NEO: The World Ends With You Coming in 2021 for PS4 and Switch

Square Enix has revealed a new game in The World Ends With You franchise, titled NEO: The World Ends With You, scheduled to launch in Summer 2021 for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

NEO: The World Ends With You is a 3D action-RPG title, and its official description notes that players will be stepping into the shoes of ‘Rindo’ this time around, as they “unravel the mysteries of the deadly Reaper’s Game” in a stylized Shibuya.

You can check out a trailer for the game below, and an official website for the new game has also been launched.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/23/neo-the-world-ends-with-you-official-announcement-trailer”]

This is the first true 3D game in the series following the 2007 original, which was ported to modern consoles in 2018. As well as exploring the sights of Shibuya, players will “fight monsters alongside their ally companions in fast-paced action battles, and complete missions as they seek to change the fate they’ve been handed.”

The trailer introduces a number of new characters including a high-school friend of Rindo’s called Fret and a college student peer called Nagi. There’s also a mysterious hooded fellow, who looks ripped right out of Kingdom Hearts, called Minamimoto.

The official anime adaptation of The World Ends With You recently received a release window of April 2021, so it’s a good time to be a TWEWY fan!

Neo: The World Ends With You Announced, Coming Next Summer

Square Enix has announced a sequel to the cult hit The World Ends With You, simply titled Neo: The World Ends With You. The game is coming to the Nintendo Switch and PS4 next summer.

A debut trailer shows off the art style and combat and introduces some of the key characters. The dialogue is all delivered in Japanese–the first TWEWY and this one canonically take place in Shibuya–but it provides a pretty good look at the game’s tone and style.

The new game looks stylish like the first game, but now all in 3D with a distinctly Jet Set Radio look. The combat also appears to have been given an overhaul.

The original received a Switch port in 2018, which was a less-than-ideal way to play the classic but still remains one of the most accessible ways to get your hands on it so long after release. GameSpot’s Randolph Ramsay said that despite some small issues, players should still catch up with it.

Vision’s Comic Book Origins Explained | WandaVision

Over the last decade, the MCU has done a lot of legwork for some of the more niche Marvel superheroes, elevating them from relative obscurity to household name status with just a couple of big budget blockbusters. But, unsurprisingly, the transformation from comic book character to A-list live action celebrity brings some changes and updates with it. Sometimes they’re relatively minor–solidifying more obscure or esoteric bits of origin stories or shaving off clunky bits of continuity left over from years and years of publication history–but other times, they can practically reinvent the character from the ground up into something almost entirely new.

This is exactly what happened with Vision, Marvel’s charmingly obtuse superheroic robot played by Paul Bettany. Since he’s going on to star in his very own Disney+ TV series, WandaVision, by the end of the year, we figured now was a perfect time to blow the doors off the character’s lengthy and complicated history outside of the MCU. After all, if that first trailer is any indication, WandaVision is going to be jam packed with layers upon layers of some deeply arcane Marvel mythology, so it’s probably best to go in fully prepared to catch everything you possibly can.

Diablo 3 Season 22 Is Now Live, Here’s The Patch Notes

Diablo 3 is still going strong eight years later, and has just launched its 22nd season. As usual, the seasonal changeover brings a new theme, new loot to get, and various Legendary item and balance changes.

Blizzard detailed Season 22 on the Diablo 3 blog. The new theme is the Shades of the Nephalem, which means that activating a Shrine or Pylon will spawn a shadow clone of your chosen class. The shades will last for one minute (or until you die, of course) and will scale with your character’s power level. That means you’ll temporarily be roughly twice as powerful, to make short work of enemies. During Season 22, you’ll also get a fourth slot in Kanai’s Cube to further customize your character.

You’ll also be able to grab cosmetic rewards that you may have missed the first time. This time, rewards from Season 10 are coming back, like pieces of the Conqueror Set, the Black Soulstone themed portraits, and the Loremaster pennant. You can also get new cosmetics for this season, the Book of Cain pet and Lost Civilization Portrait Frame.

Meanwhile, if you’ve been playing Diablo 3 all along and reaching Conqueror in each Season Journey, you’ve already been earning extra stash tabs. You can earn another tab for each Conqueror tier, up to five:

  • Guardian of Sanctuary: Finish a level 70 Nephalem Rift on Torment XIII difficulty within five minutes.
  • Gem of My Life: Level three Legendary Gems to level 55.
  • All I Do is Win: Complete two Conquests this Season.
  • Life Goes On: Kill Maghda at level 70 in under 15 seconds on Torment XIII difficulty.
  • Money Ain’t a Thang: Slay Greed on Torment XIII difficulty. Treasure Goblins outside of Nephalem Rifts will sometimes open portals to Greed’s domain, The Vault.
  • Take U There: Reach Greater Rift Level 60 Solo. Greater Rift keystones can be obtained from any Nephalem Rift guardian.
  • Power Amplification: Use Kanai’s Cube to augment an Ancient Legendary item with a level 50+ gem.
  • Cubic Reconfiguration: Use Kanai’s Cube to reforge a Legendary item.

The blog also showed off the new Haedrig’s Gift rewards as well.

Undertaker Retires At WWE Survivor Series 2020, Possibly For Real

At the 2020 WWE PPV Survivor Series, The Undertaker retired from wrestling. The Dead Man has been a main event attraction for three decades–a crucial component to WWE’s ascendance as a global juggernaut. He is an irreplaceable attraction–a performer with a fantastical gimmick, who evolved it numerous times over 30 years to remain relevant.

In the second half of his career, he became much more than his gimmick. His in-ring work evolved into something exceptional–much more than “Undead Western Zombie” would have demanded. No longer simply a “big man,” he became an incredibly well-rounded performer and backstage leader. He mentored and guided both contemporaries and younger performers and became a symbol of longevity in a business where careers end quickly and men die young.

Now, we’re at the end of the road. And if this is the end–the last time we see The Undertaker in a WWE ring–then it is truly the “End of an Era” that WWE has been promoting for the past eight years.

However, The Undertaker has symbolically “retired” several times in the past decade. There was his Wrestlemania 28 “End of an Era” ramp shot with Shawn Michaels and Triple H. There was the end of the Streak at Wrestlemania 30, which shattered Taker’s facade of invulnerability. There was his second Wrestlemania loss at Wrestlemania 33, when he laid his hat, coat, and gloves in the ring. And each of these losses spurred new talk–about whether he should have retired earlier, about whether he was beginning to embarrass himself, about whether he could possibly injure himself or others. I was one of the writers who believed all three. His more recent performances in Saudi Arabia have solidified those sentiments. And the Undertaker himself has had concerns of overstaying his welcome. It’s these concerns that have prompted this final, seemingly more permanent retirement.

“I just don’t want to be that guy that goes out there, limps out to the ring, and the young guys are having to work around me only to get chokeslammed, or dropped on their head,” said Mark Calaway, the performer behind the character, in an interview with ESPN. “One, it’s not fair to them. Two, it’s not fair to the fans. I don’t want to be the guy that uses the equity I’ve built up over all those years to go out and make a payday or two. It doesn’t feel right to me.”

The November 22 retirement ceremony occurred at the very end of the Survivor Series PPV–the sort of placement that accorded it a degree of finality. The guest list also added to this mood. There were, of course, the usual faces: Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Big Show, and Kane, all of whom played key roles in the Dead Man’s career. But there were also the lesser-known, more minor players: Savio Vega, Phineas Godwinn aka Mideon, and the Godfather. These were his locker room friends and members of his BSK backstage crew. To a fan, it felt like a genuine gathering of friends and colleagues to wish the man well.

Then Vince McMahon, seldom seen on television, came to the ring. He introduced The Undertaker. The lights went out, the bell tolled, and off we went.

It’s cliched to say it at this point, but the Undertaker’s entrance never fails to impress. The signature bits–the thunder and lightning, the shooting flames–are constant, but it’s the little touches that make each one feel unique. This time around, it was two massive Tesla coils, which shot little lightning currents across the ramp. It was all reminiscent of Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein–the undead, reanimating for one final time.

The Undertaker came out on the ramp. All of his buddies were already shuffled off camera. And it became apparent that, despite inviting his real-life friends, he was staying in character for this final appearance. He may be eating hot wings on First We Feast, but there are still kayfabe-breaking lines that the Dead Man will not cross.

The next several minutes felt oddly predictable. The promo he gave was like many other ‘retirement’ promos that he’s given, like the one at the Raw 25th Anniversary celebration in Manhattan. It was steeped in the character’s abstract language, with direct callbacks to resting in peace, and making his opponents rest in peace. We’ve seen this before. And we’ve seen him return from far more final-feeling promos than this one.

Something new and heart rending: an emotional tribute to Paul Bearer by way of hologram, along with a 10-bell salute. Afterwards, the Undertaker walked back up the ramp and raised his fist. And then, it was over.

No doubt, the lack of audience meant this retirement lacked the gravitas it deserved. He’s essentially playing to a silent house–the cheers and chants we hear are piped in, and those that aren’t have been sweetened and loudened significantly. But still, the ceremony as a whole felt strangely impersonal.

Perhaps it’s a fool’s errand to put a cork in any of this, to continually tell fans that this time, it’s the end–this time, for real. The more WWE does it, the less affecting it becomes, and the more they have to “top” their previous attempts. It’s become increasingly clear that no one, least of all the Undertaker, seems truly willing to let go.

It will never be done–truly over–unless the man under the hat, Mark Calaway, comes to the ring instead of his character. But that will probably never happen. It’s just too good to put to rest–the Undertaker will endure a thousand deaths and many more retirements, but he’ll be back again–next year and the year after that, for more farewells. Perhaps like one of Taker’s early 90’s matches, that endurance–that rising from the grave each and every time–is what we’ll have to get accustomed to from now on. Or maybe not. But time will surely tell.

Viggo Mortensen Explains His Style As A Director

Lord of the Rings actor Viggo Mortensen has made his debut as a writer-director with Falling, a film that explores a family dealing with its patriarch’s battle with dementia. In an interview with Variety, Mortensen has talked about his approach to directing, and how it mirrors the way he acts.

While Mortensen has worked with some big-name directors–perhaps most famously Peter Jackson, but also Jane Campion, David Cronenberg, Ridley Scott, and many more–he says he never tried to copy anyone else’s way of directing.

“When it came to shooting Falling, I never thought about anybody else’s style,” Mortensen told Variety. “As an actor, I always do a load of research; I don’t want to leave anything unexamined. But then I put it to one side, so I can be open to what’s happening on the set. I’m the same as a director.”

That doesn’t mean he hasn’t taken anything from his previous work with some of the biggest names in the field, however. “I learned from those directors in terms of preparation–Campion, Cronenberg and the rest taught me that you can never prepare too much or too early for a shoot,” Mortensen said, after explaining that it had taken him some time and multiple tries to get Falling off the ground. “By waiting, I probably was able to avoid a lot of beginner’s mistakes.”

Lord of the Rings fans may have heard that Viggo Mortensen suggested many of the small details that brought his character Aragorn to life, and it sounds like Mortensen as a director has been receptive to similar input from his own cast and crew.

“On the first day, I told the cast and crew: ‘A good idea comes from anyone, anytime. We’ve got one shot to tell the story, so any idea helps; we’re all making this movie together,’” he explained. “I learned that from the best directors I worked with. I’ve been very lucky.”

Falling, which stars Lance Henrikson with Mortensen playing his son, has been well received on the festival circuit, and looks set for awards season in multiple categories. It is receiving a limited theatrical release in some European countries from November through to February. Other countries have not yet had a theatrical release announced.

New Lord Of The Rings Book Announced, Will Reveal Who Can Grow Beards

A new book feature the unpublished writings of Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien is coming in 2021. Harper Collins has announced “The Nature of Middle-earth,” and it will shed light on a number of particulars about Middle-earth and its inhabitants.

Specifically, the book will provide more details on the creatures who live in Numenor, Elvish immortality and reincarnation, and the powers of the Valar. But all of this pales in comparison to the most important fact that the book will confirm: who can grow beards.

Harper Collins said the book represents a “veritable treasure-trove offering readers a chance to peer over Professor Tolkien’s shoulder at the very moment of discovery: and on every page, Middle-earth is once again brought to extraordinary life.”

The Nature of Middle-earth is edited by Tolkien scholar Carl Hostetter and it’s due for release on June 24, 2021.

This will be just the latest book that dives deep into the extended lore of Middle-earth. Some of Tolkien’s previous writings were published in books such as Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-earth, and Beren and Luthien, among others. These were all edited by Tolkien’s son, Christopher, who passed away in January this year.

The Lord of the Rings remains very popular today. Amazon is currently filming a very expensive TV show based on the fantasy series in New Zealand, while there are multiple Lord of the Rings video games in the works, including an MMO and a title featuring Gollum.
