend, weapon, and map change. Thanks to a leak, we may now know the first two. And new items have already started appearing in King’s Canyon that hint at the battle royale’s upcoming map change.

Reddit user Teves3D posted leaked images of Apex Legends Season 3’s new Legend and weapon–both supposedly revealed by EA at a GameStop managers meeting. As theorized based off hints from Apex Legends Season 2 reveal trailer, the new Legend is supposedly the hacker, Crypto. The new weapon is revealed to be the Charge Rifle.

According to Apex Legends dataminer That1MiningGuy and reported by Dexerto, Crypto’s rumored tactical skill summons a controllable drone that can remotely open doors, loot bins, and pick up teammates’ respawn banners. His passive skill supposedly allows him and his teammates to see and mark targets via the drone, and his ultimate sends out an EMP pulse from the drone that does shield damage and slows enemies–similar to Wattson’s Perimeter Security tactical.

The Charge Rifle is from both Titanfall and Titanfall 2. The powerful laser cannon is actually used for damaging Titans, making this the first anti-Titan weapon to be added to Apex Legends. In the Titanfall games, the Charge Rifle is slow to fire but it has the longest range of any anti-Titan weapon and it deals a tremendous amount of damage. Respawn hasn’t made drastic changes to any of the other Titanfall firearms that are also in Apex Legends, so it’s probable that the Charge Rifle will be the same–operating as a powerful sniper rifle-like gun.

Whether the Charge Rifle is added as a standard energy weapon, like the Havoc, or a Legendary supply crate weapon, like the L-Star, remains to be revealed. I’d assume the former, simply because a Legendary supply crate sniper, the Kraber, already exists and the Charge Rifle is distinct enough to have a different use from the energy ammo-using sniper Triple Take.

In terms of map changes, Reddit user FrozenFroh has noticed construction flags at the base camp in Shattered Forest, behind Hydro Dam. FrozenFroh believes these flags hint at Wraith’s Town Takeover–a datamined map change that will supposedly go live at the end of September and transform the designated area into an underground compound that fleshes out the interdimensional skirmisher’s lore and backstory. It’s supposedly a small change, like the Octane-themed adjustment to the settlement outside Thunderdome at the start of the Iron Crown event.

It’s worth bearing in mind that Respawn has not confirmed any of this. Perhaps Crypto and the Charge Rifle are coming to Apex Legends but at a later date instead of the start of Season 3. Wraith’s Town Takeover might not be the scheduled map change for Season 3 either, and simply be the last piece of new content before the end of Season 2. Regardless, we’ll find out soon enough as Season 3 is scheduled to begin at the start of October.

Apex Legends is available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

The TSA Has Banned Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Coke Bottles

Those who visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge should not plan on taking home one particular collectible, at least if their trip home involves a flight in the United States.

Galaxy’s Edge recently opened in both Anaheim’s Disneyland and Orlando’s Disney World resorts and brought with it a whole slew of new and exciting Star Wars merch for fans. You can build your own droids and craft your own unique lightsaber while you wander the streets of Batuu, a brand-new Star Wars planet made for the theme park lands exclusively. Of course, at some point in your journey, you’re bound to get thirsty–but don’t worry, Batuu has that covered, too: Coke products are for sale all throughout the planet, but they don’t break the land’s “immersion.” You won’t find any cans or regular looking bottles here; instead, your soda will come to you in a spherical “thermal detonator” bottle, with all the labels written in Aurebesh, one of Star Wars’ many alien languages.

The detonator Coke bottles became wildly popular even before Galaxy’s Edge was open to the public, so it’s no surprise that fans have wanted to take them home. But, unfortunately, for those who made the trip to a Disney resort with a flight, taking your souvenirs with you just got a lot harder. The TSA has banned them from both carry-on and checked bags.

The reason? No replica or inert explosive devices are allowed on planes–not even ones from a galaxy far, far away.

It’s unclear whether or not Disney will find a way to circumvent this issue for fans traveling to parks with other purchase options. As it stands right now, the only way to get your hands on the detonator Coke bottles is to pick them up in person from Batuu or to hand over a pretty penny on Ebay.

Cyberpunk 2077 Drops Binary Gender Options In Character Creator

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

CD Projekt Red has faced several controversies with its depiction of transhumanism and gender representation in its upcoming open-world action RPG Cyberpunk 2077. However, the developer is eager to respond to fan feedback and create a more inclusive experience. In this respect, the team has reworked Cyberpunk 2077’s character creator and removed the binary gender options.

“You know, we really want to make a video game that’s really inclusive,” senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers said in an interview with Metro. “Of course, if you tackle certain subjects then you will expect people to have an opinion about it and we respect that. And it’s good that people give us feedback. And our character creation menu, for instance, compared to the last demo we now give you so many more options. For instance, you don’t choose your gender anymore. You don’t choose, ‘I want to be a female or male character’ you now choose a body type. Because we want you to feel free to create any character you want.”

After selecting your preferred body type, you then have the option to give your character one of two different voices. “One that’s male sounding, one is female sounding,” Jonkers said. “You can mix and match. You can just connect them any way you want. And then we have a lot of extra skin tones and tattoos and hairstyles. So we really want to give people the freedom to make their own character and play the way they want to play.”

By providing more agency over your character’s preferred gender and skin tone, CD Projekt Red is hoping more players are able to create the type of protagonist they want in Cyberpunk 2077. Most NPCs you meet will have an established gender and sexual orientation as well in hopes of curating more believable in-game relationships. But the team is open to further changes and welcome feedback from their fans. “Our team is very international and very diverse but we have asked for a lot of feedback,” Jonkers said. “We always ask for feedback and even when we show these demos, we still ask people to tell us what they think. We just want to know what we can improve on because we want to make a really good game and we really want to make a game that everybody is comfortable playing. But at the same time, we’ll tackle difficult issues. It is a cyberpunk world after all.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled to release for Xbox One, PS4, and PC on April 16, 2020. The game is scheduled to release for Google Stadia in 2020 as well.
