The Clovehitch Killer Review

The Clovehitch Killer is in theaters and available on VOD and Digital HD on November 16.

The contemporary idea of a serial killer is a very American phenomenon. In IFC’s new offering The Clovehitch Killer, director Duncan Skiles and writer Christopher Ford dissect it with chilling accuracy.

Tyler Burnside (Charlie Plummer) is a young upstanding citizen from a small town in Kentucky that a decade ago was ravaged by a spate of serial killings which were never solved. The murders are the proverbial ghost which haunt the town, with an annual remembrance attended by all local citizens from the adults who survived it to the children who weren’t even alive when the killings began. It’s a perfect representation of the hold that these killers have on the national psyche, taking over and quickly becoming an obsession, especially when they evade capture.

It might seem a bit quaint to be talking about something that plays physical media, but many of us still have a wall of discs – or at least a couple shelves – and might even still be adding to that collection. I personally added Blade Runner 2049 to my collection this summer because though the availability of streaming content continues to grow, it still doesn’t encompass everything, since new content is added and old stuff is removed from services monthly.

Fallout 76 B.E.T.A. Impressions

After 20 hours spent in the West-Virginian wasteland of Fallout 76 via the now-concluded B.E.T.A. (playing on Xbox One X, if you’re curious), I’ve been left with an overarching sense of curiosity. Mainly, I’m curious why Fallout 76 exists.

That’s not meant to be a criticism. With so many elements working together and against one another, I wonder why this is the next Fallout game that we’re playing, as opposed to one that leans harder into the traditional story-driven single-player experience or a full-fledged multiplayer survival game set in the Fallout universe. As it stands now, Fallout 76 is neither of those things – it’s stuck in some strange Appalachian limbo between two points.

The Road to Overlord: When Horror Mixes with World War II Movies

It’s not exaggeration to say that World War II was a war of many horrors, but as the years have passed, storytellers have used the shocking, world-spanning conflict as the backdrop for many horror stories that go above and beyond the battlefield.

Julius Avery’s Overlord (read our review here), about a squad of American soldiers whose mission sends them straight to a Nazi mad scientist’s horrifying laboratory, is the latest and probably the most expensive World War II horror movie to date, but it’s by no means the first. There’s a long history of World War II horror movies, some of them brilliant, some of them schlocky. So buckle up, folks. These are the World War II horror movies you really need to see…

DC’s Black Label Is Getting Much Bigger

DC’s new Black Label imprint is poised to get much bigger in the months ahead. In addition to original projects like Batman: Damned and Superman: Year One, DC will be reprinting no fewer than 23 classic graphic novels under the Black Label banner.

The Black Label line emphasizes stories geared towards older readers and with little or no ties to current DC Comics continuity. Accordingly, DC will be focusing on popular standalone graphic novels like Watchmen, All-Star Superman, The Dark Knight Returns and Kingdom Come.

Strategy Guide Publisher Prima Games Shutting Down

Longtime strategy guide maker Prima Games is shutting down next year, according to new reports.

Variety reports that a spokesperson for publisher DK said “I can confirm that the decision has been made to no longer commission new Prima Games strategy guides and the U.S.-based imprint will be discontinued in Spring 2019. We are in conversations with the Prima Games team and cannot comment on this further at this point.”
