Constantine: City of Demons Movie Review

Note: this is a mostly spoiler-free review of the movie version of Constantine: City of Demons, which is available now in both Digital HD format and on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray.

NBC may have canceled Constantine after one brief season, but Matt Ryan’s version of the treacherous occultist has taken on a healthy second life elsewhere. Not only will Ryan be reprising the role as a series regular in the fourth season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, he’s also the star of DC’s latest direct-to-video animated movie, Constantine: City of Demons. Whether in live-action or animation, Ryan continues to do justice to this iconic anti-hero.

City of Demons saw partial release earlier this year on the CW Seed streaming platform (you can check out my review of those initial five episodes here). For whatever reason, The CW never finished the story in that format, opting instead to release the entire series as an animated movie. While City of Demons is a slightly tougher sell when fans are being asked to pay actual money, it’s still a worthwhile diversion for fans of the character. It’s certainly a much more faithful adaptation of the source material than that *other* Constantine movie. And if you’d rather not fork over the $20, the series will also be broadcast on The CW on October 15 as “Constantine: The Legend Continues.”

Birds of Prey May Be Why Suicide Squad 2 Lost Its Director

Suicide Squad has a new writer in James Gunn, who may also be its new director, and a rumor has now emerged that purportedly explains what happened to the previous writer/director.

Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant) was said to be DC and Warner Bros.’ top choice to helm the supervillains-turned-good-guys sequel as of last month. That’s clearly no longer the case, and Variety Film Reporter Justin Kroll claims to have the scoop on why the change was made.

“On the Gavin O’Connor front in relation to

,” Kroll tweeted earlier today, “hearing the story he had for the sequel ended up almost being identical to the BIRDS OF PREY story and when that film was given the go ahead to go before

HP OMEN Reactor Gaming Mouse Review

HP is expanding its OMEN line of gaming gear with a new high-end mouse it calls the Reactor (See it on Amazon). The name is a reference to the fact that it is the first mouse (to my knowledge) that uses switches that are optical-mechanical, theoretically allowing for faster clicking since you just have to break a light beam to register a click instead of waiting for a metal switch to rock back into place. It’s also got RGB lighting, adjustable ergonomics, and what HP says is the industry’s first steel USB cable. By my count that’s two industry firsts, in one mouse, making its lofty price tag of $79.99 not too surprising.

Confirmed: James Gunn Writing Suicide Squad 2 After Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Firing

Update: When reached for comment, Warner Bros. told GameSpot, “It is confirmed that James Gunn is writing the next installment of the Suicide Squad franchise.” That means it’s no longer a possibility, but Gunn has indeed signed on to write the next Suicide Squad movie. It remains to be seen whether he will also direct the project, though it was reported that is a distinct possibility.

Furthermore, Guardians star Dave Bautista has seemingly expressed interest in starring in Gunn’s new movie. Just what role he’d play (or if this was even his intention) remains to be seen, but Bautista has been a vocal supporter of Gunn since Disney fired him. The original story follows.

It looks like Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has found his rebound relationship after being dumped by Marvel Studios. It’s being reported that Gunn is in talks to jump to Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, where he would write and possibly direct the next Suicide Squad movie.

The news comes from io9, which is reporting that Warner Bros. has confirmed discussions with Gunn. The plan, at this point, is for him to write the sequel “with an eye to direct.” According to io9, the man behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and 2 will have “a completely new take on the property.”

This all comes after Gunn was fired by Marvel Studios from helming the third Guardians of the Galaxy film, after a series of old tweets resurfaced. Thus far, Disney, which owns Marvel Studios, has not announced a replacement director for Gunn or whether it will use the script he’d already written for the movie. However, star Dave Bautista (Drax) has publicly said if the script isn’t used, he would ask to be released from his contract.

The tweets in question were from nearly a decade ago, in which Gunn made jokes about rape and pedophilia. Though Gunn had previously apologized for the messages and did so when they resurfaced, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement, “The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”

Since then, the entire Guardians cast has signed a public letter supporting their director, while the third installment in the franchise has been put on hold indefinitely, according to Bautista. The film was reportedly scheduled to start production in early 2019, with a projected release in 2020.

Gunn joining the project will likely mean an even longer wait for Suicide Squad 2, though there was very little indication of when fans would see the movie anyway. It was reported over a year ago that The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor would helm the film, but there’s been no real news since then.

In the meantime, a new Joker film, starring Joaquin Phoenix, has gone into production, while Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is set to appear in a Birds of Prey movie. Now, with Gunn potentially taking on Suicide Squad 2, DC’s villains could be in good shape for the coming years.

Guardians Star Dave Bautista Wants In On James Gunn’s Suicide Squad Movie

Not long after being fired from his role on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, director James Gunn has found himself with a job at Marvel rival DC. Gunn has been confirmed as the writer of a new Suicide Squad movie, and shortly after the news broke, one of his Guardians stars has expressed interest in working on the film.

Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the Guardians series, tweeted an article about Gunn’s new role. He stated simply: “Where do I sign up!” Just who he could play is anyone’s guess, though King Shark is a popular idea among some here at GameSpot.

It’s possible Bautista was only expressing interest in watching the movie, but he has been extremely supportive of Gunn since Disney fired him over tweets from a decade ago. While the full cast of stars released a letter in support of Gunn, Bautista has been particularly outspoken on the subject. He’s even said he wants to be let out of his contract if Gunn’s Guardians 3 script isn’t ultimately used.

Guardians 3 was set to begin production early next year ahead of a 2020 release, but the movie has been put on hold indefinitely, according to previous statements from Bautista. Gunn, meanwhile, just saw his new horror movie delayed.

There’s no word yet on what the new Suicide Squad will look like, nor whether it will be a direct sequel to the maligned 2016 film. It was at least previously set to be directed by The Accountant‘s Gavin O’Connor, although an io9 report suggests Gunn could direct the movie in addition to writing it.

The 25 Best Arrowverse Episodes

The Arrowverse has enjoyed some amazing growth over the past six years. What started as one series about a hooded vigilante has ballooned into a massive shared universe that touches on nearly every corner of DC Comics lore. Between Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, the Arrowverse is now several hundred episodes deep and still going strong.

Let’s take a look back and spotlight the very best of the best with our breakdown of the 25 greatest episodes from those four shows. Did your favorites make the cut? Read on!

One of the hallmarks of the Superman franchise is that both Clark and his cousin tend to have bad reactions when exposed to the many colored variations of Kryptonite. That was the basis of this Season 1 episode, as exposure to red Kryptonite brought out Kara’s dark side. It’s a lot of fun seeing Melissa Benoist take such an evil turn, but this episode mined its premise for drama as well as laughs. For a series that routinely struggled to find itself during its first year, this episode served as a welcome sign of what was possible.

Freddy Krueger Lives: Here’s Photos Of Robert Englund Reprising His Role On The Goldbergs

It’s a Halloween miracle! For the first time since 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason, Robert England is slipping back into his glove of knives to reprise his iconic A Nightmare on Elm Street role as Freddy Krueger one more time.

Englund will guest star on a special Halloween episode of ABC’s The Goldbergs, titled “Mister Knifey-Hands.” A synopsis for the episode reads, “Despite Beverly’s wishes, Jackie’s parents allow Adam to watch A Nightmare on Elm Street and a disagreement between the families ensues. But Beverly dreams of facing off with horror icon Freddy Krueger, which teaches her an important lesson about her son’s relationship with Jackie.”

The photos from the episode find Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) in a rather foggy dreamscape, where she encounters Freddy, of course, as well as a trio of creepy girls skipping rope–imagery that should look very familiar to A Nightmare on Elm Street fans. The images show that even though Englund has aged, Freddy is truly eternal. The actor looks as at home as ever in the glove, burned skin, and trademark sweater and hat of the monster.

This may just be a one-off appearance on The Goldbergs, but hopefully, someone will see England back in his old costume and take a hint that it’s time for Freddy to be back on the big screen. After all, Michael Myers is back, why not Freddy Krueger?

The “Mister Knifey-Hands” episode of The Goldberg airs Wednesday, October 24, at 8:00 PM ET on ABC. For more fall TV you should keep an eye on, check out our must-see shows.

Streaming Might Hurt Single-Player Games, But Survival Games Are Thriving

Online content creators are now, more than ever, the avenue through which many games are able to rise to success – or plummet to failure. Twitch streams and Let’s Plays on YouTube put thousands of new eyeballs on AAA and indie titles alike, serving as testing grounds for prospective new players as well as entertainment in their own right.

While some developers still fear that platforms like Twitch will hurt single-player games, one specific genre has demonstrated how to adapt and thrive in the age of Twitch streams and Let’s Plays: survival games.

Ever since the days of Minecraft, and later DayZ, survival games have found audiences on Twitch and YouTube. Games like Rust and ARK: Survival Evolved maintain steady presences on Twitch and YouTube years after release, and the genre isn’t slowing down either.
