New Releases: Top PS4 Digital Game Releases May 10-22

New Releases: Top PS4 Digital Game Releases May 10-22

Check out the latest digital-only games available through PlayStation Store, including Laser League, NBA Playgrounds 2, and H1Z1! (Sponsored by Totally Digital at PlayStation Store)

New Releases typically runs down the hottest games releasing on one particular week, but this special sponsored episode focuses on three games you’ll only be able to buy digitally. The competitive Laser League, the cartoony basketball game NBA Playgrounds 2, and the battle royale shooter H1Z1 are all coming to PS4 via the PlayStation Store over the next few weeks.

Laser League — May 10

Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Laser League calls itself a “future sport,” and considering all the flashing neon lights, it’s probably right. The goal is simple: change those lights to your team’s color, but don’t touch the other team’s color or you’ll get zapped. But like any sport, it seems easy to learn but difficult to master. Between six different classes and a bunch of power-ups, Laser League games can get pretty complex–and crazy.

NBA Playgrounds 2 — May 22

Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch

Laser League isn’t the only sport you can score in this episode. NBA Playgrounds 2 has the same two-on-two action as the first game, but with a ton of new modes you can enjoy alone or with friends. Playgrounds Championship mode lets you climb the tournament ladder against other players all over the world, and with over 200 NBA players from all eras of the league to choose from, there’s gonna be some serious competition.

H1Z1 — May 22

Available on: PS4

The popular battle royale game is coming to PS4 with some changes–and not just new DualShock controls. For one, crafting is completely scrapped. Instead, you’ll get all your high-level gear from supply drops. The deadly gas zone also closes in faster, keeping the whole match moving at a quicker pace. To top it all off, the PS4 version of H1Z1 will be totally free to play, just like its PC counterpart.

Disney Teases ‘New Franchise Beyond Avengers’

Disney has teased a new Marvel movie franchise following next year’s Avengers 4.

Per THR, Disney CEO Bob Iger discussed the future of the MCU during an earnings call, teasing there could be a brand new Marvel superhero team that’s not the Avengers. “We meet on a regular basis with our Marvel team, and we’ve plotted out Marvel movies that will take us well into the next decade,” Iger said.

“I’m guessing we will try our hand at what I’ll call a new franchise beyond Avengers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t see more Avengers down the road,” he added. “We just haven’t made any announcements about that.”

PES 2019 Officially Revealed, Release Date And New Features Detailed

Konami has officially unveiled this year’s entry in its long-running football franchise, Pro Evolution Soccer. PES 2019 is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC with a slightly earlier than usual release date of August 28 (August 30 in Europe).

Among the new features detailed by Konami are visible player fatigue on the pitch, improved ball physics and player positioning, and greater player individuality. There’s also the usual roster of new animations, new celebrations, and improved in-game graphics, as well as a new menu interface.

MyClub see “its biggest revamp to date,” says Konami, with a new player card design system, and High Performance Players that boast “temporarily boosted stats based on real world performances,” similar to FIFA Ultimate Team’s in-form cards. Master League, meanwhile, includes a new negotiation system and “realistic transfers.”

Regarding licenses, Konami says it has more fully licensed leagues, stadiums, and clubs, but none of those have so far been disclosed other than Liverpool, Barcelona, and Borussia Dortmund, all of which featured in PES 2018. The publisher recently lost the UEFA license, meaning the Champions League and Europa League–as well as the European Championships in future editions of PES–will no longer be included in their official forms. This year’s edition does, however, see the return of David Beckham as a playable Legend.

After EA brought FIFA 18 to Nintendo Switch last year, some fans had hoped Konami would follow suit with PES 2019. However those hopes have not been met, with no Switch version revealed as yet.

We enjoyed the most recent Pro Evo and awarded it an 8/10 in our PES 2018 review. “When you get onto the pitch, no other football game feels as good as PES 2018,” we wrote at the time. “The slower pace is a definite improvement, helping tread the line between realism and fun near-perfectly. There’s just something about the players’ movement and the kinds of arcs the ball makes in the air that’s just so pleasant to control–every pass, header, and shot just feels right. And when it clicks, and you score a thunderous strike from the edge of the area or finish off a slick passing move or even when you launch an ugly long ball forward to grab a last-gasp winner, it’s the closest feeling you’ll get to being out there scoring yourself.”

Skyrim’s Most Ambitious Mod Ever

Skyrim’s Most Ambitious Mod Ever

Beyond Skyrim is a collection of modding teams attempting the impossible: to recreate nearly every single province in Tamriel. Here is their story.

The size and density of Skyrim was already staggering, but a collective of modding teams is aiming to make it even bigger. “Beyond Skyrim” is more than a single modding project. It’s a cooperative collective of modding teams, each tackling massive chunks of Tamriel landmass. In this in-depth video, we take a closer look at the huge undertaking, its inspirations, and its potential perils and pitfalls.

The ambitious project began before Skyrim was released, when various modding teams were stepping on each others’ toes. The proposal was made to approach this next Elder Scrolls game differently, with a spirit of cooperation and sharing resources. Beyond Skyrim is the result, creating a web of various teams working individually on their own areas of the world within some loose guidelines.

In all, Beyond Skyrim hopes to capture seven distinct areas of Tamriel. Each one will have its own visual assets, voice acting, music, sound effects, NPC routines, and more. It’s no wonder that so far the only project to have reached a playable state is Beyond Skyrim Bruma, an area that includes mountainous regions and one major city.

Naturally the modders share concerns about the project being shut down by Bethesda, and its all-volunteer workforce has a significant rate of turnover. The project is likely only to live as long as Skyrim does, so once The Elder Scrolls 6 releases, interest in a Skyrim mod project is likely to fade. For the time being, though, it’s an massive and impressive undertaking.

Marvel’s Venom Relaunch Lives Up to the Hype

It’s been almost exactly 30 years since Venom made his debut in Amazing Spider-Man #300. The character has seen a great many highs and lows since then, becoming one of Marvel’s biggest cash cows in the ’90s, cycling through several new hosts and story directions and finally coming full circle with his most recent series. Marvel is celebrating that anniversary in the best and simplest way possible – by kicking off a new ongoing series featuring a promising status quo and a terrific creative team.

Avengers: Infinity War Co-Director Discusses The Hulk Issue

Spoiler warning: This post contains major plot details for Avengers: Infinity War, so proceed with caution. For more on Infinity War, here’s what happened to the Infinity Gauntlet at the end.

The Hulk might actually just be tired of smashing — not necessarily scared — in Avengers: Infinity War, according to co-director Joe Russo.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via ComicBook.com), Russo revealed why the green guy doesn’t pop up through most of Avengers: Infinity War — even as Bruce Banner pleads for him to come out. “I think people have interpreted it as Hulk’s scared,” the co-director said. “I mean, certainly, that’s not a … I don’t know that the Hulk is ever … he’s had his ass kicked before, and he loves a good fight. But I think that it’s really reflective of the journey from
