Black Lightning Just Did One Thing Superhero Shows Rarely Do

This interview contains spoilers for the Black Lightning Season 2 premiere, titled “The Book of Consequences: Chapter One: Rise of the Green Light Babies.” A full review will be posted later tonight.

In countless comic book movies and TV shows, cops who are tight with a superhero are usually the last to figure out their identity (unless it’s purposefully revealed to them), despite the fact that they’re supposed to follow clues and solve mysteries for a living.

The Black Lightning Season 2 premiere dismantled that trope pretty quickly, with Jefferson’s long-suffering friend and neighbor, Bill Henderson, finally figuring out Jefferson Pierce’s secret and confronting him over his deception. It’s a heartbreaking moment, seeing the trust between the two men shatter after decades of friendship, and star Cress Williams tells IGN it’ll be a long road back for Jeff and Bill – if their bond can be repaired at all.

This Suicide Squad Comic Is Perfect for James Gunn’s Sequel

With news that fired Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 helmer James Gunn is writing, and possibly directing, the followup to Suicide Squad, we’re turning to the comics to see where Gunn might take Task Force X next. The report on Gunn’s big move from Marvel to DC said that Gunn isn’t doing a direct sequel as much as a revamping the property, and it’s unclear if the same cast will return.

With those details in mind, it’s hard to think of a better comic for Gunn to adapt than Suicide Squad: From the Ashes.

The Flash Season 5 Premiere Review

Warning: This review contains full spoilers for The Flash Season 5, episode 1, titled “Nora.” For more on The CW’s superhero shows, check out our spoiler-filled interview with Black Lightning star Cress Williams and the first look at Ruby Rose as Batwoman.

The Flash had its most uneven year to date last season, with a promising new pair of villains undone by an overall muddled overall storyline and some extremely frustrating character changes. If ever the show needed a fresh start, it’s right now. So it’s unfortunate that Season 5 breaks The Flash’s usual trend by picking up exactly where Season 4 left off. So far, Season 5 doesn’t look to be a huge departure for the series, and that’s cause for concern.

Constantine: City of Demons Movie Review

Note: this is a mostly spoiler-free review of the movie version of Constantine: City of Demons, which is available now in both Digital HD format and on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray.

NBC may have canceled Constantine after one brief season, but Matt Ryan’s version of the treacherous occultist has taken on a healthy second life elsewhere. Not only will Ryan be reprising the role as a series regular in the fourth season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, he’s also the star of DC’s latest direct-to-video animated movie, Constantine: City of Demons. Whether in live-action or animation, Ryan continues to do justice to this iconic anti-hero.

City of Demons saw partial release earlier this year on the CW Seed streaming platform (you can check out my review of those initial five episodes here). For whatever reason, The CW never finished the story in that format, opting instead to release the entire series as an animated movie. While City of Demons is a slightly tougher sell when fans are being asked to pay actual money, it’s still a worthwhile diversion for fans of the character. It’s certainly a much more faithful adaptation of the source material than that *other* Constantine movie. And if you’d rather not fork over the $20, the series will also be broadcast on The CW on October 15 as “Constantine: The Legend Continues.”

Birds of Prey May Be Why Suicide Squad 2 Lost Its Director

Suicide Squad has a new writer in James Gunn, who may also be its new director, and a rumor has now emerged that purportedly explains what happened to the previous writer/director.

Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant) was said to be DC and Warner Bros.’ top choice to helm the supervillains-turned-good-guys sequel as of last month. That’s clearly no longer the case, and Variety Film Reporter Justin Kroll claims to have the scoop on why the change was made.

“On the Gavin O’Connor front in relation to

,” Kroll tweeted earlier today, “hearing the story he had for the sequel ended up almost being identical to the BIRDS OF PREY story and when that film was given the go ahead to go before

HP OMEN Reactor Gaming Mouse Review

Be sure to visit IGN Tech for all the latest comprehensive hands-on reviews and best-of roundups. Note that if you click on one of these links to buy the product, IGN may get a share of the sale. For more, read our Terms of Use.

HP is expanding its OMEN line of gaming gear with a new high-end mouse it calls the Reactor (See it on Amazon). The name is a reference to the fact that it is the first mouse (to my knowledge) that uses switches that are optical-mechanical, theoretically allowing for faster clicking since you just have to break a light beam to register a click instead of waiting for a metal switch to rock back into place. It’s also got RGB lighting, adjustable ergonomics, and what HP says is the industry’s first steel USB cable. By my count that’s two industry firsts, in one mouse, making its lofty price tag of $79.99 not too surprising.

Confirmed: James Gunn Writing Suicide Squad 2 After Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Firing

Update: When reached for comment, Warner Bros. told GameSpot, “It is confirmed that James Gunn is writing the next installment of the Suicide Squad franchise.” That means it’s no longer a possibility, but Gunn has indeed signed on to write the next Suicide Squad movie. It remains to be seen whether he will also direct the project, though it was reported that is a distinct possibility.

Furthermore, Guardians star Dave Bautista has seemingly expressed interest in starring in Gunn’s new movie. Just what role he’d play (or if this was even his intention) remains to be seen, but Bautista has been a vocal supporter of Gunn since Disney fired him. The original story follows.

It looks like Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has found his rebound relationship after being dumped by Marvel Studios. It’s being reported that Gunn is in talks to jump to Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, where he would write and possibly direct the next Suicide Squad movie.

The news comes from io9, which is reporting that Warner Bros. has confirmed discussions with Gunn. The plan, at this point, is for him to write the sequel “with an eye to direct.” According to io9, the man behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and 2 will have “a completely new take on the property.”

This all comes after Gunn was fired by Marvel Studios from helming the third Guardians of the Galaxy film, after a series of old tweets resurfaced. Thus far, Disney, which owns Marvel Studios, has not announced a replacement director for Gunn or whether it will use the script he’d already written for the movie. However, star Dave Bautista (Drax) has publicly said if the script isn’t used, he would ask to be released from his contract.

The tweets in question were from nearly a decade ago, in which Gunn made jokes about rape and pedophilia. Though Gunn had previously apologized for the messages and did so when they resurfaced, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement, “The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”

Since then, the entire Guardians cast has signed a public letter supporting their director, while the third installment in the franchise has been put on hold indefinitely, according to Bautista. The film was reportedly scheduled to start production in early 2019, with a projected release in 2020.

Gunn joining the project will likely mean an even longer wait for Suicide Squad 2, though there was very little indication of when fans would see the movie anyway. It was reported over a year ago that The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor would helm the film, but there’s been no real news since then.

In the meantime, a new Joker film, starring Joaquin Phoenix, has gone into production, while Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is set to appear in a Birds of Prey movie. Now, with Gunn potentially taking on Suicide Squad 2, DC’s villains could be in good shape for the coming years.
