Netflix’s Messiah: Season 1 Review

This is a mostly spoiler-free review for all 10 episodes of Messiah: Season 1, which is currently available to stream on Netflix.

Netflix’s Messiah is a new geopolitical drama about the End Times return of Jesus, the Islamic “Isa,” and how this individual would truly be received in 2020.

Who would instantly believe in such a person? Who would eventually, over time, come to see their power? And, on the flip side, who would instantly doubt this figure? And what would their presence actually do to society as a whole? Needless to say, it would be pretty disrupting and damaging.

In fact, one of the most interesting themes explored in Messiah — from Mark Burnett and Roma Downey (who brought us The Bible miniseries) and Michael Petroni (who co-created 2003’s Miracles) — is the idea put forth by Michelle Monaghan’s CIA agent Eva Geller, which is that al-Massih (Mehdi Dehbi) is an agent of chaos being funded and handled by a foreign enemy looking to hack away at America’s already-fragile citizenry. In this era of “Fake News,” this is the first series to make this kind of horrifying extrapolation, looking ahead at what could happen if — you know — someone actually wanted to fake the return of Christ in order to throw the world into upheaval. “State-sponsored social disruption,” is the term used.

Pokemon Go: Last Chance To Catch Virizion

Pokemon Go is kicking off the new year with a variety of events this month, including the return of the Legendary Pokemon Heatran. Before it arrives, however, you still have a little time left to catch the current Legendary, Virizion, but you’ll need to act fast as it leaves the game on January 7.

Until then, you can encounter Virizion in five-star Raids. As usual, you’ll first need to team up with other players and battle the Legendary Pokemon before you can earn a chance to catch it. Virizion is a dual Grass/Fighting type, which makes it especially vulnerable to Flying Pokemon like Zapdos and Lugia. Fire, Ice, Poison, Psychic, and Fairy types also have an advantage over Virizion.

Once Virizion leaves Raids, the aforementioned Heatran will take its place until February 4. Heatran was previously available in Pokemon Go, but this time around, you’ll have your first chance to capture its Shiny form. You can read more details on the official Pokemon Go website.

In the meantime, Pokemon Go’s Hatchathon event returns for another year from January 2-16. During that time, you’ll be able to hatch party hat-wearing versions of Pichu and Wurmple, while party hat Pikachu, Raticate, and Wobbuffet will appear in the wild and Raids. You’ll also earn extra Stardust, Rare Candies, and other rewards like the Unova Stone when you walk certain distances.

On top of that, a new Research Breakthrough reward is available this month. Each time you achieve a Research Breakthrough in January, you’ll encounter a Lapras that knows Ice Shard or Ice Beam, making this the first time you can get the Pokemon with those moves since 2018.

Finally, January 2020’s Community Day is set for Sunday, January 19, although Niantic has not yet revealed this month’s featured Pokemon. You can catch up on more Pokemon Go news below.

Clone Wars Season 7 On Disney Plus: When Does It Air And What We Know About The Star Wars Series

In 2008, Dave Filoni brought Star Wars fans an amazing animated series that expanded on a conflict in the SW universe that the movies grazed over, the Clone Wars. Over the course of six seasons and taking place between the movies Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, the battle between the Separatists and the Republic army–which consisted of Clones and Jedi. At SDCC 2018, it was revealed Season 7 would be arriving to Disney+. We’re only a month away from the release of the new season, but what is this season going to be about?

Based on the trailer for the show’s return that was released in August, this season of Clone Wars is headed a few different places, and we could even see a connection between this show at Disney+’s The Mandalorian. More than likely, this season will cover the final days of the Clone Wars.

In the trailer which you can see above, Ahsoka Tano and Bo-Katan are seen together, and we know that Bo-Katan has possession of the Darksaber at this time–which Moff Gideon is seen holding in the final episode of The Mandalorian.

The real kicker is the appearance of Darth Maul, whose history is tied to Mandalore, as he help cause the civil war there and took it over with the Shadow Collective. He also had possession briefly of the Darksaber and caused Death Watch–the Mandalorian group–to splinter. Needless to say, Maul’s inclusion in this trailer may mean we’ll finally get to see Palpatine’s Order 66 playout in this final season, which will mark the end of the Clone Wars.

Although it’s a month away from the new season, Disney has yet to reveal exactly when the show will be hitting the service, outside of the month it will begin airing. We do know there will be 12 episodes in the season though, and we’ll keep you updated when the specific dates are revealed.

Clone Wars Season 7 release schedule:

  • Episode 1 – February
  • Episode 2
  • Episode 3
  • Episode 4
  • Episode 5
  • Episode 6
  • Episode 7
  • Episode 8
  • Episode 9
  • Episode 10
  • Episode 11
  • Episode 12

Season 7 of The Clone Wars comes to Disney+ in February.

Dragon Quest 12 Is Still “A Ways Away,” Series Creator Says

Game designer Yuji Horii has confirmed that the next mainline Dragon Quest installment, Dragon Quest 12, is “still a ways away.”

Horii took to Twitter to share the news on New Year’s Day. He couldn’t divulge a lot of details in the accompanying statement but said there might be “something we can announce” sometime in the future. The statement, translated by Siliconera, says Horii is grateful to the fans who support the franchise and the staff who support his vision. You can read Horii’s full statement below.

“Last year we started with publishing the movie Dragon Quest: Your Story, then releasing the Switch version of Dragon Quest 11, the mobile version of DQ Walk, the announcement of The Adventure of Dai anime along with its game adaptation, the production of [DQ]12 and more; even now after 33 years have passed since I made the 1st game, I feel very glad that I can do new challenges like these. Thank you very much to all users who have cheered on Dragon Quest until now, and also to all of the many staff members who have supported me. I don’t know how long I can go on, but I feel like I want to do my best just a little bit more. I hope this year will be an amazing year to everyone. I’m looking forward to work together in this year.”

The last Dragon Quest entry, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, was released in 2018 for the Nintendo 3DS, PC, and PlayStation 4. An enhanced edition of the game launched on Nintendo Switch in September 2019. We gave the title a 9/10 in our review, saying, “Once you find yourself sucked into the world of Dragon Quest XI, it’s going to be hard to put down until you reach the grand finale.”

What’s New To Hulu In January 2020? Movies, TV Shows, And Original Programming Headed Your Way

It’s the new year, and the streaming service Hulu has plenty of new content for you to check out this month. From TV shows airing the day after they premiere on television to movies and original programming, Hulu is easily one of the best streaming services available for overall content. Check out everything coming to the service below, along with a few recommendations.

Available on January 1 is all three Cube movies. The sci-fi/cult classic Cube from 1998 follows a group of people who are trapped in a cube room, which is part of a much larger cube, and they must find a way to escape. Also, some of the rooms have traps, which can kill you. The 2002 sequel takes the plot of the first film and adds time travel to the mix–in a sense. It’s a bizarre but worthwhile sequel. Then there is the 2004 prequel Cube Zero, which takes place from the perspective of someone watching over the Cube experiment. It’s not great, but it’s a fun watch as well.

Aside from sci-fi films taking place in a 6-sided container, there are plenty of other things headed to Hulu you may want to watch. On January 30, the 2019 film Fighting With My Family arrives. The film follows the recreated events that led WWE’s Paige from England to NXT to Raw. In his review of the film, Chris E. Hayner said, “So where does Fighting with My Family, the studio’s first wrestling-centric biopic, land on that spectrum? As it turns out, it’s actually WWE’s best movie yet. That’s not to say it’s perfect, but WWE has taken a piece of its own history and crafted a truly engaging and inspiring film.”

Below, you’ll find everything coming to Hulu this month. For more streaming news, check out what’s headed to Disney+ and Netflix this month.
