Best Gaming Deals This Week At Best Buy: Huge Nintendo Switch Sale, Headsets, And More

Now that we’re halfway into January, retailers are settling back into their weekly sales, and Best Buy’s latest round of discounts is available now online. The retailer’s most notable deals this week are for Nintendo Switch digital games–Best Buy is price-matching certain game deals available in the Nintendo Eshop as part of Nintendo’s New Year Sale. On top of that, you’ll find a few good PS4 and Xbox One game deals as well as discounts on accessories like headphones and capture cards.

While over 1,000 games are currently marked down in the Eshop, a handful of games are available at the same price at Best Buy as digital downloads. First-party Switch games are $18 off, a notable discount considering Nintendo’s first-party titles rarely go for less than $60. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Kirby Star Allies, Yoshi’s Crafted World, Arms, and Splatoon 2 are all available for $42 as part of the sale. Resident Evil fans can snag the original Resident Evil for $15 and Resident Evil 4 for $20. Other notable Switch deals include Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition for $40, Gris for $8.49, What Remains of Edith Finch for $14, and Hotline Miami Collection for $12.49.

Pickings are slim for PS4 and Xbox One owners, but you can snag Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for $35, down from $60. Some of 2019’s biggest games–Borderlands 3, Resident Evil 2, and Devil May Cry 5–are all discounted to $25 each.

If you’re looking to pick up Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, which releases this Friday, there’s a nice freebie available at Best Buy. Not only will you get the game’s pre-order bonuses for buying early, but you’ll also get free two months of anime streaming service FunimationNow Premium Plus. Kakarot isn’t currently discounted, but with Best Buy’s price-match guarantee, you should be able to get the game for $50 due to it being on sale at Amazon and Walmart.

Apex Legends “Meteor” Isn’t A Season 4 Tease After All

Apex Legends players thought they may have caught a glimpse of a teaser for the coming season, but it turned out to simply be a very unusual bug. A falling object that appeared to be a meteor was actually an error involving Gibraltar’s Ultimate ability.

GamesRadar reports that the rumors have been swirling since October, when several players started seeing a meteor falling from the sky. At least one captured and shared the sight, and it certainly looks like a meteor streaking through the sky and crashing into the ground.

The fan community has been working to understand the sight, and Reddit user PenPineapplePen recently discovered how to reliably replicate the bug. It comes from triggering Gibraltar’s Defensive Bombardment ultimate ability, but if he’s killed after calling the airstrike, the missile comes in horizontally. More datamined sleuthing from Twitter user That1MiningGuy explained further disparities, like if his beacon grenade falls through the map.

Apex Legends Season 3 began in October, but Respawn hasn’t made clear when we can expect Season 4 to follow. Launched last January, it was one of GameSpot’s Best Games of 2019–in part because of the updates that kept us coming back.

“Apex Legends was one of those games we kept coming back to throughout the year, whether it was to dig into new updates or just enjoy the thrill of claiming to be champions,” wrote Michael Higham. “Never have we, the staff at GameSpot, been this excited to ask the question: where we droppin’?”

Cyberpunk 2077: Take A Look Inside Dark Horse’s Deluxe Art Book

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of our most anticipated games of 2020. While its April 16 release date is only three months away, we’re still looking for every bit of sweet, sweet Night City content we can get our hands on to make the wait seem that much less painful.

In the game, players will take control of a fully customizable character for an RPG experience by CD Projekt Red, the studio that brought us The Witcher series. What’s New To Disney Plus This Week? Movies, TV Shows, And Originals

It’s still the new kid on the block, but the streaming service Disney+ is still living up to the hype, offering up movies, TV shows, and original programming for you to check out. This week, a new original series debuts, and there is a lot more coming. Check out the full release list below, along with our recommendations.

On Friday, another episode of The World According to Jeff Goldblum debuts. In the 11th episode of the first season, Goldblum goes on the hunt to look at the world of swimming pools, to better understand why people like them so much. Watch as the host of the show learns the history of his topic, all while remaining confused that people who are so infatuated with pools.

There is a new original series arriving this Friday called Diary of a Future President. In this new show, a young girl named Elena has her life chronicled. One day, she’ll grow up to be President of the United States, but this comedic series will follow her ups and downs as she traverses life through middle school.

Pokemon Go Adds New Gen 5 Pokemon

Some new Pokemon have arrived in Pokemon Go. A handful of monsters originally from the Unova region–the setting of Pokemon Black and White–can now be found in the wild and raids in the hit Pokemon mobile game. On top of that, Niantic has also implemented a new method of evolving certain Pokemon that harkens back to the series’ roots.

Pokemon Go players around the world can now encounter the following Pokemon in the wild:

  • Roggenrola
  • Tympole
  • Dwebble
  • Trubbish
  • Karrablast
  • Joltik
  • Shelmet

On top of that, the following Pokemon can now hatch from certain eggs:

  • 2 km eggs: Venipede, Dwebble
  • 5 km eggs: Roggenrola, Tympole, Trubbish, Karrablast, Joltik, Shelment
  • 10 km eggs: Timburr, Tirtouga, Archen, Axew

A handful of new region-exclusive Pokemon have also been added to the game. The following Pokemon can now be encountered in certain parts of the world:

  • North America, South America, Africa: Throh
  • Europe, Asia, Australia: Sawk
  • Southern United States, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean,South America: Maractus
  • Egypt, Greece: Sigilyph
  • Eastern hemisphere: Red-Striped Form Basculin
  • Western hemisphere: Blue-Striped Form Basculin

Finally, you can now evolve certain Pokemon by trading, just as you can in the mainline series. If you trade Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, Haunter, and other Pokemon that traditionally evolve through trading, the Candy cost to evolve them in Go will be removed. This also retroactively applies to these Pokemon if you’ve previously received them through trades.

In other Pokemon Go news, the Legendary Heatran recently returned to five-star Raids. Pokemon Go’s January Community Day also takes place this coming Sunday, January 19, and the featured Pokemon this month will be Piplup, the Water-type starter from Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.

The Witcher Timeline Explained With Netflix’s Interactive Map

The Witcher was one of Netflix’s most popular releases in 2019 even though it was one of the streaming platform’s later releases, with its first season debuting on December 20. Based on the sprawling book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, the TV adaptation had a lot of material to work with–an almost unwieldy amount.

Our Witcher experts have tried their hand at explaining The Witcher timeline and even The Witcher book reading order, but now Netflix has stepped in to help newcomers to the series as well with their very own interactive map and timeline of the saga. They even have their own official dedicated page for it.

The timeline is split up into different tracks following key characters like Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri as well as a general overview of the history of the series’ known universe, starting with the Conjunction of the Spheres, the cataclysmic event that allowed dangerous creatures into the World’s dimension. Episodes of the show are also marked, as you can see above.

Clicking around on key points on the timeline narrows into specific locations on the map, providing a brief description of the event and even some neat visual effects like weather. You can also use the search bar in the top left corner to bring up information on key locations, characters, beasts, races, and events in The Witcher universe, which includes their own mini timelines and links to related pages you can browse via the sidebar. The Witcher show has a wealth of Easter eggs and references related to the games and novels, so there’s a lot here to dig into if you’re a fan, and plenty to learn if you’re new to the series.

Hey, remember Morbius: The Living Vampire? No? That’s okay–not many people do. But that isn’t going to stop Sony from making a movie about him starring Jared Leto to join the strange, head-scratching web of their own totally-not-MCU-related-but-probably-MCU-related Spider-Man cinematic universe.

Recently, we were treated to our first proper look at the movie, courtesy of a full-length trailer that packed an unexpected punch. Not only did it tease some of what we should expect from Morbius himself, but some hints and clues as to where the Sony Spider-Man universe may shake out in the post-Disney acquisition world. Oh, and plenty of bats–we can’t forget the bats.

We did our best to comb through the trailer moment by moment to pull out any and all information we could find for Sony’s latest anti-hero in all his blood-sucking glory. Did you catch anything we happened to miss? Let us know in the comments below.

Massive Buy 2, Get 1 Free Collectibles Sale: Funko Pops, Action Figures, Pokemon Cards, And More

Though GameStop is primarily known as the last remaining chain retailer of video games in the US, it’s also become a pretty sweet destination for collectibles of all different varieties. As part of its weekly sale, GameStop is offering a buy two, get one free promotion on a ton of its collectibles through January 18. All of the collectibles in the promotion are on clearance already, so you’re getting even more bang for your buck here.

Because the sale focuses on clearance collectibles and not a specific type of product, the items in the promotion are quite random. There are some gems to be found, though. A number of the awesome “Movie Moments” Funko Pops are featured in the sale, including Batman and the Joker’s clash int the 1989 film and the banquet room scene from Ghostbusters.

My favorite Funko Pop in the promotion is this extremely cursed Spongebob Squarepants set, which comes with his pineapple house. If Spongebob isn’t your thing, here are some of our other favorite Pops in the sale.

Halo TV Show Update Includes First Master Chief Photo (But You Can’t See It Yet)

It will still be a while before viewers get to see Showtime’s Halo TV series debut, but it’s actually, officially happening now. After it was revealed in December that production had begun on the upcoming show, Showtime president of entertainment Gary Levine has shared a quick update.

Appearing at the TCA winter press tour, Levine revealed that he and his fellow president of Entertainment Jana Winograde had recently traveled to the set of the series, noting it is “is currently shooting all over the city of Budapest.” Unfortunately, there was no footage from the series to screen, but Levine and Winograde did come with the first photo of Pablo Schreiber in costume as Master Chief.

Unfortunately, the image was for viewing in the room only and will not be released widely at this point. In the photo, Chief is seated on a ship in his full armor–helmet included. According to Levine, it’s Schreiber in the costume, which looks like a spot-on recreation of Chief’s classic armor.

There’s been a lot of discussion over whether Master Chief will unmask at some point, revealing Schreiber’s face. Of course, in the games, Chief never removes his helmet. When asked by GameSpot about whether viewers will see Chief’s face in 2018, Levine offered, “It is a key question and an important part of our series is all I’ll say.”

After the success of The Mandalorian, which saw Pedro Pascal remain entirely hidden under a Mandalorian helmet, save for one small scene in the Season 1 finale, it seems entirely possible we will never actually see Chief’s face.

Of course, Schreiber isn’t the only cast member in the Showtime series. We have a detailed breakdown of the announced cast you can check out. However, the most notable character, after Chief, is Natasha McElhone as Dr. Catherine Halsey/Cortana. The artificial intelligence that guides Chief on his journeys will play a big role in the series.

While there’s no release date for Halo announced at this point, it’s expected to debut on Showtime in 2021.

What’s New To Netflix This Week? Movies, TV, And Originals (Jan. 12-18)

Netflix is one of the biggest, most popular streaming services currently available. And every week, new content is released from movies to TV shows to original programming. So what’s headed to Netflix this week? Well, there’s something new coming out every day for the week of January 12-18, so check out the full list of releases below, along with a few recommendations.

On Sunday, a new documentary about one of America’s favorite comedic actors arrives. Betty White: First Lady of Television chronicles the life of White, spending nearly 80 years working as an actor and producer in television. The PBS documentary aired last year, and aside from documenting her rise in the industry, the film also features interviews with Valerie Bertinelli, Georgia Engel, Tina Fey, and Ryan Reynolds.

There are a couple of Netflix originals that may pique your interest coming this week. On Wednesday, Season 6 of Grace and Frankie arrives. The series follows two women who become friends after their husbands leave them, for each other. The show has been nominated for numerous Emmy awards but has yet to win one. Also, Season 4 of Hip-Hop Evolution hits the service on Friday. The series covers the birth and growth of the hip-hop music genre, and it’s a more in-depth look than we’ve ever seen before. This upcoming season explores artists like The Neptunes, T.I., Missy Elliot, Master P, and more.

Finally, if you just want to kick back and watch something you may have seen before, the bizarre kid’s comedy Big Fat Liar arrives on Wednesday. The movie stars Frankie Muniz, Paul Giamatti, and Amanda Bynes. Muniz plays a pathological liar–who is neither big nor fat–whose story is stolen by a sleazy Hollywood producer (Giamatti). It’s the story of The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and it couldn’t be more apparent, as the character’s last names are “Shepard” and “Wolf,” and the whole movie is about lying. Bynes plays Kaylee, and her character didn’t get a last name. Let’s just assume it’s “Crier.”
