Annapurna Interactive’s Parent Company Seeking Bankruptcy

Though Annapurna Interactive has a bevy of award-winning games under its belt, including Donut County, Florence, Gorogoa, and What Remains of Edith Finch, the publisher’s parent company seems to be in a financial bind, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Annapurna Pictures, the film production company best known for popular hits like 2013’s Her (starring Joaquin Phoenix) and 2014’s Foxcatcher (starring Steve Carell), has retained a law firm to explore bankruptcy protection.

According to THR’s report, Annapurna Pictures could “no longer sustain the [bleeding of money]” from lackluster box office performers like 2016’s black comedy thriller The Bad Batch (starring Keanu Reeves), 2017’s crime drama Detroit (starring John Boyega), 2019’s animated adventure Missing Link (starring Hugh Jackman), and more. An Annapurna spokesperson told THR that the company “is in negotiations to restructure [its] deals with the banks [but] are dedicated to Annapurna’s future.”

The company, founded in 2011 by the daughter of Oracle Corporation’s co-founder Larry Ellison, has several arms under its umbrella, including prolific indie publisher Annapurna Interactive. Company founder Megan Ellison, following THR’s report, sent a note to her staff, saying, “Restructuring deals with financial institutions is not uncommon, [but] the truth is that we [Annapurna Pictures] are well on our continued path toward success.” She said that giving a “sense of security” is paramount to her and the company as a whole. “I believe in what we make and have no intention of stopping any time soon,” Megan wrote. “We have a lot of exciting things on the horizon and I have no doubt all of our hard work will continue to show Annapurna’s unique and powerful place in this industry.”

As Gamasutra notes, It’s unclear how the company’s “restructuring” will affect Annapurna Interactive. There’s also no clarification on how well the publisher’s games have been doing as of late.

Annapurna Interactive recently announced its haunting adventure title Twelve Minutes on Xbox’s stage during E3 2019. The studio’s latest publishing credits, Outer Wilds, launched on PC and Xbox One in May 2019. In our Outer Wilds review, we said, “By letting you chart your own course and piece together its mystery at your own pace, Outer Wilds makes each of its expeditions feel incredibly personal and absolutely unmissable.”

Epix’s Pennyworth Gives Batman’s Mom an Origin Story

For more on the series, be sure to check out our spoiler-free review of the Pennyworth series premiere right here.

Epix’s Pennyworth will air its third and fourth episodes, titled “Martha Kane” and “Lady Penelope” respectively, on Sunday, August 11. Martha Kane, who some might know as Bruce Wayne’s future mom, will join Alfred and Thomas Wayne on thrilling new adventures. And while the comic books have touched on Martha’s character from time to time, she’s never been fully explored in a live-action TV series or movie.

We spoke to actress Emma Paetz (Gentleman Jack) about the challenges of playing Batman’s future mom, and if she ever felt any pressure taking on such an important role. “I felt very liberated because most of what people know about Martha and Thomas is them dying and that being the catalyst for Batman’s story,” Paetz told IGN. “So there’s not a lot about how they live and how they were as people. So I didn’t feel the weight of other people’s expectations.”

The Walking Dead Season 10 First Images Released

The Walking Dead is about to hit double-figures, with the premiere of Season 10 less than two months away. AMC’s long-running zombie drama might not be the record-breaking ratings smash it once was, but it’s still one of the most popular shows on TV. The first images from the new season have now been released.

The images show most of the characters that survived the shocking events at the end of Season 9. There’s Michonne (Danai Gurira), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Carol (Melissa McBride), Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), Aaron (Ross Marquand), and Ezekiel (Khary Payton). And of course, there are some zombies in there too. Check the images out below:

The Walking Dead Season 10 will continue the conflict between the show’s survivors and the villainous Whisperers, who wear the faces of the dead. It premieres on October 6. AMC has released an official synopsis for the new season. It states: “The Whisperers are a threat unlike any they have ever faced. Backed by a massive horde of the dead it is seemingly a fight they cannot win. The question of what to do and the fear it breeds will infect the communities and give rise to paranoia, propaganda, secret agendas, and infighting that will test them as individuals and as a society.”

Season 10 will also be the final one for Gurira, who has played Michonne since Season 3. It was announced that the star will be leaving the show in February, and that she will only appear in “handful of episodes” in the new season. She is the third high-profile departure from the series in the last couple of years, following the exits of Andrew Lincoln (Rick) and Lauren Cohen (Maggie).

However, while Lincoln has left the main show, he will reprise his role in a series of Walking Dead movies, the first of which was teased at San Diego Comic-Con last month. In addition, a new Walking Dead spin-off show is set to arrive in 2020. It does not yet have a title, but a mysterious first teaser was released last week.
