Xbox Boss Talks About Importance Of First-Party Games, And Why Xbox Won’t Copy PlayStation’s Approach

Microsoft’s Xbox team has in the past been criticized for a perceived lack of first-party exclusives compared to PlayStation and other competing platforms. But going forward, Xbox boss Phil Spencer doesn’t believe that will be an issue. After acquiring studios like Obsidian, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory, and starting a new studio with the writer of Red Dead Redemption, Microsoft now has 15 Xbox Games Studios teams, all of which are developing content exclusively for Xbox and PC.

These studio acquisitions and formations came at no small expense, of course, and Spencer recently spoke about how this was made possible thanks to the leadership from Microsoft higher-ups believing in Spencer’s vision.

“First-party content is really important to where we’re going,” Spencer said during a recent GameLab event. “It’s important to our hardware platforms, it’s important to things like Game Pass and our overall gaming strategy at Microsoft. As we got in place the new leadership team a few years ago, we started building our strategy and articulating our strategy internally to the company, it was really encouraging to see the support that we were getting from the board and the senior leadership team at the company to go and grow our first-party.”

Spencer said he feels “really good” about its numerous internal game studios and the projects they are working on. He also teased that “many” of the company’s upcoming games have not been announced yet.

Also during the event, Spencer said he does not want to try to copy a competitor’s approach to first-party game development. Some people have spoken about PlayStation titles like Uncharted and God of War and asked Microsoft where its equivalent games are. Spencer said Microsoft is thinking differently.

“We know it’s important–we know it’s something that our fans want,” Spencer said about developing first-party exclusives. “But I will also say we are going to create our first-party around the things that we feel like we need to do in order to stand up for Xbox. Sometimes we get suggestions of, ‘Where’s your X game?’ or, ‘Where’s your Y game?’ when people look at the other hardware platforms. But I don’t think our goal is to replicate what other people have done. It doesn’t help the industry to have people that are trying to do exactly the same thing with their platforms, services, or content.”

While Microsoft won’t try to directly copy the first-party strategies of Sony or Nintendo, Spencer said he feels confident that his teams are working on titles that will appeal to a broad range of players.

“I’m really proud of the diversity of content that our Xbox Games Studios teams are creating–genres, art styles, platforms, and gameplay,” he said. “Single-player, multiplayer, cooperative work that’s coming along. I’m just really proud of the diversity I’m seeing … and I think that’s going to continue. That’s going to be a mainstay for us. It won’t be about a certain kind of genre or a certain kind of story. The teams are really led by their own vision and what they want to build.”

Overall, however, Spencer acknowledged that Microsoft did not do enough in the past as it relates to first-party game development. “That’s an area where we need to do more, and we’ve done that [now],” he said.

Microsoft will showcase some of its first-party games, including Halo Infinite, during an event that is reportedly scheduled for July 23.

Mafia: Definitive Edition: Here’s How And Why They Recast Tommy Angelo For The Remake

Mafia: Definitive Edition will feature an all-new cast when it releases on August 28 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. In English language territories, Tommy will be played by Italian-Australian actor Andrew Bongiorno, who also serves as the likeness for the character and performed motion capture for the role.

In a new post on the Mafia website, developer Hanger 13 has discussed the casting process for this remake. The remake is extensive enough that they did not want to reuse the original audio from the 2002 Mafia, and according to Hanger 13 president Haden Blackman, they wanted to ensure that they made use of new technologies for this release. “Since our cinematics rely heavily on motion capture data, it was essential that we have both voice and physical performances,” he says. “We looked for actors who not only sounded the part, but also looked the part and could perform on both the motion capture stage and in the VO booth.”

While producer Nicole Sandoval initially looked into whether they could reuse the original actors, it ultimately was not viable. “No one’s voice stays the same, especially after such a long period of time,” she says. The team decided that building up an ensemble cast would be important, especially since a major theme of Mafia–and most mob media–is the concept of family.

Bongiorno, who previously starred in the TV series True Nightmares and had a part in the Ben Affleck-directed Live by Night, was the most important bit of casting for the team. Blackman says that Bongiorno got the role because he is “believable as both a mobster and a family man.” The team wanted an actor who could be “aspirational at times—someone you might want to be—but who could also convey his very human weaknesses.”

The post sings Bongiorno’s praises, and Sandoval says that the actor possessed “a distinct coolness and calmness.”

The team also brought in vocal coach Eliza Jane Schneider, who previously worked on Mafia III, to ensure that the actors got the “sounds” of 1930s Chicago (the basis for the game’s setting of Lost Heaven) right. Because the New York gangster patois is the more iconic form of “gangster” impression, Schneider worked with the actors to make sure that they were matching the right time period.

Mafia: Definitive Edition will be available as a standalone release or as part of the Mafia Trilogy, which includes improved versions of Mafia II and Mafia III as well. Check out GameSpot’s buyer’s guide for more.

Will Smith’s New Movie Sells To Apple For $120 Million

Apple has purchased yet another big movie, and they’re paying a huge fee for it. Deadline reports that the iPhone company has purchased Will Smith’s new movie, Emancipation, for $120 million USD.

The site reported that seven different companies bid on Emancipation after it was put up for sale, with Warner Bros. and Apple finishing as the final two serious candidates before Apple won out.

Emancipation stars Will Smith as a runaway slave from Louisiana who embarks on a perilous journey to the North while he’s tracked down by “cold-blooded hunters.” The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua, who made the Oscar-winning 2001 crime drama Training Day starring Denzel Washington.

Deadline also reported that Emancipation writer William N. Collage is being paid a seven-figure rate for the script. The movie is expected to be released in theatres and then on Apple TV+.

Emancipation is just the latest big get for Apple, as the company’s Apple Studios division also recently acquired the Martin Scorsese-directed movie Killers of the Flower Moon for $180 million with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro to star. Apple also recently bought the Tom Hanks World War II movie Greyhound, which was scheduled to come to theatres but moved to Apple TV+ for its July 10 debut.

Emancipation is inspired by the 1863 photograph, The Scourged Back, which further illuminated the brutality of slavery in America. Fuqua, the director of Emancipation, told Deadline, “You can’t fix the past, but you can remind people of the past and I think we have to, in an accurate, real way.”

“We all have to look for a brighter future for us all, for everyone. That’s one of the most important reasons to do things right now, is show our history. We have to face our truth before we can move forward.”

Production on Emancipation is expected to start in early 2021.

Worms Rumble Announced, Featuring Real-Time Combat And A Battle Royale Mode

Team 17 has announced a new Worms game to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary, and it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before from the series. The game, Worms Rumble, is a real-time combat game for up to 32 players, with cross-play enabled. It will release for PC, PS5, and PS4.

Each player will control a single worm in either Team Deathmatch or Battle Royale (both solo and squad) combat, and will battle it out over huge, semi-destructable environments. The game will receive regular content updates to add new levels and worm customizations, and there’s a rank system to unlock cosmetics.

Weapons available at launch include the iconic Bazooka, Hand Cannon, Baseball Bat, Assault Rifle, and Shotgun. The trailer below also shows the Holy Hand Grenade making an appearance.

There will be seasonable events and challenges to take part in, too. You can register now to try the game’s closed beta, which will run from July 15 at 4 AM PT until July 20 at midnight PT, if you’re curious about how Worms will work in real-time.

In a statement sent to press, lead designer Adam Findlay called Worms Rumble “a significant rethink around the Worms experience,” and said that he hopes that the cross-play 32-player experience will “unite the community and newcomers to the series in wonderfully Worms-tastic mayhem.”

There is no mention of a potential Xbox or Nintendo Switch release, so console players will need a PlayStation 4 or 5 to jump in.

The last game in the Worms series was Worms: W.M.D., which was a more traditional turn-based Worms combat game. It received an 8/10 in GameSpot’s review, and reviewer Jason D’Aprile called it “easily the best game in the Worms series in several years.”

Fortnite: Landing A Choppa Inside Steamy Stacks Guide

The third week of Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 3 is nearly here with a number of new challenges that will have you clicking heads all over the map. A particularly tough challenge will take you to Steamy Stacks, the flooded factory located in the upper corner of the map. You’ll need to land a choppa at the bottom of Steamy Stacks. This guide will show you how to get to Steamy Stacks with a helicopter and help you land it right in one of those stacks. After you do that, you can take on other Season 3 challenges and get ready for Aquaman.

This challenge leaked early so check back on July 2nd to try it for yourself within Fortnite.

Where is Steamy Stacks?

Steamy Stacks is located in the top right corner of the map. It’s flooded after The Device event so you can no longer explore most of it. There are still some upper floors as well as rooms in both stacks that contain weapons. It’s separated from the rest of the map by water.

How Can I Get a Helicopter?

Helicopters spawn in several regular locations across Fortnite: Chapter 2 Season 3’s map. Be aware though: the spots with helipads are usually popular, meaning you may have to fight to get to your ride.

Here are a few locations where you can find a helicopter near Steamy Stacks and the rest of the map:

  • On the southern edge of The Yacht
  • At the top of The Authority building
  • At the southern end of Rickety Rig
  • On the western side of The Fortilla
  • On the southern edge of The Yacht
  • On an island in the river north of Misty Meadows
  • South of Catty Corner on the snowy mountain
  • East of Frenzy Farm

How Do I Land A Choppa In Steamy Stacks?

The helipad locations closest to Steamy Stacks are at The Authority and The Yacht, although you can get a helicopter from any of those locations and get to Steamy Stacks easily. Depending on the route of the battle bus you should drop at the location closest to you, immediately get the helicopter and then go straight to Steamy Stacks. Be aware of where the circle is once you start flying.

Once you get there you’ll need to pilot the helicopter slowly over one of the two giant stacks and slowly descend into it. It’s easier than it sounds since you have plenty of room and the helicopter is quite sturdy. Make sure you actually land the chopper on the little watch tower within the stack in order to complete the challenge.

What Reward to I Get For Landing The Choppa?

Once those propellers stop spinning you’ll get experience points to help you level up.

Twitch Sets New Viewership Records, 5 Billion Hours Watched Last Quarter

During the first quarter of this year, Twitch broke 3 billion total hours watched for the first time. The momentum has continued from April through June as it surpassed 5 billion total hours watched for a single three-month span.

A new report from Streamlabs showcases just how popular Twitch has gotten during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as it previously averaged 2.7 billion hours watched last year. None of its competitors came close to matching its viewership as YouTube Gaming hit 1.5 billion hours and Facebook Gaming maxed out at 822 million, which is triple the amount it had last year. Microsoft’s now-defunct Mixer service came in fourth with only 106 million hours watched during the second quarter. Prominent streamers such as Shroud and Ninja, who reportedly made over $20 million to move to Mixer, could be switching back to Twitch and help boost it further. Twitch led in other key analytics, as well. Nearly 10 million unique channels streamed 192 million hours of content, which is more than double the previous quarter.

The most-watched game was Valorant, which set a single-day viewership record back on April 8. Riot Games’ competitive shooter is still going strong as it had 534 million hours watched, which was more than PUBG Mobile‘s 237 million. Fortnite came in third with 174 million views.

Meanwhile, the Electronic Sports League showed its dominance in the esports market as its ESL One and ESL Pro League events were the first and third most-watched esport events with 26 and 20 million hours watched, respectively. Popular Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament Premier Spring Showdown came in second place with fans watching for 22 million hours.

New Dead Cells “Update Of Plenty” Changes Crossbows, Adds Backpacks

Developer Evil Empire has released a new update for Dead Cells. Called the Update of Plenty, it implements notable changes to weapons, items, and the in-game economy. The full list of changes are detailed in the official patch notes.

In terms of weapons, Update of Plenty makes all crossbows into two-handed weapons. To increase a player’s willingness to try two-handed weapons, Update of Plenty also adds backpacks that allow you to hold onto an extra one-handed weapon that you can switch to in situations where your two-handed weapon might put you at a disadvantage.

When it comes to the in-game economy, Update of Plenty increases the amount of gold you can find and adjusts the pricing of gear at merchants so that you’ll be able to switch gear loadouts midway through a run without spending nearly all your money. This should be most helpful for late-game levels, as holding onto a bit of your money early on should make it easier to buy healing items in the endgame without scrounging for gold.

Below, we’ve listed the highlights of the Update of Plenty patch notes–the full notes are much too long to list them all here.

Dead Cells Update Of Plenty Patch Notes Highlights

Weapon Rework

  • Following the extremely successful weapon popularity poll, we tried to give some love to the less liked weapons and slightly nerfed the most effective ones.
  • The aim is to open up a wider range of builds, while not sacrificing what made meta builds fun.
  • Most of the changed consist of slight number tweaks, some are more profound reworks but there is one notable exceptions:
    • All Crossbows (with the exception of Sonic Crossbow which is now named Sonic Carbine) are now two-handed weapons and Survival only.
    • Multiple-nocks Bow, Marksman’s Bow and Nerves of Steel are now Tactic only and have been buffed.
  • These weapons never really shined in Tactics because there are few reasons to take them in a Tactic build rather than in a Survival Build. And we were forced to make them less efficient than other pure Tactic range weapons to balance for the dual-scaling.
  • With the 2-handed weapons becoming part of the Survival identity, it felt only natural to increase the efficiency of these weapons to make them better on par with the other choices, and to make it pure Tactic.

Economy Rework

It has been brought to our attention several times (and, frankly, we knew already) that the economy in Dead Cells was… peculiar. While everything seemed to be fine at low difficulty level, it got worse and worse in high BC, where if you wanted to buy healing you would have to basically never spend any gold on anything else. So to fix this we implemented several changes, small and big, some among them will be detailed later in this patchnote.

Here’s a short list of what changed:

  • Gold scaling is gone, long live small numbers!
  • A good amount of items had their price changed
  • To replace gold scaling, gear price now goes up with item level
  • Refining and affix reroll costs have been changed
  • Shop categories are now stats instead of equipment type
  • Shop reroll is now free, but makes items on sale pricier

Gear Qualities And Damage Rework

Bonus stats have been removed from ++ and S gears, but to compensate new scrolls have been added in biomes, enemy damage has been reduced, and gear damage has been changed to increase with item level.

This change was implemented to give back some importance to gear level, and in pair with the economy rebalance give you more opportunities (and an incentive) to switch gears during your run.

New DoT: Shocked And DoT Reworks

All damage over time statuses seemed to blend together a bit too much for our taste. We decided to try and give each DoT a unique identity, and added a fourth one, shocked, in the process. Most electric weapons and items inflict this new shock DoT.

  • New DoT, Shocked: deal damage over time to the target and all nearby targets.
  • Bleed rework: Stack enough bleed status on a target and the damages left is instantaneously dealt at once.
  • Poison rework: Upon death, propagate the poison status with reduced damages and for the remaining duration.
  • Fire un-rework: Untouched, because fire was already perfect.
  • Also, all affixes giving bonus damage on an enemy with a specific status have updated values.

Damage Mutation Rework

Damage mutations (those who give a bonus DPS to your attacks) suffered from poor scaling, making them extremely useful at low difficulties while being less and less useful as you progress through the game.

To remedy to that, we changed their bonus from a bonus DP to a bonus % of damages. This means that everything that boosts your attack (item level, item rarity, affixes, etc.) will synergize with those mutations.

Impacted mutations:

  • Combo
  • Vengeance
  • Tainted Flask
  • Support
  • Tranquility
  • Gastronomy
  • Extended Healing
