The Esports Highlights of the Week for April 23

Great stuff from local esports this week! The IEM Sydney Qualifiers have wrapped, Australia has new Splatoon champions, Rocket League gave us some brilliant play and the ESL Women’s Sydney Open found its four competitors!

How To Watch Batman Ninja This Week

Batman Ninja is one of the craziest takes on Batman we’ve ever seen. The Japanese movie pits Batman against the Joker and a whole host of other allies and enemies in feudal Japan thanks to a time machine built by Gorilla Grodd. It’s completely insane, and unlike any other take on Batman.

And good news! Batman Ninja’s release date has arrived. You can watch the movie beginning this week when it releases on digital platforms April 24. Right now you can pre-order the digital version of Batman Ninja on Amazon, iTunes, or even PlayStation, where PS Plus members can get a 10% discount.

Batman Ninja will be available on many digital platforms worldwide, including the US and UK, starting April 24. But what about a physical release? Don’t you want to hold a Batman Ninja Blu-ray disc lovingly in your hands the way a young Bruce Wayne clutched his dying parents’ hands? More good news: Batman Ninja gets a physical release on Blu-ray and DVD May 8 in the US and May 14 in the UK. You can pre-order it on Amazon if you want. Other regions’ physical versions will also come out between May 9 and May 30, according to the movie’s IMDB page.

And lastly, if you happen to find yourself in Japan this summer, you can catch Batman Ninja in theaters there starting June 15. (Why this Japanese Batman film is hitting Japan after every other region is anyone’s guess.)

Worlds Adrift May Be Perfect For Disappointed Sea Of Thieves Fans

A lack of content in Sea of Thieves has turned many off, but we take a look at a new PC game on Steam that might be a viable alternative.

Sea of Thieves‘ release has come and gone, with many disappointed by the game’s lack of things to do. Rare has pledged long-term support that will see new content added, but in the meantime, those looking for some ship-based fun may find what they’re looking for in Worlds Adrift.

The so-called “community-crafted” MMO has been available in very limited early access through Steam for some time, but this only includes the game’s island creator, which allows players to create worlds that may be included in the final game. Now, on May 17, the early access game will expand to something closer to what developer Bossa Studios has in mind for the full product.

As you can see in the video above, we got to try the game out recently, and it might just scratch the itch of those who are left wanting more from Sea of Thieves. Worlds Adrift is all about forming a crew, building a flying ship, and exploring the world. Physics are a key element, as you’re not simply throwing together a custom look for your ship–you’ll need to build something that will actually work. You can see what ship-to-ship combat is like in the video and get a glimpse at some intense PvP action as we use a grappling hook to hang from our ship before launching over onto an enemy vessel.

You’ll spend the early hours in Worlds Adrift assembling a ship before venturing out into the world to track down better tech, which in turn lets you create better ships. Long-term, there will also be player alliances and trading, though we don’t know when those elements are coming.

Worlds Adrift is already available for pre-order, with several different tiers available that get you additional cosmetics and other exclusive content. They range in price starting at $35, which gets you a copy of the game and access to the test server.

Avengers: Infinity War Bosses Promise Hawkeye Answers Are Coming–Eventually

The mystery surrounding Hawkeye’s (Jeremy Renner) role in Avengers: Infinity War has practically become a meme at this point–even to Robert Downey Jr. As one of the founding members of the Avengers, you’d think he would be a lock to help in the fight against Thanos (Josh Brolin).

However, he’s not in any of the trailers, hasn’t ended up on a single poster, and for all intents and purposes is absent from the film’s promotional tour. Renner isn’t even scheduled to attend the Infinity War premiere. The absence has struck a chord with fans, many of whom have taken to championing Hawkeye on social media.

According to Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, speaking with io9, the situation is “one of the best things that ever happened to Hawkeye.” After all, Hawkeye went from essentially being the butt of jokes about these movies–in a world of superpowers, he has a bow and arrow–to being an in-demand character. “I love that people go from ‘Oh, Hawkeye is just lucky to be there’ to ‘Oh where is he? He’s not there? What’s going to happen? We need Hawkeye. We want more Hawkeye.’ I love it,” he tells io9. “It’s the best.”

And it’s going to pay off for the character in the end. “We [at Marvel] love Hawkeye,” Feige says. “There are big, big story things coming up for Hawkeye and Jeremy Renner is as strong an actor as anyone in the MCU and awesome as this character.”

As co-director Joe Russo explains, Hawkeye’s story in the next two Avengers movies is a function of how they were written and filmed together. “As we were working on both films, we were thinking about story real estate,” he says. “We had the luxury of cracking both scripts at the same time and we wanted to give each character, especially the original Avengers, their moments. It led us to certain choices, especially considering the events of Civil War where [Hawkeye’s] included in this group of insurgents and has to deal with the ramifications of siding against the U.S. government. So that led us to a very specific story with him that, as I’ve said before is a long play, not a short play. Audiences just need to be patient.”

Patience is a virtue for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, it seems. Thankfully, it shouldn’t be too long before fans get some kind of idea about what happened with Hawkeye–even if it happens in a post-credits scene. Besides, it’s not like he’s alone in missing out on the fun. Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) is nowhere to be seen either. Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters on April 27.

After Abandoning Its Bread And Butter, Here’s What Nex Machina Dev Is Making Next

Back in November, Resogun and Nex Machina developer Housemarque announced that it had decided to move away from its core genre of arcade-inspired games. For a developer that is more or less synonymous with twin-stick arcade-y shooters, this seemed like a bold move. Now, we know a little bit about what Housemarque has planned for its next title.

Called Stormdivers, this is the first game made after the studio shifted its focus to multiplayer-centric, “live” games. Beyond saying that the game will, indeed, focus on multiplayer gameplay, Housemarque didn’t give many details. However, you can see the first teaser trailer in the embed above.

If the trailer is any indication of the actual in-game look of Stormdivers, then the title will mark a significant break from the past. Previous Housemarque games have generally been heavily stylized and cartoony; the teaser, meanwhile, shows a world both atmospheric and realistic.

“Our newest title will still remain in a slight shroud of mystery, but we can say that it will be a high-flying and heavy-hitting, multiplayer-centric experience,” Housemarque stated in a press release. “It will be the first title that we treat as an ongoing service; this also means that there are ways to get to play it earlier and we’d love to develop it further with a feedback loop in mind.”

It’s tough playing video games on PC sometimes. With so many new titles coming to Valve’s Steam platform every week (along with other storefronts like Humble and GOG), it can be overwhelming to look at everything and decide what might be good to play. It can be easy to resign yourself to playing another round of PUBG or Overwatch. But you don’t have to be that person! You can be an all-knowing connoisseur of only the freshest new video games because you’ve got us to rely on for awesome PC game recommendations.

Dead In Vinland

While Dead in Vinland may take a lot of influence from the wildly successful Darkest Dungeon, there’s a lot more to it. Dead in Vinland is a Viking themed RPG, which blends elements from Dungeons & Dragons, turn-based survival management games, and yes, Darkest Dungeon-influenced turn-based combat. You’ll start from scratch on a hostile island and attempt to balance exploration with maintaining basic necessities while keeping the well-being and sanity of your party members in the front of your mind at all times while you make tough decisions and sacrifices. It’s the kind of game that can really take a hold of you, until you realise you should have gone to be hours ago.

Tower of Time

Tower of Time comes from the lineage of classic computer RPGs like Baldur’s Gate or Iceland Dale, with a focus on its real-time battle system with tactical pauses. As you scale the titular tower you’ll recruits characters of different classes, equip them with a multitude of skills and gear, and treat every hostile encounter like a puzzle. There’s a load of lore to be discovered if you want it, but otherwise, you can expect there to be dozens of hours of questing and combat here.

Oh, Deer!

If you’re a fan of old-school Sega racing games like Outrun or Super Hang-On, then Oh, Deer! is something you definitely need to check out. With period-perfect 2D art and music composed by one of the minds behind the Streets of Rage 3 soundtrack, Oh, Deer! has you drifting your 80s stationwagon on your way to your grandma’s house as fast as you can. Along the way, you can either choose to shoot for a high score by running over as many deer as possible, or avoiding as many as possible. The driving feels great, and this early access beta version is great for some cheap and satisfying arcade thrills.

Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle

If the last Friday The 13th game didn’t do it for you, you might find some surprising satisfaction in this cute take on the bloody adventures of Jason Vorhees in Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle. Taking the form of a slide puzzle, you’ll move Jason through a series of simple-looking but challenging puzzles in order to kill all the teenagers. Despite its look, Jason’s brutal takedowns remain, and are still gory enough to turn your stomach. Best of all, it’s free to play, with more difficult levels being available for purchase if you feel like you want more.
