X-Men Horror Movie New Mutants Finally Gets Creepy Second Trailer

The X-Men movie The New Mutants has become one of the most notoriously troubled productions of recent years. It was originally shot back in 2017 and set for an April 2018 release, but rumors of extensive reshoots and repeated delays have caused some to wonder when we’ll actually see it–including the film’s own exasperated cast members. But a new trailer has finally arrived, and providing it’s not pushed back again, the movie will hit theaters in April.

The new trailer certainly delivers the horror edge that director Josh Boone has spoken about numerous times before. The film stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Anya Taylor-Joy (Split), Blu Hunt (Another Life), Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why), and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as a group of young mutants who are being held in a sinister facility, where lots of weird things are happening. It looks really creepy and very different to last year’s X-Men flop Dark Phoenix–which, let’s face it, is not a bad thing. Check it out below.

The New Mutants releases on April 3 and also stars Alice Braga (Elysium), Antonio Banderas (Spy Kids), and Happy Anderson (Mindhunter). Boone previously made the hit teen drama The Fault in our Stars and is the co-writer and director of the upcoming TV adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand. The first New Mutants trailer was released way back in October 2017.

Boone previously spoke about what would set The New Mutants apart from other superhero movies. He told EW: “We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”

Although the failure of Dark Phoenix and last year’s Disney/Fox deal suggest that The New Mutants will be the final film in the current X-Men franchise, this might not be the case. Ryan Reynolds recently confirmed that Deadpool 3 is in the works under the Marvel Studios banner, which could potentially merge the wildly confusing X-Men timeline with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Demo Leaked, So Be Wary Of Spoilers

The Final Fantasy VII Remake demo recently leaked, revealing a nicely nostalgic opening cinematic. Fans digging into the game’s PS4 code have found lots of other details, including some Square Enix didn’t intend to make public quite yet.

Ars Technica reports that the demo is similar but slightly longer than the one available at E3 2019, but the most interesting nuggets of information came from those exporting its files to PC and picking them apart. Storyboards and renders have revealed some characters and outfits, which serve as potential story spoilers. None of this necessarily means these will be in the final game, but if you’re spoiler-phobic be aware that details are floating about.

The leaks come from a demo that appears to be made for public use, since it ends with directing the player to pre-purchase the game through the PlayStation Store. No plans have been announced to release the demo, however, so we’re not sure when it will be publicly available.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake is coming on March 3 on PS4. This is the first part of a planned series, and Square Enix has indicated this first part will essentially cover the story through the exit of Midgar. No release plans have been announced for the subsequent chapters. Check out GameSpot’s FF7 Remake pre-order guide for more details.

Sony Teases CES Briefing With “The Future Is Coming,” But No Word On PS5 Reveal

The first big technology news event of 2020, CES, kicks off this week in Las Vegas. Among the attendees is tech giant Sony, which has now teased some of what to expect from its briefing at the annual tradeshow–but there is no reason to expect any PlayStation 5 news.

Sony’s CES 2020 landing page teases, “The future is coming.” The teaser goes on to offer some idea of what to expect from Sony’s briefing, albeit at a very high and ambiguous level. “At CES 2020 Sony is unveiling a unique vision of the future, bringing creativity and technology together like never before, to unleash new sensations and emotions,” reads the message.

One element of Sony’s “future” is the PlayStation 5, which is scheduled to launch this year. There is no word as of yet if Sony will share any PS5 details during its CES briefing, however.

Sony is a gigantic company, and gaming–while important to the business–is only one component of the overall organization. Historically, Sony tends to hold dedicated events for PlayStation announcements.

The PlayStation 4, for example, was officially announced and detailed for the first time during an event in New York City back in February 2013, which was one month after CES 2013.

Sony will most likely mention the PlayStation brand during its CES 2020 briefing given its size and importance to the company’s bottom line, but those hoping for new PS5 details may want to temper their excitement.

Sony has officially confirmed the PlayStation 5, and the company has also shared some initial details around faster loading times and the guts of the console. However, Sony has yet to formally announce or show off the system.

Microsoft, meanwhile, already announced its own next-generation console, Xbox Series X, and showed the first images of the system and its new controller. This console is also slated to go on sale in Holiday 2020 alongside the PlayStation 5.

Sony’s press conference at CES takes place on January 6 beginning at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET. That works out to 1 AM in London and 12 PM in Sydney on January 7. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on Sony’s briefing and other news from the Las Vegas show in the days ahead.

Bayonetta 3 Developer PlatinumGames Promises Multiple Announcements For 2020

PlatinumGames is gearing up for a big 2020, and is promising some big announcements. The studio is currently working on Bayonetta 3 and Babylon’s Fall, both of which we’re expecting to see more of this year. In statements given to Japanese website Inside Games (which were then translated by Siliconera), studio president Kenichi Sato and studio head Atsushi Inaba have talked about their plans for the year ahead.

Sato says that he promised at the end of 2018 that 2019 “would be a year where the curtain rises for a new stage for PlatinumGames,” but that it’s happening a bit later instead. “I believe we’ll have several big announcements to deliver early in the new year, so please look forward to that.”

As Sato points out, the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 mean that “the world will be watching Japan,” and as a studio representing the country, “PlatinumGames are looking to go all-out, to get attention from fans around the world, and bring smiles to everyone.”

Inaba’s statement is brief, but he promises that “starting early on in the year, I believe we’ll continue to roll out various announcements, big and small, throughout the year.”

We’re yet to see actual gameplay footage of Bayonetta 3, whereas Babylon’s Fall was reintroduced in December 2019 as part of a Sony State of Play stream. Remasters of Bayonetta and Vanquish are also coming to PS4 and Xbox One. The studio was also previously working on Granblue Fantasy: Relink, before leaving the project in February 2019; that game is still in active development at Cygames Osaka.

PlatinumGames released Astral Chain for Nintendo Switch in 2019, their first new IP since The Wonderful 101. It received an 8/10 in our review, with reviewer Michael Higham calling it “an incredible execution of a fresh take on Platinum Games’ foundation, standing among the stylish-action greats.”

Box Office: Rise of Skywalker Closes in On a Billion Worldwide

Though tracking behind both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker still dominated the weekend box office with an estimated $34.5 million.

This brings Episode IX’s domestic total, per Variety, to around $450 million, with the film getting ever closer to a billion worldwide. Right now, globally, it stands at $919 million.

Meanwhile, the Sam Rami-produced The Grudge, written and directed by Nicolas Pesce, brought in a better-than-expected $11.3 million.

The film — which stars John Cho, Betty Gilpin, and Frankie Faison (and is more of a spinoff/sequel than a remake) — has received poor reviews from critics, including our own review (which you can read here).
