PS5’s “Sony” Branding Is Off-Center On The DualSense Controller

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is an impressive console–one that brings with it not only a new generation of games to play on your TV screen, but also a new way to experience them. Games such as Astro’s Playroom, Demon’s Souls, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales all use the DualSense controller to deliver more immersive haptic feedback.

One feature that the DualSense doesn’t have though, is perfectly aligned branding. While it’s not a game-breaking flaw, the Sony branding under the USB-C port on the controller isn’t perfectly centered. Far Cry 6 game design director Ted Timmins discovered that on his controller, the Sony logo was slightly out of place and had a minor angle to its orientation.

On other controllers the placement, is notably worse, like on mine for instance:

Literally unplayable.
Literally unplayable.

Will this graphic design blunder make a difference to your PS5 gaming experience? It’s highly unlikely, and the issue will probably be rectified when new controllers are produced and arrive in new color formats.

In his PS5 review, critic Mat Paget wrote that using the DualSense is a “pleasant experience” and that it “creates tactile experiences that enhance games in a surprisingly meaningful way.”

These final six episodes will follow up on the events of The Walking Dead Season 10, Episode 16, “A Certain Doom,” which was originally intended to be the season finale. In our review, we credited the episode for having “solid thrills and appropriately tense moments,” though we felt that it “faltered when it came to larger, memorable story beats,” which made some scenes feel “underwhelming.”

Black Friday 2020 Will Bring Fire Emblem: Three Houses Down To Just $27

Nintendo Switch games tend to have somewhat underwhelming discounts compared to PlayStation and Xbox games, but that’s not the case for Black Friday 2020. Some of the best Black Friday game deals we’re seeing this year are for the Switch, and that includes one of the best games of 2019: Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The turn-based tactics game will be on sale for just $27 in GameStop’s Black Friday sale, which kicks off next Wednesday, November 25, at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET. This is the cheapest we can recall seeing Three Houses since it launched, so if you’re looking for a new Switch game to pick up before the holidays, this is a great deal to take advantage of.

Three Houses is arguably the best entry we’ve seen in the Fire Emblem series since Awakening, earning a 9/10 in GameSpot’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses review. In Three Houses, you take the role of a professor (whom you can play as male or female) in charge of a group of students at a military academy called Garreg Mach Monastery. Once you’ve chosen which house you want to align with–there are three, of course–you’ll give combat lessons to your students, form relationships with them, and lead them into battle. In addition to the series’ traditional turn-based grid battle system, Three Houses lets you openly explore the monastery, and there are numerous activities to do in your free time, from cooking with your students to fishing and even relaxing in the sauna.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is one of the best Nintendo Switch deals to expect during Black Friday 2020, but there are plenty more Switch game deals worth checking out, plus a great Nintendo Switch bundle and accessory discounts. Notably, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening will see its best price ever as well.

Pokemon Sword And Shield Are Holding Another Limited-Time Shiny Pokemon Event

Pokemon Sword and Shield have kicked off another bonus Max Raid event. The limited-time event runs from now until November 22, and it gives players a chance to catch another Shiny Pokemon in the Switch Pokemon games.

Throughout the bonus event, Cherubi, Amoongus, Shiinotic, and Greedent will appear in Max Raid dens more frequently than usual across both Sword and Shield. Skowvet will also be a very common sight, and you may encounter a Shiny version of it in five-star Max Raids.

In addition to the increased Pokemon spawns, you’ll earn an assortment of different berries for successfully clearing the featured raids, including hard-to-find varieties like Micle, Rowap, and Custap Berries. The Max Raid event only runs until 3:59 PM PT / 6:59 PM ET / 11:59 PM UTC on November 22, however, so you’ll need to act fast if you’re interested in getting your hands on a Shiny Skwovet and the rare berries.

As usual, you’ll first need to refresh your Max Raid dens before the new event Pokemon can begin appearing in your game. You can do so either by connecting the Y-Comm online or by opening Mystery Gift in the menu screen and selecting Get the Wild Area News.

In other Pokemon news, Pokemon Go support was recently added to Pokemon Home, meaning players can now directly transfer monsters from the mobile game to the storage service. Everyone who takes advantage of the feature and brings a Pokemon over from Go will receive a Gigantamax-capable Melmetal as a free bonus in Pokemon Home. The Pokemon Company has also announced a Zarude distribution for the US and several European countries.

GI Joe Classified Line Gets Brand-New Flint And Lady Jaye Figures

No matter if there’s trouble over land or sea or air, G.I. Joe is there. Well, metaphorically they are there because G.I. Joe isn’t real. It’s a toy line and cartoon. During Fan First Friday, Hasbro announced a couple of new G.I. Joe Classified figures that look exactly like their cartoon counterparts.

Both Flint and Lady Jaye are getting the action figure treatment. While the toys were revealed during the November 20 stream, they’re still a ways off from coming out, landing in stores in April 2021. Costing $20, both figures will be available at HasbroPulse for preorder today and will be available in retail stores after the release date.

Yes, the Flint figure comes with his classic beret. It wouldn’t be him without it. It’s a highly-posable six-inch scale figure, which lines up with the other figures in the Classified line. Additionally, it will come with accessories like more guns for Flint to hold and aim. And again, look at that sweet beret.

Flint also comes with the Classified Series packaging featuring artwork from Rich Kelly.

If berets aren’t your thing and you’re more into baseball caps, you’ll probably want to pick up the six-inch scale Lady Jaye figure. Seemingly ripped from the ’80s cartoon, Jaye is also highly-posable and comes with numerous accessories. Some of these include a backpack and the very long gun with the pointy knife on the end.

The ’80s G.I. Joe cartoon continues to live on with the Classified line from Hasbro, so if you want to relive your childhood with updated action figures, head to Hasbro Pulse later today to preorder these figures.

Hulu’s Animaniacs: Season 1 Review

Note: this is a spoiler-free review of Animaniacs Season 1, which premieres on Hulu on Friday, November 20. Hulu made five of the initial 13 episodes available to critics ahead of release. Because the series doesn’t have much in the way of an ongoing plot or continuity, we figured it’s safe to render judgment on the new series based on those episodes.

[poilib element=”accentDivider”]

At this point, it’s easier to count the number of classic animated series that haven’t been revived and/or rebooted in the streaming era. The return of Animaniacs was basically inevitable, though the fact that the Warner brothers and sister are making their return on the Disney-owned Hulu rather than WarnerMedia’s own HBO Max is a testament to just how convoluted the streaming wars have become. But all you really need to know is this: Hulu’s revival series brings back original producer Steven Spielberg, songwriter Randy Rogel and most of the classic voice cast. If you loved Animaniacs back in the ’90s, the new series is basically a nostalgic time machine. If not, you’ll likely still have a good time.

Unlike the upcoming Tiny Toons Looniversity, Animaniacs is a direct continuation of the original series. Not that this necessarily means much when serialized storytelling was never the show’s thing, but it does ensure that little about the look or tone of Animaniacs has changed over the course of 22 years. The character designs and animation have become ever so slightly more exaggerated, but the voices and the show’s satirical sense of humor have remained the same.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/21/animaniacs-official-trailer-2020″]

If anything, the series premiere plays that fact to its advantage as it reintroduces the Warner siblings. What exactly they’ve been up to all this time is never really addressed, but the premiere does revolve heavily around the trio getting acquainted with the bizarre landscape of 2018 (the characters break the fourth wall to remind us that was when the scripts were being written). The original series was never shy about lampooning contemporary pop culture and political figures, and the revival is much the same. The series even opens with a pitch-perfect parody of the original Jurassic Park, complete with Sam Neill as Alan Grant. But from there, it’s pretty much business as usual – the Warners escape their tower and wreak havoc, rinse and repeat.

Despite the long production lead time, most of the show’s satire manages to hit the mark. The writers tend to devote most of their attention to our vapid, social media-obsessed culture, and that really hasn’t changed in the last decade or so. Some of the gags even feel eerily prescient. There’s an entire segment that seems like a coordinated attack on Quibi, despite that ill-fated streamer only having existed for about 17 minutes in 2020.

That said, there are some jokes (mostly of the political variety) that feel immediately dated upon arrival. Perhaps all the Russian election interference humor seemed topical back in 2018 when the writers were doom-scrolling Twitter for Mueller Report updates, but that material feels passé in post-election 2020. One particularly Russia-heavy segment probably would have been played out even in 1993, with the way it relies on so many stale Cold War stereotypes. The series is at its best when it finds the balance between topical humor and timeless shenanigans. Thankfully, most of the segments manage to toe that line.

While the show sounds as good as it ever did thanks to the return of voice actors Rob Paulsen, Jess Harnell, and Tress MacNeille, it looks quite a bit better. Again, the series has hardly reinvented its faux-retro WB animation style, and the switch to digital technology allows the animators to be bolder and more ambitious. There are plenty of catchy, visually enticing musical numbers. And occasionally the show will venture far afield, such as dropping a bombastic anime parody on viewers with no warning. The fact that all of this is achieved largely through the use of hand-drawn animation makes it all the more impressive. If you’re tired of sterile, CG-heavy cartoons, Animaniacs may well be a breath of fresh air.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=animaniacs-reboot-season-1-photos&captions=true”]

Fans will be happy to know Pinky and the Brain have also returned for the revival, and still voiced by Paulsen and Maurice LaMarche, respectively. These two have changed even less with time, though the first Pinky and the Brain segment does do a more satisfying job of exploring what exactly Brain has been up to these last two decades. These segments succeed in offering a comedic palate cleanser and a fun showcase for a maniacal genius and his “maybe not as dumb as he looks” BFF. Interestingly, there’s even a hint of an ongoing storyline here, which would be another welcome way of differentiating Pinky and the Brain from the standard Animaniacs adventures.

For better or worse, none of the original show’s other supporting characters seem to have made the jump, at least based on the sampling of episodes Hulu provided. There’s no Slappy Squirrel, Goodfeathers, or Rita and Runt here. The revamped intro teases a new cast of second-stringers who have been “focus-tested” for 2020, but there’s little sign of those newbies so far. Four of these five episodes follow a strict 1st Animaniacs segment/Pinky and the Brain segment/2nd Animaniacs segment formula, with only one introducing anything new.

But to be frank, that’s probably for the best. As great as the original Animaniacs was about experimenting and pushing against the confines of traditional slapstick WB cartoons, none of those extraneous segments ever connected as deeply as the Animaniacs/Pinky and the Brain tag-team combo. Doubling down on the big two ensures the revival sheds a lot of the tedious fluff of the original.

Animaniacs is, ultimately, a series that knows its audience and caters directly to that nostalgia for the hallowed days of Fox Kids and Kids’ WB. The original Animaniacs was a PG-13 series disguised as a PG series, and the revival seems even more directly targeted towards adults who want to see the Warners make a mockery of 21st Century life. That may limit the revival’s appeal somewhat, but if you fall within that target audience, it’s unlikely you’ll come away disappointed.

Broken PS5s and Xbox Series Xs: Should You Be Worried?

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are out now and, like you, we’ve been having a fantastic time playing games like Demon’s Souls, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Yakuza: Like A Dragon, Tetris Effect: Connected, and many more. However, it’s not all digital sunshine and rainbows with these news consoles.

Like a lot of newly released hardware, reports have emerged detailing issues with both Sony and Microsoft’s new consoles. Along with the many forum posts, tweets, and screams into the ether, we’ve had our own run-ins with crashes, weird bugs, and general instability.

So, on this episode of Generation Next, we’re taking the time to examine the state of the new consoles, discuss the major issues that have been reported, and recount our own anecdotal experiences. More importantly, we talk about whether you should be worried about any of the problems that are cropping up.

Generation Next is GameSpot’s weekly video show all about the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Each Friday, join PlayStation Pro Tamoor Hussain, Xbox Xpert Jordan Ramée, and Console Connoisseur Lucy James as they discuss the biggest stories about the new consoles.

GTA Online: New Heist Coming December Adds a Whole New Island

GTA Online will add the Cayo Perico Heist on December 15. Described as GTA Online’s biggest-ever heist, Cayo Perico adds an entire new island to the game, and can be played as a solo experience.

Announced with a teaser trailer (below), the Cayo Perico Heist tasks players with infiltrating “one of the most secure private islands in the entire world”. You’ll evade or fight security, “and escape with valuable evidence along with as much art, gold and drug money as you can carry.”

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/20/gta-online-the-cayo-perico-heist-teaser-trailer”]

Playable either alone or with friends, Cayo Perico will let you choose your approach to the heist, and the tools used, and will also feature new vehicles, weapons, social spaces, in-game DJs, and radio stations with over 100 new songs.

“Oh,” reads a press release, “and a very large, very versatile, and very heavily armed submarine HQ with plenty of other surprises.”

The update was teased yesterday, showing off the “El Rubio Dossier” and mentioning a John Doe – we’re still yet to learn much more about those, but Rockstar promises more information is on the way.
