Game Of Thrones: Daenerys Targaryen’s Descent Into Madness

Warning: Game of Thrones spoilers within!

Season 8 of Game of Thrones might have been a little thin on character development, and that’s why the latest big twist for Daenerys Targaryen took some viewers by surprise. In Episode 5, “The Bells,” Daenerys finally decided to embrace making the people of Westeros fear her, torching King’s Landing with her last dragon, Drogon, and murdering thousands of innocent people in the process. But the idea that Dany might go all Mad Queen on Westeros isn’t new–it’s something she’s been dealing with her whole life.

Watch the video above as we break down all the ways Game of Thrones has foreshadowed how Dany eventually followed in the footsteps of her father, the Mad King Aerys, and fulfilled his desire to “burn them all.” We’ve gone back through the entire series to date, and we’ve learned one thing: the foreshadowing of the possibility of Daenerys’s eventual fall is not exactly subtle. There’s a whole lot of it.

There’s only one more episode of Game of Thrones left, but we’ve got plenty more coverage to help hold you over while awaiting the finale. Check out our video breakdown of Episode 5, complete with one last stab at theories of how things will finally shake out. You can also read our review of Episode 5, and get a load of all the callbacks and Easter eggs from “The Bells” that you might have missed. We’ve also opined on how Game of Thrones didn’t turn out to be the show we thought it was, and you’re definitely going to want to learn about how the show gave a big hint about what could be Daenerys’s final fate.

Guacamelee is an excellent Metroidvania-style action-platformer that tells the story of agave farmer Juan Aguacate, who is in love with the mayor’s daughter. At the beginning of the game, Juan is killed by evil skeleton Carlos Calaca; however, he’s later given a magical luchador mask that allows him to return to the world of the living and fight demonic skeletons in his quest to rescue his true love and save his town.

The game earned an impressive 9/10 in GameSpot’s Guacamelee review for its charming characters and dialogue, great combat, unique visuals, and masterful balance of drama and comedy. “Even if 2D platformers aren’t your thing, Guacamelee’s bound to have something for everyone, whether it’s the humor in the writing and world design, the great combat, or even the ability to transform into a chicken,” wrote GameSpot’s Peter Brown. “It’s an excellent ride while it lasts, and with the extra content on board, the PC version is the best way to travel through the troubled town of Pueblucho in style.”

If you enjoy Guacamelee, consider picking up its equally-superb sequel, Guacamelee 2, which is 60% off at Humble as part of its Spring Sale. The game is only $8 for the next week or so.

PS4 Shooter Removes Mandatory VR Requirement Through Update

PS4 first-person shooter The Persistence will receive a free update that removes the necessity to play the game in VR. Dubbed “the Complete Edition,” The Persistence will make the jump from the PlayStation VR to “flat screen TVs.”

Firesprite’s game director Stuart Tilley took to the PlayStation Blog to make the announcement. “The Complete Edition is going to be the next free update for everyone that already owns the game,” Tilley wrote. “And for the first time ever, this update will make The Persistence playable on what we now fondly call ‘flat screen TVs.'” Tilley also discussed a few additional enhancements launching alongside The Persistence: Complete Edition.

In the graphics department, The Persistence: Complete Edition will “deliver 4K at 60 frames per second on the PS4 Pro, and 1080p at 60 frames per second on PS4.” Lighting and particle effects will also be improved and will include “entirely new technical visual effects such as Motion Blur and Chromatic Aberration.”

Since The Persistence: Complete Edition can be played without the PSVR, camera animations had to get retooled. According to Tilley, the game’s camera will now feature “subtle head movement when moving, and transitions between different poses–such as crouching and standing–are now animated to add a greater sense of situational awareness.”

Going from controlling in PSVR to controlling on a PS4 controller can be an awkward transition for some, but Tilley and the Firesprite team is looking to address any of these concerns in this free update. “There is also a brand-new way to interact with objects and collect pick-ups.” Some weapons, like the Gravity Hook, will have “new ways to fire them when you are playing on your TV.”

Lastly, along with graphical and camera adjustments, the game’s UI will get “updated to make them super intuitive for flat screen displays.” There’s no word on when The Persistence: Complete Edition will launch, but Tilley did confirm that the “free update is getting close to being complete.” The Persistence is out now on PS4.

Ghost In The Shell Director Creating New Anime Series, Coming 2020

Ichigo Animation, a newly-established animation studio under Japanese real estate and clean energy production company Ichigo, has confirmed that it’s teaming up with legendary filmmaker Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, The Sky Crawlers) to release a new anime series.

Ichigo Animation, founded on April 4 of this year as a subsidiary of Ichigo, will produce Oshii’s new series, which is slated to broadcast and stream in spring or early summer of 2020 in Japan, according to Anime News Network. Oshii–who has developed the concept over the past decade–will be credited for the original story and scripting, and will serve as the project’s chief director.

Oshii is also serving director on an animated film adaptation of Baku Yumemakura’s sci-fi series Chimera. However, Chimera currently has no release date, and it’s unclear if Ichigo Animation has any involvement with the project.

Oshii is most known for the Ghost in the Shell series, most notably directing 1995’s Ghost in the Shell, 2004’s Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (which he also wrote the screenplay for), and 2008’s remake Ghost in the Shell 2.0. He also provided the story concept for 2004’s Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG TV series.

In addition to animation, Oshii has contributed to live-action adaptions such as directing and writing Garm Wars: The Last Druid and The Next Generation: Patlabor. He was also a special consultant on 2008’s Wii combat flight simulator The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces.

Marvel Has More Fantastic Four On The Way With A New Special Series

The Fantastic Four are a bit of a hot button issue over in the MCU these days, thanks largely to the mysterious Phase 4 and the recent Disney buyout of 20th Century Fox placing the team’s film rights back in the potential MCU lineup. But the comics are, thankfully, a different story. After their triumphant return from their extended post-Secret Wars absence, the F4 have been holding down their own ongoing series and reestablishing themselves as Marvel’s first family.

And there’s more on the way. Announced earlier today, Marvel will be publishing a brand-new “special series” centered around the Fantastic Four created by Gerry Dugan and Greg Smallwood called Fantastic Four: Yancy Street. Set within the main continuity of the Marvel Universe and following events laid out in their current ongoing book, Yancy Street will be a chance for the team to explore their own history and relationships with one another as they settle back into their old neighborhood.

In the spirit of last year’s Web Of Venom special series, Yancy Street will be a series of quarterly specials that afford the team the time and space to deal with some of their classic villains and settings in the spirit of their originators, Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. The first issue will feature The Thing pitted against vintage villains, The Terrible Trio.

Created back in 1961, the Fantastic Four were Marvel’s first official superhero team, pre-dating both the X-Men and the Avengers. A team of scientists and friends exposed to mysterious extra-dimensional radiation that gave them fantastic (get it?) powers, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Human Torch, and The Thing remain some of Marvel’s most beloved and well-recognized superheroes to this day. Their current ongoing series was launched in 2018.

Fantastic Four: Yancy Street #1 hits shelves on August 21.

Devil May Cry 5 Director Would Like DmC 2, But Only From Ninja Theory

While it was controversial with series fans from the moment it was announced, DmC: Devil May Cry was largely well-received by critics. Positive review scores aren’t the only beacon of good fortune for the divisive entry in the hack ‘n’ slash franchise, however, as Hideaki Itsuno, the director of multiple Devil May Cry titles, would love a sequel.

According to a report from USGamer, Itsuno–who’s worked also worked on multiple other Capcom games including Power Stone, Capcom Vs. SNK 2, and Dragon’s Dogma–would have no problem with a DmC 2. But there’s a catch: for Itsuno, British developer Ninja Theory has to be on the project again. Otherwise, as Capcom producer Matt Walker added, “It wouldn’t be DmC without Ninja Theory.”

“On the dev side we certainly wanted to and thought we would work with Ninja Theory again to create a sequel to DmC, but that unfortunately didn’t get off the ground,” said Itsuno, who expressed interest in a sequel.

Walker agreed with the sentiment, saying, “We’d still love to see a sequel, but we think it absolutely has to be made by Ninja Theory–so much of the amazing style and substance in that game was only possible because they have such a knack for what’s cool.”

Apart from DmC, Ninja Theory is most known for developing action games such as Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Heavenly Sword, and the critically-acclaimed Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (which recently made the jump to Nintendo Switch). Ninja Theory was acquired by Microsoft and folded into the company’s Xbox Game Studios in 2018, meaning if a DmC sequel were to happen, it’d require Microsoft’s blessing to be multiplatform or end up an Xbox and PC exclusive.

In our DmC: Definitive Edition review, we said that the “numerous tweaks and upgrades of DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition have made a game that isn’t just a better version of DmC, but a bonafide hack ‘n’ slash classic.”

While a DmC 2 may not be in the works any time soon, fans of the action franchise recently got Devil May Cry 5 to tide them over, which we awarded a 9/10.
