Nintendo Is Hiring for a Zelda-Related Project

Nintendo appears to be starting work on a new Legend of Zelda project, according to a pair of job listings.

First spotted by Resetera user guru-guru, the listings are for a 3DCG designer and a level designer. Neither reveals much about what sort of Zelda project the developers would be working on at Nintendo, but do have callouts to a few Legend of Zelda franchise staples.

Unsurprisingly, Nintendo wants the designer to have experience working on action games and to be able to work on designing terrain like fields and dungeons. Similarly, the level designer needs to have worked on planning video game dungeons, fields, and enemies.

Blizzard Has ‘No Plans’ for Warcraft 4 Right Now, Warcraft 3: Reforged Is the Priority

Fans of Warcraft’s real-time strategy roots might have assumed that the announcement of Warcraft 3: Reforged at BlizzCon 2018 indicated that a full-fledged fourth game was on the way, but it doesn’t appear that this is the case – at least for now.

Speaking to GameSpot, Blizzard senior producer Pete Stilwell said that his team’s priority, “first and foremost,” is to make Warcraft 3: Reforged as good as it can possibly be. Stilwell stopped short of saying Blizzard would never develop a fourth Warcraft game, but said the studio doesn’t have any plans for it at the moment.

New Fortnite 6.22 Update Out Now [Updated]

Epic has announced that the next update for Fortnite will go live on Tuesday, November 6. The game will experience downtime while Update 6.22 is rolled out, which is scheduled to start at 1 AM PT / 4 AM ET / 9 AM GMT. [Update] Update 6.22 is now available and you can see what’s new in the full patch notes.

As with previous Fortnite updates, Epic will release the full patch notes for Update 6.22 on the day of its release. If the developer follows the same pattern as the last several patches, the notes will release just prior to Fortnite’s scheduled downtime. We’ll update this post once the patch notes are released.

Although it has not been confirmed, it’s probably safe to assume that Fortnite’s newest weapon, the Heavy Assault Rifle, is a part of this new update. The Heavy AR appears to be based on real-life AK firearms and deals serious damage when fired in short, concentrated bursts. Epic hasn’t announced when the new weapon will be added to Fortnite, but it’s recent tease suggests it will be a part of Update 6.22.

Fortnitemares, as well as the challenges and rewards associated to the event, has officially ended as of last week. The limited-time event ended with another strange in-game phenomenon where the massive purple cube transported players to another realm. Even if the season of scares is over, Season 6 challenges still offer several spooky rewards if you’re clinging to the Halloween spirit. You can have your in-game character grow more wolf-like with each level up if you unlock Season 6’s Legendary Dire Wolf skin, for example.

Fortnite is available for Xbox One, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. The game supports cross-play across all platforms.

Fortnite Update 6.22 Patch Notes: Heavy AR, Blitz, Team Terror, And More

Epic Games has release Fortnite update 6.22 and detailed the contents of the latest update. The major new addition is an assault rifle called the “Heavy AR,” but there’s also two new Limited-Time Modes. The first, called Team Terror, features “two teams [battling] it out while Cube Monsters.” Its another take on the players versus players and environment gameplay introduced as part of the Halloween Fortnitemares, but with more players involved.

The second Limited-Time Mode is called “Blitz” and is described as “a faster-paced version of Battle Royale. The match begins with the storm moving towards the island, and the delay between each circle is shorter than normal, creating matches that are 15 minutes long or less. The map also has extra loot and resources. Profile Stats count in this mode, so fight hard for the Victory Royale.”

You can check out the patch notes for the Fortnite: Battle Royale below. Head to the Fortnite website to see what’s new with the Save the World mode.

SNK 40th Anniversary Collection Review – It Belongs In A Museum

As an anthology of games from SNK’s simpler days, the 40th Anniversary Collection offers a variety of classics that are more fun than you might expect given their age. The simple-looking Vanguard (1981) may not give off a rousing first impression, for example, but play it a bit and you begin to discover that its dynamic scrolling system and proclivity for handing out invincibility power-ups make it more than a predictable space shooter. This and many other entries show a glimpse of a company developing its prowess for making arcade games, and it’s fascinating to take it all in. This is in large part thanks to the great attention to detail and comprehensive research that went into cataloging and smartly presenting an unsung but important part of gaming history. What’s more impressive, and less obvious, is the work that was required to make every game in the collection playable at all.

The full extent of developer Digital Eclipse’s efforts is difficult to know from the sidelines, but it’s recognized among gaming historians that the team holds itself to a very high standard and often succeeds at meeting it. Beyond programming emulators, it also helps track down relics–original arcade motherboards–when the source code has been confirmed lost by SNK, in addition to scanning and restoring marketing materials that tell the story around the games at the time. Regular maintenance can keep old arcade boards alive, but with dwindling numbers of working units in the hands of private collectors, there’s a feeling of “now or never” when it comes to preservation. The SNK 40th Collection is a treasure trove of classics that heeds the call.

At launch, there are 14 games to play: Alpha Mission, Athena, Crystalis, Guerilla War, Ikari Warriors, Ikari Warriors 2: Victory Road, Ikari III: The Rescue, Iron Tank: Invasion of Normandy, P.O.W., Prehistoric Isle, Psycho Soldier, Street Smart, TNK III, and Vanguard. For some of these games where there was an NES home port of the arcade original, you get both versions to compare and contrast. It’s a great lens with which to examine the mindset of the day, where everyone wanted to bring the arcade experience home and people were willing to accept compromised graphics and gameplay to get there.

A perfect example of this is Ikari Warriors, one of a few proto-twin-stick shooters in the collection. As evident by the included console port, when the game made the transition to the NES, you could only shoot in the direction you were moving, rather than independently, as you would in the arcade game. Now that the collection is on Switch with two analog sticks to handle the controls, we are that much closer to having the true Ikari Warriors arcade experience at home. The game actually used a single arcade stick that had an added rotation function, but short of releasing a new peripheral to exactly replicate the stick, Digital Eclipse has gone as far as possible to achieve what consumers wanted when Ikari Warriors was on everyone’s radar.

While there are a lot of solid games on hand, there are no doubt going to be games that are more interesting in theory than in practice. Given this, it’s nice to see that each game–minus some NES ports–has an autoplay option. This will not only make it easy for you to examine a game with ease but also gives you the chance to tag in when a game gets good. Disengaging autopilot and taking the wheel isn’t the smartest way to learn how to play any game, but if you find yourself up against a difficult section, you can also trigger the rewind button to fix mistakes and undo accidental deaths.

The 40th Anniversary Collection gives you a lot to play and many ways to tailor the experience to your whims, including settings that come in handy while playing vertically oriented games. From a technical and experiential standpoint, it’s an all-around great collection. And if everything goes according to plan, Digital Eclipse has 11 more games scheduled to arrive before the end of the year via free patches and DLC.

In the meantime, if you exhaust interest in playing what’s around, there are a lot of special features to explore. Scans include assorted marketing sheets and advertisements but even go so far as to include independent fan zines from the ’80s and arcade game guides. For a more in-depth peek into the past, every game released by SNK between 1978 and 1990 gets a neatly animated history lesson, complete with screenshots and interesting anecdotes that help tell the overall story of SNK’s formative years. And if you want to just zone out to some nostalgic music, there are soundtracks for 12 of the games in the collection ready from the start.

Digital Eclipse proves once again that it’s the right team for the job of both preserving and resurrecting classic video games. For SNK and its fans, the team has elevated some of the company’s most important milestones. It’s responsible for more than just Neo Geo games, and though not every game that came before is worth replaying on its own today, the addition of supplemental materials and revitalizing modern gaming conveniences make them feel more interesting than they have in years, and in some cases, decades.

Will Smith Confirms Bad Boys 3 Is Actually Happening

It’s been 15 years since Bad Boys II hit theaters. In the decade-and-a-half that’s passed, the possibility of a third film in the franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence has been teased repeatedly. Still, it’s never come to light. It looks like that is finally changing, though.

According to social media posts from both Smith and Lawrence, Bad Boys 3 is officially happening. “It’s been a LOOOONG time Coming,” Smith wrote on Instagram. “But now it’s here! [Bad Boys] for life. We back!!” Accompanying the caption was a video of the two actors, celebrating the big news. “Bad Boys 3 is happening, it’s official,” Smith screamed. This is a massive change from just a year ago when Lawrence was convinced the film would never come to be.

This news follows Sony Pictures giving the film a January 2020 release date back in May, though without any real information. What we do know is that it seems the film is still called Bad Boys For Life, if Smith and Lawrence’s posts are any indication.

There are few details on what to expect from the next Bad Boys, though one thing is clear. Michael Bay, who directed the first two films, will not return to helm the third. It was reported back in January that Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the duo behind the pilot of FX’s Snowfall and the movie Black, are taking over the project. Jerry Bruckheimer is returning as a producer.

Now let the speculation begin of whether Bad Boys 4 will ever happen. After all, that movie was first announced back in 2015.

Batman: The Animated Series Documentary Explores The Show’s Perfect Villains

Will there ever be a better comic book TV show than Batman: The Animated Series? Given how tough it would be to top, probably not. In many ways, it was the thing that best-defined Batman in the 1990s. Whether it was Kevin Conroy’s voice as Batman, the Gotham City it created, or the adventures it sent the caped crusader on.

Of course, there’s another aspect of Batman: The Animated Series that was near perfection and that’s its villains. From the introduction of Harley Quinn to having Mark Hamill voice The Joker, Batman: TAS‘s bad guys were second to none.

Now that the show has arrived on Blu-ray, fans are getting the chance to get to know the baddies a bit more. In The Heart of Batman, a new feature-length documentary included with the Blu-ray set, the cast and crew of the show speak in-depth about a number of topics. One that’s particularly interesting, though, is the villains.

In the exclusive video above, the show’s creative team says what makes the baddies on Batman: TAS so special is that you can relate to them. “They found a humanness in the villains,” voice director Andrea Romano said. “They found a ‘why’ and they let us know the ‘why.'”

“How much can you feel for a character like Victor Fries?” writer Paul Dini wonders. “Can you empathize with him? Can you love a character like Harley Quinn, who makes bad decisions and still keeps going back to this maniac? Can you empathize a little bit with the Riddler and his ongoing need to try and prove himself over Batman?”

And when the episodes came to a close, they didn’t always leave a smile on your face. “In our show, we were able to end something without necessarily a happy ending,” director and character designer Dan Riba explained. “The villain gets his comeuppance. But because we related to the character and we felt sorry for him, it’s a tragedy.”

It’s hard to imagine another animated series–or comic book TV or movie, for that matter–that has treated its villains the same way. Then again. that’s a big part of what makes Batman: The Animated Series so special.

The Batman: The Animated Series Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-ray is available now. The set contains all 109 episodes of the series–both Batman: TAS and The New Batman Adventures–as well as the animated films Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub Zero. Besides the documentary, the special features also include a number of featurettes and episode commentaries.
